Alien Sex Fiend - "Curse"
Last time on r/goth's 100 Essential Albums, we looked at Bat Nouveau's "Metamorphoses". The review was a resounding, "Well, that was nice. Decent even." Today, we're going through the always iconic Alien Sex Fiend's 1990 release Curse.
Alien Sex Fiend hails from London and was formed in 1982 at the Batcave. The original lineup was Nik Fiend, Mrs Fiend, Yaxi Highrizer, and Johnny Ha-Ha. They're theatrical and campy with a...diverse sound.
They're one of the OG goth pioneers and if you haven't listened to them yet then you absolutely should. It's pretty much always a good time. I do have to say I wouldn't necessarily consider them a good intro to the music - they might sound a bit odd to the uninitiated.
The album is 15 songs and just shy of an hour long. It's a great album from start to finish. Loads of fun, easy to listen to while still being strange and interesting to the ear. Katch 22 was my fav song off this one.
Next up is Sisters of Mercy's "Floodlands" - so much for discovering new music xD
"When I last photographed them together in London George desperately wanted a picture of the two of them kissing. At first Jon flatly refused, but after an argument and a sulk, he gave in and eventually agreed to pose for an astonishing picture of him kissing George on the cheek." The "astonishing" picture, taken by Levine, was printed center spread with the piece. If Levine thought that picture was astonishing he should've seen what Jon and I used to get up to with a Polaroid camera.

r/goth's 100 Essential Goth Albums
Been feeling gothy lately, but I keep going for the same 10 songs I know I love. Desperate to discover and rediscover some cool groups, I decided to trust in Reddit. I found a randomizer, stuck the list in, and I'm going to go through each one of them and share with you folks what I think.
First up is Bat Nouveau's "Metamorphoses". According to Last.fm, Bat Nouveau is a gothic deathrock band from Australia that got together in 2008. The band consists of Todd Manion and Alex Palmer. Metamorphoses was released in 2015 and appears to be the band's only album. It has 11 tracks and is 46 minutes long.
Honestly, not my favourite album. It was by no means bad, just didn't have a ton that caught my ear. It's something I'd put on in the background. Dust and Funeral Eyes were my favourite, Ghosteps was the only one I wouldn't listen to again.
Next up will be Alien Sex Fiend's "Curse".

My phone is weird and insists on not uploading photos in the correct order but the way they're showing for me is pinterest board, lockscreen, home screen, song. My lockscreens are cats I have (the tabby on the bin, Cass) or the ones that have passed (Minnie, the fat dilute tortie in front of the bin, and Molly, the tuxedo).

The 'real man' in George's life is, of course, Jon Moss, someone who, by all accounts, was as straight as they come before hooking up with the Boy and who has carried on having the odd heterosexual dalliance ever since.
Their relationship has always been crucial to the group. Apart from his skill in whipping Culture Club into a commercial proposition, Jon has actually moulded a hell of of a lot of the George we hear in interviews. From him comes much of the intellectual undertow to George's babble.
All that stuff about 'strong moral codes', for example. Jon has never got on well with Philip Sallon or Marilyn or any of that crowd, but does seem genuinely to care for George and is keen to keep him on the, um, straight and narrow. If George is now a wilder and less popular character than he used to be, this may in part be because Jon's watchful influence is waning.
A funny Take It Like A Man thing - George remains convinced the straight men he comes across who have encounters with men are all in denial about their sexuality, secretly gay but deeply ashamed of themselves and too cowardly to overcome it. Even though he began to engage sexually with women while in the midst of his addiction.
Jon split with Caroline and moved back into his parents' place in Hampstead and we got on with the business of falling in love and finding a new guitarist. It was such a perfect moment in my life - everything was coming together.
With Jon there was more affection than I'd ever known. Sex was tender and adventurous. My other boyfriends were all planks of wood who were happy to get blown off and roll over. It was like learning to love from scratch. I couldn't believe Jon had never been with another man, though he swore blind. Eventually he admitted to once kissing his friend, but I always suspected he was hiding something.
That evening he turned up on the doorstep with cat scratches all over his face. Caroline had attacked him. He said she was screaming at him, in front of all of their friends, "You fancy George, don't you? You spend enough time with him." I asked him what he said. He looked at me dead straight. "I told her it was true."

Jon: I used to talk about karma with George and he used to call me an old hippie until I explained to him what it meant. George: Yeah because he just used to keep saying, "Karma. Karma."
"Blimey," said Jon. "You look great." I loved turning up at clubs with him. I let people think what they liked - they always did anyway. When Jon dropped me at home he kissed my cheek and said, "I won't be able to sleep." I ran inside and sat down on the stairs in the dark, I could have strangled myself for not grabbing hold of him.
We spoke the next morning. Jon had to go to a party with Caroline, but he said he'd see me Sunday and joked, "How will we live without each other for one day?"
Jon invited me round to his flat while Caroline was away skiing. He drank too much red wine and started pouring out his heart. He'd been fighting with Caroline, she said he was selfish because he wanted to stay in London and work with the band. He said I could stay the night. I could see there was only one bed and panicked. "Er, er, no. I'll go home." I didn't know if he was coming on to me or just being thoughtful.
