I know this image is probably from an old TV show or movie (my brain wants to say Batman?) but I had to figure out what computer that was because I recognized it! They have one at the Computer History Museum.

That’s an IBM AN/FSQ-7 Combat Direction Central, commonly known for its role in the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment, a network of AN/FSQ-7’s from the 50s, commonly known by its acronym of SAGE.

Okay, I’m not done yet. This isn’t even the computer your seeing here. These are just some of the consoles. The computer is much MUCH bigger.

In fact, this is the single physically largest computer ever constructed, at 275 tons, half an acre of floor space, spread out over 4 floors, and consuming 3 megawatts of power. Two computers per building for redundancy (with a really good reliability due to having a hot standby), using 49 thousand vacuum tubes because this is 1950s computer technology we’re talking here. And we built 23 of these things! The first one was sorta running by 1957, but the whole system wasn’t fully deployed until 1963, and didn’t cease operation until 1984.
