Obelisk has moved! I'm now hosting with ComicFury, and am no longer a part of Hiveworks Comics.
While the comic is on hiatus, I'm still hard at work - you can follow all my progress on my graphic novel, A Longshot Out of the Birdcage, over on my Patreon~
Revisiting some of my Obelisk art while I set up the comic's new home over on ComicFury! It's still a work in progress over there but I love & miss my goth children...
Nicky Flores runs into Henrietta Roth on the worst night of her life - after losing her relationship, home, and job prospects all in one fell swoop. So when the charming, smart-mouthed butch offers her not just a place to stay, but a position at Birdie's, the nightclub she manages, Nick thinks her luck has miraculously changed. It just might have, too - if she could just ignore the shady dealings that go on in Birdie's back rooms, and Henry's strangely profound loyalty to the club's mob wife matriarch.
Henry herself isn't big on answering questions - she's worked too hard, for too long, to earn her spot near the top. Twelve years making good on all her debts, and stomaching the worst that was thrown her way. So what if Nick sees something different in her? Is one new relationship going to stop her now?
A Longshot Out of the Birdcage is my crime drama gn in-progress! It tells the story of two butches working at a mob-backed nightclub in 1950s Asbury Park, what they do to survive - and if they can stay together in the process.
You can read the last 4 pages of this scene, loads of my research & development, and the entirety of the first two chapters of script, (that's like, 50 pages of comics!) exclusively on my Patreon!
Thanks so much for all the love on this, I've been working on these pages and this story for months (or, years, if we're counting older versions...) My heart has grown three sizes at all the excitement over my favorite butches YwY
If you grab a spot on my Patreon, you're in for a Pride month full of character intros, full chapters of writing, Nicky's beloved car, and Henry's tiny 1900s beach house that she sublets in a manner that is not shady at all
Here's a peek at the next scene's script, under the cut - in which Henry does, in fact, get Nicky that drink... ;>
===
It’s whiskey, apparently. Or bourbon - Nick never knew how to tell the difference, really. She’s barely ever tried them, and it all burned the same. It’s something that’s not watered-down beer or bathtub liquor, at least, in a neat glass set down in front of her with a chunky single ice-cube.
“…gee.” She murmurs. Who was this kid? Nicky looks over at the bar - cleaner here than the last place, the dim light giving atmosphere instead of just making it hard to see what kind of sticky mess you just put your shoe in.
Did Henry know someone here, maybe? Get a discount?
“I didn’t know what you liked.” Henry shrugs, sitting down with her own identical glass. She smiles, almost bashfully. “It’s okay, if you don’t wanna drink it.”
“S’alright.” Nick says. She nurses the drink tentatively - it burns the whole way down, but not in a bad way. Gives her the push to ask, “D’you… you work a union job, or something?”
“A union…?” Henry squints, not sure she heard right over the noise.
“You know, something that… pays good.” Oh, that’s a risky, stupid subject. “Ah, I shouldn’t - I just mean you don’t gotta, uh, go all out. A beer woulda been fine.”
“I don’t like beer.” Henry’s nose wrinkles. The pout she gives is childish, exaggerated. Cute, Nicky’s thoughts supply absently, warmed for a moment by alcohol.
She only registers, long after the right moment is gone, that Henry didn’t answer her question at all.
A Longshot Out of the Birdcage is a graphic novel about a conniving hustler and a temperamental loner who work for a mob-owned drag bar in 1952, New Jersey. When growing mob presence and creeping federal surveillance throw off the balance of their new life together, they each have to decide what they're willing to do to survive - and if they can really stick together to the end.
You can now read 10 pages of my butch4butch crime drama comic over on my patreon! Two 1950s dykes have the world's most terrible meet-cute, you'll never guess what happens next... ; )
You can finally read the comic I've been making lately!!! Henry and Nicky are very near and dear to my heart, and I hope everyone will love them just as much as they do the Obelisk cast <3
Margot has a lot of interesting stuff in her collection, and some of it requires demonstration~

The last Obelisk page for 2024 is here! I'm taking a break for the holidays to relax and draw my other comic about evil lesbians >: )
I shared my first ideas of this scene much earlier this year, which you can check out over on the blog! Eve really believes Margot must have found the secret to winning at life and never needing anyone to help or judge you... being in your 20s sure is a time u_u
Jumping between Eve's passion for then-relatively-new technology, and Margot's stagnation, is so much fun to dig into as a writer >:3 The cracks in Margot's facade begin to show - is she making do? Just how long has she told herself as much...?
Obelisk is my 1900s lesbian vampire romance comic! You can read new pages every Wednesday~
