Trigger warnings: stalking, forced marriage, manipulation of circumstances, threatening readers family
You were born a princess. Daughter of two loving parents who couldn't have been more blessed to have a beautiful daughter like you. When you were born, the whole kingdom celebrated. The birth of an heir, especially one that is so beautiful and easy to love made everyone's heart fill with affection.
The tragedy happens when you turn 6. On your sixth birthday, the king and queen call all the fairies in the land to read your fate. One by one they start by blessing you- it isn't until the last fairy that everything changes.
Her name is Maleficent, and she is the fairy of destiny. While every other fairy ruled over something simple like wealth, beauty and intellect, Maleficent represented much harsher. The destiny that she represents is one that can never be changed. It can't be fixed or replaced. It can only be accepted.
So, when she starts reading into your destiny, your parents hold their breath- worried that they might not like what they hear. After all, you are the entire kingdom's beloved; nothing bad should happen to you.
"She will be loved by all-" Maleficent starts. Her voice is smooth and direct. There's no hint of doubt in her words. But her tone changes when she continues, "But this is not a blessing. This is a curse. Her life is doomed by too much love. A man, from a different kingdom will find her and keep her for himself. . . She will be loved too much." With that she ends her message.
Everyone gasps. There's no time to stop or react. Your parents have already told the guards to seize her. They think that she's spinning some tales. Something sinister to mess with them. There's no way that they can believe such a doomed outcome for you. She escapes. Vanishes into the fog of her own magic.
Why were your parents so angry? You don't understand. You're six. There's not much about this message that reaches you. You just want to go and play. Perhaps have some sweets and then sleep. But your parents won't let you. They seem angry at the moment. And the guests- those who attended the celebration aren't very far from horrified.
The celebration ends abruptly. And . . . That is pretty much how your birthday went. Not that you're much worried about that. You sit alone in your room-playing with some dolls that you got as a gift.
On the other hand, your father consoles your mother in an attempt to get her to calm down. "We don't know why she said that. She was probably not even telling the truth." He hugs her tightly. "Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to our daughter."
You're grown up now. You're seventeen. Still loved by everyone and deeply cherished. There's no one that doesn't like being around you. Everyone loves your presence. You are like a ball of energy. So youthful and innocent. That's also the age when your destiny starts becoming true.
You suddenly receive a letter. It's beautifully wrapped in hand crafted paper. A very fine design. You open it and smell the aroma it is doused in. Something sweet and sharp. You open and start to read. It just says one thing:
Don't be afraid when you start seeing me.
It's a weird letter. But then again, you do get lots of letters from people and a lot of them are strange. Some confess their undying love for you while some write their dreams of becoming like you. You don't take the letter seriously until another one arrives.
I saw you today. You were in the garden. So stunning. I imagine seeing you so carefree and happy in my garden. With me. Where you'll be soon.
This time you tell your parents. Tell them that you got a weird letter. One that you don't like the contents of. "It's creepy." You say.
They immediately jump into action. For them, this is a big deal. Ever since your sixth birthday, when that fairy read your destiny, they've been extremely overprotective. For them, this is a threat to your safety. You try to calm them down and tell them that it's just a letter. You just don't like what's in it. But they don't listen. They observe where all the letters are being delivered from and who is posting them from where. Amidst this, you get a new one the next day.
I'm so touched, darling, that you were so moved by my letter that you shared its content with your parents. But there's not much that they can do to stop me. I meant it when I said that I'll have you in my home, in my garden. And you will be happy. After all, I love you so much. You will learn to love me.
This time, there was a gift with the letter. A small golden ring with the carvings of hearts on it. The ring was solid gold. You could tell, growing up with good ornaments all the time. And the intricate details with which it was carved was no easy job. Whoever sent this to you defined spent a fortune on it.
Now you're panicking. This is exactly what Maleficent had said all those years ago. Your destiny is catching up with you. And you're not the only one panicking. Your parents are already lost in their fantasies of killing whoever wants to take their beloved daughter away from them. They order the guards to find Maleficent. It's been ten years since she vanished. Surely she must've let her guard down by now. How hard can it be to find a damn fairy!?
The letters don't stop arriving. It's just that you've stopped reading them. Along with them are many expensive gifts. From jewellery to previous stones to poetry carved by hands on thin sheets of marbles. None of these are cheap. This person is not one of your casual admirers. This is some crazy lunatic who has decided to claim you.
You haven't left your room in weeks. Worried that whoever this is, will see you again. You're used to being followed, used to being observed. But this feels like stalking.
No one besides your parents and some guards know about this. You don't know how people will react to knowing about this. Besides, you don't want to cause any sort of commotion.
One night, your parents approach you. They tell you their plan. "We'll send you away. To some place secluded. You'll be watched over by fairies. They'll keep you safe." Your father says.
You open your mouth to protest but your mother cuts you off. "It's safer that way. When you're in the palace, everyone knows about your every move. People here know you. They can see you. You're a princess, it'd be hard to keep you hidden within your own kingdom's palace." She sighs. Her eyes are red and glossy. It seems like she's discussed this before with your father. Yet she's having a hard time sending you away.
"We'll tell everyone that you went away for studies. That you're studying in some foreign land. We will pretend like everything is fine and you will stay hidden in a place where no one knows you." Your father chimes in. "It's a small cottage near the edge of the kingdom. There will always be some guards near the place. They'll be informed. Soz if you ever feel unsafe run to them. They have been trained to protect you."
You can only nod. Your own eyes are shining with unshed years. Oh God! How did it come to this. Just weeks ago you were happy. So oblivious to this stupid curse of yours. Why did it have to separate you from your parents like this? "How long will I be gone?" You ask.
"For as long as we can keep you safe, over there." That's the last thing that your parents ever told you. You didn't even get to say a proper goodbye to them. And worst of all, you don't even know what they mean. How long will you really stay there? There's no guarantee of when you'll be back.
You move into the cottage easily. A carriage takes you to the center of the forest and drops you off. From there, the three fairies guide you themselves. It's very far into the corner; the cottage. It's close to a cliff and literally on the edge of the kingdom. There's no way that no one will find you here.
You spend the next three months in peace. You get along well with the three fairies. They don't talk much but they are a good company and they enjoy spending their day with you. One day, you go out for a walk in the forest.
You're walking around and looking at the birds and squirrels around you when suddenly a loud noise pulls you out of your trance. You turn around to see a man standing in front of you.
"Apologies. If I startled you." He says. His voice is smooth. You notice the bow and arrow that he's holding. Oh, so that's what the noise was. He was shooting arrows nearby.
You look at him carefully. He's young. Maybe a little bit older than you. His clothes are of fine quality. Kind of like what yours used to be in the palace. Now, you wear simple and modest clothing to hide your identity as the princess.
"My name is, Philip." He immediately says. His hand is outstreched in front of you. You take it. "Nice to meet you, Philip." You say, careful not to give your name.
His face is very handsome, you think. He has brown hair that shines like honey in the Sun and his eyes hold such depth. They're a beautiful rich colour. You're mesmerized by his appearance.
"What is a beautiful woman like you doing here? In a forest that is so far away from the kingdom?" He asks shyly. You giggle a bit. It's sweet and innocent. "I'm visiting my aunts."
He raises his eyebrows. "Oh, is that so? I didn't know that people lived here- nearby. Where is your aunt's cottage?"
"Oh, it's just east of the cliff. Close to the edge of the cliff." You say.
"As you can see, I am on a hunt. I come to this forest often for hunting." He says. "I've never seen you here before."
You slightly panic. Not sure of what to say; you just blurt out, "That's because they just moved her. In the cottage. They used to live in the heart of the Kingdom before. Now they live here." You hope he doesn't catch on to your obvious lie.
"I hope you like this place. It's a beautiful piece of nature. Quite like you." He smirks as you blush.
Feeling embarrassed and shy, you quickly gather your thoughts to leave. "I'm running late and they're waiting for me. Please take care. Bye." Without waiting for a response, you leave.
He watches you go. His gaze focused on you until you're completely out of sight. He takes in a deep breath. You look so much more beautiful in person- "Your majesty." He is pulled out of his thoughts when his second in command calls out to him.
"Joseph. Follow her to her cottage and see where exactly she lives. I have to get her soon." Joseph nods and starts moving in the direction you left in.
He had been hiding behind the trees like a shadow during the entire conversation that happened between you and Philip. Or 'His Majesty' as Joseph had called him.
Philip, is your secret admirer. The one who had been sending you those letters and gifts all this time. He knew that you'd be here. He merely wanted to see you in person. That's why he came here. He hadn't seen you in so long. The last time he could properly see you was on your sixth birthday. When your 'gift' was announced. After that, he's only caught glimpses of you. No doubt it's because of your parents who never let you out of the palace due to their overprotectiveness. No wonder he had to settle for stealing glances at you whenever he could.
Tonight, he will go back to his kingdom. From there- he'll move his plan forward. His plan to steal you for himself.
-----------------========-----------------
You're back at the cottage. None of your fairy aunts noticed you were gone and they don't question what you had been doing today. Thank God they didn't ask any questions. You don't know how you'd explain you ran into someone in this forest where no one besides you and them is supposed to be.
You try to justify running into someone else by thinking that he must have been from some other kingdom. This forest lies between two kingdoms anyways. You really hope that he wasn't from your kingdom because that would mean that he may have recognised you. The beloved princess that everyone seems to know of.
You like to believe that he didn't because he didn't say anything about your identity as a princess. You sigh and hang your head. You really hope that you're safe in this forest.
You hope that no one will steal you away like your destiny says you will be.
Months go by and nothing happens. You're living a peaceful and comfortable life. It's much less luxurious than being a princess but it's good enough that you feel safe. And for the first time in years, you can go out for as long as you want. Back in the palace, your parents kept you locked up. In their mind it was to keep you safe but you rarely felt so. You just felt so stuck all the time. Locked away in a life of luxury that has no meaning because you can never leave. Freedom is what you crave and freedom is what you have.
Until another letter arrived. It was on the front door of the cottage. Kept neatly. As if someone left it there and vanished.
Dear, (Y/N). You are old enough to be wed now. I have been waiting for you for a long time. I wonder if you think of me as much as I think of you. Soon, you will become my bride and we shall be wed as husband and wife. For that, I will always be grateful. Grateful that you will belong to me and no one else.
Just like always, here's a gift for you. Make sure you wear it for our wedding.
Your blood runs cold. What is this? He . . . Found you? And this is the first time that he's ever signed the letters with him calling himself as your husband.
Your eyes drop on the package that was sent with the letter. It's a huge brown box covered with tape. You rip through the box and gasp. It's a gown. A long beautiful blue gown. It's a wedding dress that's for sure. The fabric is smooth and silky like the finest quality that you only had the luxury of wearing back in the palace. You grip the dress in your arms and start filling it.
A scream of anger comes out of you when the fabric protests against your attempts at tearing it. Finally it relents and starts to fall apart. You don't stop until you leave the dress in shreds. There are tears running down your eyes by the time you're done.
"(Y/N)! What happened?" You look up to see one of your fairy aunt's looking at you. You sob harder.
Her eyes fall on the letter in your hands. She carefully takes it from you and starts to read it.
You don't notice when your other fairy aunts have also appeared. Without any words they start packing everything up.
"We can't live here anymore." They say.
"We will go back to the palace tonight."
You quickly nod. Eager to get out of this place.
--------------============------------
The palace is in chaos. While you're on your way back, your parents are running around frantically when they get the news. Not of you because you haven't been able to speak to them yet.
No, no. Something much stranger has happened. Maleficent has been found.
"BRING HER TO ME!" Your father yells at guards who caught her. She was somewhere far away in a foreign land. In a completely different continent. No wonder it took so long to find her.
She is brought to your father's personal interrogation chamber. Your mother is there too. It's a rare sight. She rarely shows up at such places where violence occurs. But for you, she was willing to swallow her urge to puke everywhere at the sight of torcher devices and dried blood. She can only imagine what has happened in this room.
And Maleficent can't even imagine what will happen to her- now that she's caught. When she's brought in, she immediately falls to her knees. "Please! Your majesty! I beg you for your forgiveness. I have committed no crime." She sobs loudly.
Her whole body is shaking. Her body is weak and her cheeks have sunk in. Looks like she hasn't eaten in days. She looks starved. Your mother pities her. Your father despises her.
Maleficent grabs your father's legs to beg once again but he kicks her away. "Why did you say that was my daughter's destiny! What were your intentions."
She looks up. "I swear I was just reading what I saw. It's my duty to give all monarchs a reading of their destiny. I read yours too! Have mercy." Her voice is loud now. Filled with desperation.
"My future wasn't so dark. What changed for my daughter? Why is hers so much worse?" Your father says.
Maleficent swallows. "She is destined to-"
Your mother cuts her off, "Please stop with destiny. I can't hear that anymore. Why did you run away? At least tell us that." Her voice is softer. More gentle than your father's.
"I feared for my safety. You were trying to capture me." Maleficent protests.
"And look how that ended. We still capture you." This time it was your father who spoke.
Maleficent grabs your mother's legs this time. "I can fix this. Please give me one chance and I can tell you what you can do to change this fate."
Your mother is sceptical. "Why should we trust you?"
"You have no other choice. There's no other fairy that can predict destinies. I am your only option." Your parents look at each other and nod.
"On her eighteenth birthday, (Y/N) can prick her finger on a magical spindle. This is no ordinary spindle. It is kept in my family's ancestral home deep within the fairy realm. It's one of a kind. Anyone who touches it can have a single wish granted. But there's a catch, they only get one wish and their wish can't ever be undone. Meaning, if they don't like the consequence of the wish- they still have to live with it." She takes a deep breath and adds, "The spindle can't be used twice by the same person again. Therefore its wish is indeed permanent."
"You will bring the spindle to us."
-----------==============-------------
You reach the palace at night time. When your parents are asleep. They are instantly woken up by the news of your arrival and waste no time in coming to you.
You're pacing the distance of your room when suddenly- the door opens. You see your parents standing with a loud look of worry on their face. You run into their arms and let all your tears down. There's no stopping you from crying.
After what feels like forever, you finally pull away and tell them everything that happened that day. Your father laughs at the part where you tore up the dress. Your mother comforts you when you say that you left immediately. Scared, that the cottage is no longer a safe space for you.
And then, they tell you what happened at the palace. How Maleficent was discovered again.
"We can save you now. We can change your fate." Your mother says. Her hand is on your cheek.
"Just prick your finger on the spindle and make a wish to change your destiny. Everything will be alright." Your father adds.
You don't remember anything that happened after that. All that you can think of is whether or not this will actually work.
----------------==========---------------
Months have passed and you haven't received any letters or gifts. You feel at peace now. You feel calm.
You turn eighteen tonight. At midnight it's your birthday. At midnight, you will prick your finger on the spindle and make a wish.
Maleficent has been kept tied up in your father's personal interrogation room and will stay there until everything moves smoothly tonight. You feel bad for her. It's not like she's responsible for what is happening to you. But she also hid the magical spinning wheel from the king and queen so maybe she's also not innocent.
You sigh when suddenly your bedroom door opens. A maid walks in and bows to you. "His and her majesty have requested your presence in the palace hall, your highness." You nod and tell her that you'll be there soon.
You're dressed in a fine gown that falls down to your ankles. It's adorned with jewels and your body is glistening with oils and perfumes. You're looking like a real princess. Maybe it's for your eighteenth birthday or maybe it's because you believe this might be the last time that you can dress up in case your destiny fails to change.
You reach the hall that is surrounded by guards. Inside also there are guards in every corner and Maleficent is kneeling with chains holding her down.
You look at your parents who are looking back at you. You think one of them told you that everything will be alright but you don't remember anything. Too much is running through your mind and you're too scared to hear anyone say anything.
When midnight strikes four guards carry a huge spinning wheel into the room. You take a deep breath and walk up to it.
You hesitantly look at it and finally touch the needle on the spindle. You push your finger into it until it pricks you and you can feel the sharp pain run through your finger. A single drop of blood falls onto the spinning wheel and suddenly your mother screams.
You turn around sharply. "Mother?" You say. Now you're really scared. What just happened?
"You lied." Your father says. His eyes are glued onto Maleficent.
She mouths a simple 'I'm sorry' and looks down in defeat. The next person to scream is your father. He falls down on the floor and slowly every guard in the room also falls down.
You run over to your parents and shake them. "Mother. Father. Mother! Father! Wake up. Oh my god. What happened to you guys?" You're crying now. Not sure of what went wrong.
"They won't wake up." Maleficent says.
She's . . . Awake? "What did you do!" You yell at her.
"She didn't do anything."
You look up to find the source of the voice. A man walks in casually through the front doors of the hall. His hands are in his pocket and his head is bent down. When he looks up, you gasp.
"Oh! You recognise me." Philip grins. "We'll I'm pleasantly surprised that you do. I didn't think I left such an impact on you in our last meeting but I'm glad that I did."
"What are you doing here? Did you do this?" You ask. Your voice is shaking from anger.
"I can't take all the credit but yes I am the one who did all this."
"Why?" You're holding all your tears back at this moment.
"Because I love you. And I wanted you. But I wanted you only for myself. I didn't want anyone else to have you. So, this was the only way."
You look back at your parents faces. You can't control the next few tears that come out. "What did you do to them."
"They're not dead, beautiful. They're just . . . Affected by magic. See, when you pricked your finger on the spindle it activated my wish from years ago. When I first got the spindle, I wished that it didn't matter what you wished for or how you wished for it, the moment you used the magical spinning wheel for a wish- everyone in your kingdom- excluding you, will be out into a perpetual and deep sleep. So, currently your parents and their entire kingdom are fast asleep. Forever." You sob louder this time.
He steps closer. With each step he continues speaking. "I met you years ago on your sixth birthday. The same one where Maleficent predicted your destiny. After she vanished I captured her and held her captive. She told me about this spinning wheel that can grant any wishes so I asked for you and of course for your wish to turn out-" he gestures at everyone's sleeping form in the room, "-like this. I captured her because I wanted her to tell me how I could help make that destiny true. Of course I knew that the man who would steal you away would be me. I knew that even before your birthday when your destiny was read. Maleficent only helped me in confirming what I knew to be true."
Now he's standing right in front of you. You look up at him and your eyes meet. "I sent her to your kingdom. Your father couldn't find her because I held her captive. I told her to get caught in a foreign land years later so it would look like she was trying to hide and run away. At first she did but it was easy to threaten her about torchering her . . . Again. I told her to tell your parents about the spinning wheel and I was the one who sent you those letters, those gifts all this time- which by the way. I am very sad that you never used it. But it's alright, when we get married you will have to use everything i own."
You stand on your shaky legs. Your eyes are not leaving his even once. "You ruined my life." With that, you move your first forward to punch him. Without even blinking he grabs your fist in his one hand. His entire hand covers your fist like you're some sort of a child.
"Now, Now, beautiful. You shouldn't try to hit your future husband." You try to pull your fist out of his hand but he just grabs it tighter and pulls you forward.
You fall on his chest. His other hand grabs your waist and rubs it over your back. "You feel so good against me."
"Let me go!" You say. But his hold on you is so tight that you can barely even move.
He comes closer to your face and gently whispers. "What if I told you that I can save your parents." You stop moving and stare at him with wide eyes. He grins. "Not only that, I can also save your entire kingdom. I can wake them up."
He continues speaking, "A part of my wish is that everyone will wake up from their sleep only if you become my bride. The moment we get married, this sleep comes off. But if you don't agree then I'm going to take you away and marry you anyways. If that happens then everyone will stay asleep until they age in their sleep and die. Sleep will only come off if you agree to marry me. Otherwise I don't mind taking you against your will." You take in a sharp breath at his words.
"Don't try to run away." He warns. "My guards have surrounded your entire kingdom and with everyone asleep, no one will save you. Being the king of a nearby kingdom has its perks for me." That revelation of information only makes you hate him more.
"I will leave you in your room. It's a little later than midnight now. You will wear the dress that I have prepared for you. It's already in your room. If you agree then you will sleep in that dress. If you don't agree with my condition then sleep with what you're wearing now. I will seal the deal with a kiss. Only then will everyone wake up."
You don't get to say anything to him because there's already a bunch of guards who have walked din and they're grabbing you and taking you away. You try to fight back and protest but they don't let you go.
You scream, you yell. Heck, you even claw at them but they don't move at all. You look back one final time to see that Maleficent has been set free and she runs away. Philip on the other hand is watching you be taken away with a smirk.
There's another sight that you see. The spinning wheel is being set on fire. Two guards are dousing it in petrol and another one holds a match. He's really thought this through. This man is burning an entire magical spinning wheel so that no one else can use it to make a wish again. You know that he's doing this so no one uses it to wish for you. He's doing it to make sure no one can save you from him.
You're left alone inside your room and the guards walk out. You pound against the door but no one listens. How could they? Your entire kingdom is sleeping. No one will come to help you. And these guards belong to Philip and his kingdom. They won't listen to you.
You suddenly look at the dress on.your bed. It's the exact same dress that you received last time. In the cottage with a letter. Except this time, it's pink. There's a note on the dress that says: I believe you didn't like the previous one because of its color. Here's something new for you to wear.
You hold the dress and try to stop your tears. You know what you need to do no matter how much you don't want to.
Quietly you take off your clothes and wear the dress. After all the sacrifices that your parents have made for you, you can't let them die like this. You can't be selfish. You wear the dress. It's a perfect fit and you hate that he knows you that well.
You go to bed and get under the covers. While sleeping doesn't come to you. You force yourself to sleep. Your eyes sting from all the crying and yodi heart feels heavy.
Just as you're about to fall asleep the door opens. Footsteps get louder as philip comes closer to your bed. His hand grabs the side of your face. "You look like a real beauty even in your sleep. My sleeping beauty." With that he kisses you.
One by one, everyone in the hall will start to wake up. The whole kingdom that has been asleep until now will wake up soon. Before that, before the sunrise happens, Philip will take you away to his kingdom where you will marry him and become his queen.
You will stay there, with him, forever. He did indeed steal you. Being loved too much was a curse after all.
"welcome to our happily ever after." Is the last thing that Philip says to you.
