The Geometry of Ornament

The Carpet paintings emerge as a natural extension of a research process I have been developing for several years around the carpet, both as material and as cultural sign. These new pictorial works (Carpet painting #1 and #2) maintain a direct dialogue with a series of installations and sculptures also created with sectioned carpets, which can be viewed together at this link.

Once displaced from their utilitarian and ornamental function, carpets become carriers of a geometric logic that reveals the closeness between decoration and the pursuits of modern abstraction. This relationship is evident in earlier works such as Sculptural tradition IV (2015), where a carpet fragment gives rise to a metal sculpture, or in The origin of the circle (2014), where the cutting and arrangement of the carpet highlight the tension between ornament and the rationality of geometric design. In both cases, decoration ceases to be a secondary embellishment and instead reveals itself as a structural core, a principle of order that precedes and converses with the abstract tradition.

The new paintings pursue the same line of inquiry, but now through pigment and the manual trace. The carpet is no longer solely the intervened object, but also the texture and pattern which, once transposed onto the pictorial surface, generate a hybrid field between the material and the representational. Here, the ornamental motif leaves the ground to become image, imprint on the wall, expanding the field of painting towards a space where the memory of the object overlaps with visual construction.

In this passage, painting becomes a site of synthesis: it integrates the materiality of the carpet, the history of ornament, and the genealogy of abstract art. Thus, decoration—traditionally relegated to a marginal place within the history of modern art—asserts itself as a generative force of form, as a key to understanding the rational dimension of ornament and its capacity to produce visual thought.
