consultation
who: jia @oatfoams
where: loulou's diner
there she sat at a large booth table with her materials neatly set on the table in front of her as she waited for her colleague to arrive. looking completely out of place with her designer clothes in the middle of pinehaven's beloved diner with only coffee having been ordered thus far. with her tablet on the table, she draws complicated seating charts, decoration configurations, updates her calendar and sends off several emails to the different vendors to ensure everything is perfect for the wedding. and everything will be perfect just as long as jia actually shows up. as long as she can agree to work with minerva for this one project for one of the sweetest couples she has ever met. see, the thing is, she would have never taken this couple if she had known they wanted to be styled by her ex fiance. she still wanted to drop the wedding when they brought her up but what they said made her drop her guard and continue on. they were a young lesbian couple and they very much reminded her of what she used to be like with her once love. they told her they wanted one of the famous "minerva & jia weddings." to be styled and taken care of by lesbians would mean everything to them. 'damn, they found my kryptonite' she had thought right before a text was sent to jia requesting they meet up in person for a consultation and a request to collaborate.
jia wasn’t necessarily surprised to see minerva’s message in her inbox, but knew whatever it was must’ve been particularly important if she was asking to collaborate again. admittedly when she opened the message, her heartstrings, too, were tugged knowing it was a younger lesbian couple that had requested her styling.
with a defeated huff, she stood in front of the diner’s entryway, hesitating for but a moment before she swung open the door. her heels clacked against the tile like a calling card as she made her way toward the table, peering at the back of minnie’s blonde head over the booth seat. over her shoulder, she could see minerva sketching some seating arrangement, a small ‘hmph.’ announcing her presence. she slid into the empty space across from the other woman, her arms crossed almost defensively over her chest. “ well … what theme did they decide on. i’ll have to match the color palette when i’m pulling pieces together. “ though she might have trouble saying it aloud — jia would always answer minnie’s call if she was brave enough to reach out to her. “ you gonna order me a cup ? “ jia retorted, her head gesturing toward the mug that was sitting on an old coffee ring stain; a memory of the countless cups ordered by other customers’ throughout the diner’s history.

sachiko had been prepping herself to go inside for the last half hour. not only did the idea of getting a new tattoo from a new tattoo artist make her anxious, the thought of the small talk with the artist also made her anxious. it was saturday and she had left her mother and her star employee to open the store by themselves, which didn't help her anxious energy. 'it's going to be fine, don't worry about it. mom ran the tea shop without you before you took over. she can handle one saturday without you.' she took deep breaths in her car, focusing on grounding herself by gripping the steering wheel in her hands. once she felt good enough, she stepped out of the car and walked inside.
of course, the check in process wasn't nearly bad as she had thought it to be. feeling bolstered by this, she took off her brown leather coat and walked towards the direction the receptionist told her to. she smiled at the artist as she approached, "hi, yes, i was wondering if you would be able to add to my pre-existing sleeve. i know sometimes tattoo artists aren't fond of working on others' work." she sits down, crossing one denim leg over the other, leaning slightly forward so she can show off the arm with the red spider lillies spiraling down from the bottom of her collarbone down to her elbow. "i had a few ideas if you are at least willing to work around/with what is already here?" she asked looking them in the eyes, her voice tight with hope and anxiety.
admittedly -- xochi noticed sachiko in the parking lot, seemingly mumbling words of encouragement to herself before stepping inside the door. they were delighted to see that she'd actually gotten herself inside, their lips curling into a minor smirk. before sachiko had even introduced herself, xochitl was admiring her spider lily tattoo that was left uncovered by the woman's top.
" xochi. " they gestured toward themselves. once they got sachiko in the chair, they observed the ink up close. the work was intricate & beautiful, the red accents were a favorite of xochitl's, the pop of color featured in a few of their own tattoos. " no worries -- if that's want you want, i'm down. " they gave a slow nod, taking in the woman's request. " i'm all ears. I can show you some of my portfolio if you want ? " their forearms could tell you almost as much about their work as any binder full of sketches & photos could. " really cool ink, by the way. it suits you. " they gave sachiko a sportive wink. " so ... whatcha got in mind ? " xochi's lap contained their tablet, ready to jot down any concepts the two conjured up.
jude had a rare day off from the shop, and he meant to take advantage of the time. he had spent the morning actually sleeping in, and figured instead of heading straight to the bar upon waking - he would check out the tattoo shop. most of his ink was old - the result of too much whiskey and not enough guidance to save his skin. however, it was the knife on his forearm that he wanted gone, tired of looking at it and remembering who he had been twenty odd years ago. he figured, hey, he'd been in pinehaven long enough - longer than anywhere else he had stayed. might as well commemorate the occasion with some new ink. so he had arrived, checked-in, and was headed back to the artist's chair when they greeted him. a small twitch to the corner of his mouth, nearly a smile, as he rolled his sleeve up to reveal a shoddy blade tattooed down his forearm. "you good with coverups?" he asked, eyes searching their face. "want a pine tree over this old thing."
xochi studied jude's forearm, the ink faded with some vague scarring, often the result of the artist's heavy hand. they were still somewhat new to tattooing, but had done enough ink on themselves & covered up plenty of their friends' inebriated decision to know what they were doing.
" ‘course. we'll get you sorted. " they assured, doing a partial turn to snatch their sketchbook off of their side table. they started to hastily thumb through the pages -- they thought they remembering drawing something similar in the past. as they looked for a potential reference that might fit the bill, their eyes flickered toward the sight of jude, then once again to the blade that adorned his arm. " so where'd you get that ? if you don't mind me asking ... " xochi was trying to be both curious & cautious, not wanting to pry too much into a client's personal life.
⸻ Felix noticed the subtle, amused curl of her lips when he gave his full name, but with his usual reserved nature, he chose not to question it. Instead, his intuitive gaze tracked her as she took a step or two backward, fully realizing how intimidating his six-foot-five frame could be to someone who barely reached his chest. A quiet, curious glint touched his hazel-green eyes as she mentioned she’d be wandering the streets regardless.
❛ What is it you do then? ❜ Felix asked, a touch of genuine interest softening his low London accent. ❛ I know you’re out taking Maple for a stroll right now, but what keeps you busy when you're always… "traipsing around"? Your words, love, not mine. ❜ Living the life of a traveling principal dancer could be incredibly isolating, and after recently losing a close colleague from the company and someone special, that quiet sense of loneliness felt heavier than usual. Having a local open up to him was a refreshing change of pace. When she confidently promised to get him settled, dubbing him London Boy, a slow, dry smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
❛ Right then, Red. Let’s see how long I actually manage to stick around.❜ He countered smoothly, matching her playful energy by executing a perfect fair-trade nickname. He hadn't exactly expected her tour guide offer to start immediately, rather than later, but he’d already logged at least half the miles he’d intended for his daily walk before Maple interrupted him. Since his schedule was entirely clear and he had nothing better to do than stare at the walls of his apartment, he took a step forward, his long, disciplined strides effortlessly adjusting to match her pace as he fell into step right beside her. As they began to head down the path toward the heart of the community, Felix looked down at her, tilting his head with a deadpan but genuinely intrigued expression. ❛ Since we're heading that way… what's your absolute favorite spot in the town center? Where's a bloke supposed to get a proper coffee around here? ❜
" well, maple needs a fair amount of exercise, so when she's bored of the backyard we do this. aside from that, i'm usually at work at the drive-in. sometimes I hang out at spin cycle, or if i'm terribly bored -- following my little brother around. " part of her wondered if he was actually asking in earnest or was poking at her word usage, though she would've answered either way.
' red. ' a nickname that was reminiscent of her primary school days, one of the least obnoxious. it was almost refreshing to have someone matching her energy. she pondered his question; despite the small size of the town they had a decent amount of cafes and teahouses, all of which made fantastic drinks that made her recommendation tough. " well, lg bean + t has great coffee, and some of the proceeds go to organizations & stuff. but if you're a real tea buff, i'd recommend the steep stop. minori & sachiko know their stuff. " this was nice -- getting to be proud of her hometown & the small businesses that resided inside. " maybe we should go on a coffee tour; that'd convince you to stick around. " darcy was mainly joking, but wouldn't be suprised if someone was charmed by the local cuisine enough to stay a while.
still not having many friends, or at least, not nearly the amount he was used to having, riot was out taking a walk to clear his head. though pinehaven was nice and the people were just as nice, he still couldn't get over how their mother just shipped them off to live with his cousin. sighing, he stuffed his ringed hands into his pockets and kept his head down while walking. so when he heard a distant "no!" and then felt a dog wrapping around their legs panting with a friendly smile on her face, they nearly fell over.
when they made eye contact with the dog, a big smile spread across his face as he kneeled down to ruffle the fur around her face and ears with both hands. "oy there love, aren't you just gorgeous?" so distracted by the absolutely beautiful creature in front of him, they didn't notice darcy come up until she started speaking. "oh don't even worry 'bout it. she's absolutely lovely." they stood up, reaching their hand out towards the girl in front of him. "names riot. i'm sure if you've stepped inside spin cycle records in the last 8 months you would have seen me." he squints his eyes, moving a bit too close to her face to look it over one more time. "come to think of it, don't you work at the drive in? i don't really have a car but i'm always watching a movie from one of the tables there."
darcy breathed a sigh of relief when riot seemed unbothered; he appeared rather happy to see the australian shepherd bounding their way. the redhead always enjoyed watching maple make friends far easier than she ever had, it was rare to see anyone resist the presence of a cute dog. she uttered a quiet 'thanks' before retrieving the leash. the two were getting on quite well but she wanted to be sure maple wouldn't slip away again at the sight of a squirrel, or some other woodland creature.
a warm grin tugged at the corner of her lips, giving maple a pet on the head in tandem with riot's. she did frequent appearances at spins, but they were usually brief trips to say hi to saffy & pick up a record or two. she may have seen him in passing, being sure she'd remember the name riot. darcy placed her hand in their own, returning the handshake. however when riot had closed the space between them with little warning, she tried not to yank herself away out of reflex. " uh, yes ... yeah. i'm the manager there. " she couldn't help but let out a giggle or two. " darcy -- reilly. darcy reilly. " she replied, exchanging their name for hers. " you're ... awful close there, huh ? "
his t-shirt was stained with fresh dirt from his early morning work on the graveyard grounds and remnants of his past, his jeans were tattered and worn as well, and his boots; and even the dark green baseball hat he was wearing to keep the sun out of his eyes had on had seen better days. his clothes were a badge of honor for his stubborn dedication to repetition and sticking with what he knew; what he was used too. it gave him a bit of comfort which he had been in short supply of for some time now; especially now being in a new place. walking down one of the forest paths, half acclimating himself to his new surroundings and half just passing the time away from other people, amos' borrowed stretch of solitary peace was interrupted as an australian sheppard came bounding towards him; it's leash dragging along the path behind it as it's owner yelled after it. well. yelled after her.
“no worries, ma'am, no need to apologize.” his southern drawl hung from his words like honey as he pursed his lips into a tight line, almost a smile, and lifted his head to look out from under the brim of his cap to see the person now approaching him. “uh, no-- no ma'am-- i don't reckon we have. i'm pretty new to the area, just got in a couple days ago. i don't really know anyone 'round here,” pausing, tucking his bottom lip into his mouth a bit, he furrowed his brows as he, instead of introducing himself, glanced back down at Maple. “Sorry-- you mind if I pet 'er?”
" uh no, I don't mind at all! she loves attention. " darcy snicker under her breath, her spare gather her cooper hair out of her face before letting it fall back onto her shoulders. " ah, well that makes sense. i've been seeing a lot of new faces around town. "
she eyed the stranger, taking note of his worn appearance -- not in a judgmental way, simply an observation that he must spend a fair amount of his time outside. she wasn't too dissimilar, her boots were almost perpetually painted with mud from how often her & maple would make these same walks. " this is maple, by the way. " she eventually spoke up, putting a name to the pup before introducing herself. " darcy. " simply put, pointing a finger toward herself. " welcome to town, um -- " darcy had started her greeting, but realized he had yet to give her any name. she let a brief silence hang between them, hoping he would put a name to the new face.
sher had only recently acquired a dog . it had taken so long for her to properly learn to care for herself that caring for a whole other being , animal or otherwise , had been put on the backburner . but being near her siblings , being in a place where community felt more like family , she finally felt the time had come for her to gain a furry , four-legged companion .
rusty had been whiling away the hours at the seattle animal shelter , lonely and waiting for the right person to walk by his cage . a few years old and rough around the edges , she saw a lot of herself in the little french bulldog . black as night and cute as a button , she'd brought him home with her the same day .
all that to say that he still wasn't quite trained yet . he was so excited to be out and about in the world again that listening was lower on his priority list than running around and causing chaos . so when the shepherd came barreling toward him , rusty went trotting in their direction with equal interest .
“ oh , please , don't be sorry , ” she insisted , tightening her hold on rusty's leash so that he didn't get anymore funny ideas . “ i can't say that we have . or maybe we have , and i don't remember . i'm not from around here , so anything's possible , ” she shrugged . she had seen a lot of faces throughout her life , but darcy's didn't ring much of a bell . “ why ? think you know someone who looks like me ? ”
darcy's eyes narrowed even further, searching her memory bank of faces for anyone who could look like sheridan. one person in particular came to mind. she thought of saffron, someone she'd become acquainted with, the two often spending their time together discussing spin cycle's newest records. her head tilted in curiosity at the prospect. " actually -- kind of. " she had a momentary pause before explaining further. " my friend saffy. I wouldn't say you're twins, but I could see the resemblance. "
darcy was happy to see the two canine's getting along, finding their difference in size a little amusing. whilst the two were talking, she knelt down to greet the french bulldog, giving him a small wave before rising to her full height once more. a recollection of saffy's mention of an older sister struck her -- she held out a tentative finger. " come to think of it, I remember them mentioning a sister ... could you be a harlow ? " she asked, inquisitive. her arms crossed over her chest, adorning an amicable expression that began with her smile & met her eyes.
would you believe us if we said that wasn't really KANG MINA? well, it isn't .ᐟ.ᐟ that's SOPHIA DAE, a proud resident of pinehaven for the last 26 YEARS (RETURNING AFTER LEAVING FOR A FEW YEARS). you can find them working over at RITA'S ROLLER RINK as a/an EMPLOYEE. they're 26 but they hardly look that old! it must be the washington weather that keeps them looking so young .ᐟ.ᐟ word around the town is that they're BRATTY, IMPULSIVE, & IMMATURE but we think that's silly. we feel like they're much more AFFECTIONATE, RESILIENT, TRUSTING. if we had to pick one song to describe HER, it would be SILVER JUBILEE BY AUDREY HOBERT. see ya 'round, SOPHIE .ᐟ.ᐟ

31: Most prized possession? (for Raya)
there's a bracelet that my mother hand wove for me, it has a south sea pearl in the center. she gifted it to me right before I moved to pinehaven actually -- after I finished school. I would say that is very precious to me.
45: Do they express their thoughts through words or deeds? (for Xochi)
I don't know -- maybe deeds. words can be hard -- and anyone can say anything, I try to express myself through actions. but i've also been known to give someone a piece of my mind.
35: What activities do they enjoy, but consider to be a waste of time? (for Elodie)
well -- I tried junk journaling for a minute, but I have a habit of half finishing something then forgetting it exists & never picking it back up. so now there's just a book that's half full of trash glued to the pages floating around somewhere in my apartment.
❛ do you want to dance with me? ❜ (To Darcy from Hanne)
" of course I wanna dance with you, mom. " darcy chuckled. she'd walked in whilst her mom was preparing friday night dinner. the redhead could hear the low notes of the music hannelore was playing in the background for ambience.
she was about to start helping with some vegetables when her hand was grabbed; darcy being incapable of suppressing the grin that crossed her face as she was spun around, now dancing along to the soft noise.
