faesandfaunas:
From the moment that Yveltal stated who he was, the flock seemed to have all their eyes on him if they didn’t already. Their gazes didn’t bother Xerneas any either, he was kind of used to this but he wondered exactly what was going through their minds. Not that he had time to wonder that for long, as when Yveltal began explaining he had his full attention.
It was hard to not be excited hearing him talking about his murder of crows, he just sounded so pleased with having connected to so many pokemon. That happiness he gained from it was just contagious to Xerneas, especially after hearing about what had happened to Yveltal in his absence before.
“No need to apologize, you know I never get tired of listening.” He replied with another dismissive wave to the idea that he was just rambling on. “But wow, I suppose you’ve went and become royalty yourself while I was away haven’t you? It’s like you’re their king from the way you speak about them, I hope your loyal subjects don’t mind a foreign one stopping by.”
He’s saying this lightheartedly but it’s also hardly a joke, though not getting into the fact that he is still loosely considered a prince. There is no king above him at the moment for him to be succeeding, however he still needed more experience before he could be considered a complete king. Though depending on who you asked among the fae, he might as well have already been there.
“It is very nice to meet all of you,” he waves in greeting towards the Murkrow and Honchkrow, before turning back to Yveltal. “I’m guessing the discussion went well overall though? And I’m glad to hear I didn’t disrupt anything, I was just worried when I saw you weren’t there.”
“I suppose I have.” Yveltal responds, clearly having never thought too much on it up until he thought on the outside perspective. “They have taken to calling me ‘King of Night’,” he explains further. Given how he was the strongest dark-type, he supposed the title made sense, after all. “I... must admit, it does feel a bit nice being known for something other than death, and referred to as such as well. They... do not seem to mind who I really am, and I do not have to keep my identity hidden around them.” Yveltal lifts a hand again, running it through jet black feathers of the Murkrow perched upon him.
It was refreshing, he had to admit. Not having to tiptoe around and be secretive as to who he really was. Yveltal liked this town, and the people in it treated him well - but only because he hid who he really was. He had tried, he tried to be honest with some of the people he used to live around, even with his ring, even without the risk of killing them. He was still met with that same animosity anyways. And here, he had hid his name entirely, and... it worked.
The Murkrow cawed in response towards Xerneas. Of course they didn’t mind! This was the beloved friend of their own king, after all, and anyone in his good graces were in theirs as well. They’d all heard many good things about the Fae Prince from Yveltal, and they certainly didn’t want to be the cause of any problems between the two. Perhaps they and the fae could even work side by side - they weren’t enemies despite their opposing typings.
“Oh yes, I would say so,” Yveltal casts a glance to the Honchkrow in the trees, ceasing their chattering for a moment to give him a collective nod of approval, “we were able to divide up their territories based on Kalos’ subregions, in a way that was fair to the three of them. One will be in charge of coastal Kalos, one in central Kalos, and the other in mountain Kalos. There is another Honchkrow that has authority over these three and the murder as a whole, I suppose you may call him my right hand. He can govern in case something were to happen to me, hibernation or otherwise. Unfortunately, he was unable to make it tonight, but I do hope you can meet him at some point. He is quite the old soul, though I think you would like him.”
faesandfaunas:
“Aw, that is sweet of them though. And while they were a bit early at it, I suppose they were right eventually anyway hm? They get the last laugh from the afterlife I suppose.”
“Surely they are looking upon us, from wherever they may be now, going ‘I knew it’. They were right in the end - that is for certain.”
morbid questions that i ask myself today: how does yveltal get into places where people have died. like houses. i wonder if he can choose to make himself ‘invisible’ to the living and to not be perceived by them, and can temporarily rend holes in walls/doors with his scythe and basically ‘cut’ through them to get into places he normally wouldnt be able to to access the dead and get their soul. or maybe whenever his scythe is in hand (which is only when he needs to reap a soul) it just automatically makes him unperceptive to any living person around him. 🤔
faesandfaunas:
“I may have some fault in that, they brought up their belief of us being married to me too sometimes while I was out. And I didn’t know if you told them that, or they were just mistaken.”
“So I just ran with whatever they said, and was too nervous to ask ‘did you tell them we’re married?’ Everytime I got home after that.”
“All I had told them was that we were living together, which... I suppose back then may as well have meant marriage all things considered. It caught me off-guard the first time they’d asked me - I wasn’t sure what to say. They were vehement about it, even in Exile’s Garden... they had told me to say goodbye to you before we got to the dropoff, which is why I did that when I got back home that day. Still referring to you as my husband, even at the very end.”
faesandfaunas:
“And they never believed you no matter how many times you tried to tell them differently.”
“Of course, they thought I was lying every time I told them otherwise. They wholeheartedly believed it up until their final days, and even after that.”
HIS NEIGHBORS WOULD EVEN REFER TO XERNEAS AS HIS HUSBAND TOO-
faesandfaunas:
“Oh– no you didn’t,” he waved a hand to dismiss the very idea with a nervous laugh. “I ah… mostly woke up because I realized you weren’t there and I wondered what was going on, but my apologies for interrupting.”
He is very sorry about the whole thing, but it is also hard to not be pleased to see Yveltal seemed to have his own group of followers like how fairy pokemon flock to Xerneas himself. It was cute to see the Murkrow perched on Yveltal’s shoulder, at least some pokemon were starting to see good behind his counterpart at last. Naturally of his own typing as well, he supposed he really shouldn’t have expected anything less!
“I’m glad you felt rested enough really, and at least I’ll know what’s going on so I won’t interrupt again. Still… it is nice to see that it seems you’ve made some friends?” He asks curiously, though telling himself also that he shouldn’t stick around for too long and let them return to their conversation shortly. If they really were followers, it was likely important to just them and no Fae Prince should be listening in.
… It is hard for him to not linger in wondering if they knew who he was, though if he’d gone unmentioned in light of being asleep for years and years, frankly he wouldn’t be surprised. At least Yveltal wouldn’t be in the same situation as himself, where the local fairies seemed ever so aware of Xerneas’ situation with Yveltal. Without him saying very much even, they just had to be so crafty didn’t they?
Yveltal smiles a little bit, shaking his head. “Ah, no need to worry. You are not interrupting at all. I believe we had gone over pretty much everything we needed to already?” He questions, eyes sweeping over the murder before him. The birds squawked in turn, Yveltal’s hand soon moving to pat the beak of the Murkrow on his shoulder. “We were just talking for fun at this point.”
Before, though, they had been discussing territories in Kalos. Though all of the crows worked under him and followed him, the Honchkrow still had their individual territories and Murkrow themselves. Yveltal would always have seniority, and was above them all (except for the Honchkrow that act as his right hand - that one had special privileges even above the rest), but allowing self-governing in groups seemed to be fair to him. It was just a matter of outlining those territories in a way that didn’t step on any toes.
“You do not need to concern yourself with that, truly, Xerneas. You can stay as long as you would like to.” One of the Honchkrow in the trees flew over to the other two, and Yveltal could hear them chattering quietly to each other. Not loud enough to make out what they were saying, however... curious. Perhaps he could ask them about it later on, if it was an issue that concerned the murder any.
“But yes, Kalos’ murder has become quite accustomed to me over the past few thousand years. They are such smart and intelligent pokemon - all pokemon are, really, but the crows are even smarter than you would think. I had fed one a long time back, when Zygarde had given me my ring - since I could interact with the living without fear - and I supposed that one Murkrow remembered it, for he kept coming back. And soon, there were more. I suppose we were able to find common ground upon sharing our typings. They have become a bit of an omen of death after so long, and have acted as my eyes and ears across Kalos...” Yveltal clears his throat. “Apologies for rambling. To make a long story short, though, they have sworn themselves to me, and now here we are. This, of course, is not the entire murder but a mere fraction. I am worried about the commotion it would cause if they all were to be here, so only several tend to come and visit at a time unless I am not at my home.”
Xerneas’ identity was not lost on the Murkrow either, of course, Yveltal having spoken of him to them many times before. A lot of them looked on curiously towards the god of life, unable to really talk among themselves like the Honchkrow due to their closer vicinity... but being able to see the subject of so many of Yveltal’s talks was pretty cool to them!
“Riding the tides, crux, astral grace Down silver locks to cosmic crossings How far have I come?
As Saturn devours, of mind-streams' oddity Rift wrought souls rupture, rippling All shackles have now fallen, nebulae horses pulse on Can I feel?
A handful of earth The only reminder M̪̪̜͖̻a̤̠̬̳̕ͅj̸̖̬̫e̡͔̲̹͇̻̻̫ś̞̩̦̦̖̬t̮̦̘͖̗̭̬͜y̮͕͓,̣̣͎̲̟͠ͅ ̖͇̪̞͙̩̠t̫͍̥͉̳ͅa͙̲ke̹͇͘ ͇̦̲̤͙m̠͡y̧̗̦̪̣͖̣ ͉͍̬̘͡h͔̭ͅa̹͔̯͖̯͉͔͠n̳̭̬̬̼̞̲d͔̹̰͈”
i just think this is the Perfect example of how yveltal would sound if he did get good at singing in this genre and im still not over it
Boy, he sure hope nothing bad happens to Serena while she’s in Paldea! Hopefully he won’t have to drop everything he’s doing and fly over there faster than he ever has flown in his life- that would be so silly!!!
Exile’s Garden - ‘Tween the World of the Living and Dead
Nestled in the middle of the living world and the afterlife is a path. It is long, winding, and made of cobblestone. It is a realm of ethereal beauty and peace, though a solemn sadness hangs in the dark air - for this is where spirits are ferried from the living world, to their next life.
Exile’s Garden is realm that acts as a gateway, and is a place that only Yveltal can access unless he were to bring someone along; though this is not advised for a multitude of reasons that will be explained later.
The path found in the realm is flanked with flowers, hundreds and thousands of them. These flowers are eternal flowers, colored a deep black and red, resembling the god of death himself. Never to wilt or die, the flowers can exist in the most treacherous of places, void of light and water and may still thrive. They truly are eternal in every sense of the word, and these flowers have existed in Exile’s Garden for millions of years, some for even longer, having originated from this realm.
They are the only plantlife found in the realm beyond the trees, spindly branches and dark wood covered in pristine, pure white leaves. The leaves fall like snow, withering and dying days after hitting the ground. Along with that, vines snake their way along the trunks of the trees and further beyond that, colored an almost black, deep green.
The only source of light are glowing orbs hung suspended along the path, cloaking parts of the path and Exile’s Garden in a glow. Forlorn spirits that had accepted their death and made it that far, but did not want to continue, also give off sources of light.
A river flows through the land, cutting across the path. A wooden bridge connects the path where the river intersects. The waters are dark, darker and deeper than the night sky, and makes no noise as it flows. Drinking these waters gives instant and pure bliss to those who taste it, washing away all sadness and anger - however the water is addicting. It becomes hard to leave the riverbank, wanting nothing more than to drink, and drink, and drink. Those who tempt the fate of the river are doomed to be stuck at its side for all eternity - the most fanatic of people immerse themselves in the water entirely, forever stuck at the murky bottom and reaching up to the surface endlessly.
The areas outside of the path, outside the soft glow of the lights, are perhaps the most dangerous of all in Exile’s Garden. These areas are why Yveltal is hesitant to bring anyone alive to this realm. Echoes of voices can be heard beyond the trees, a siren song beckoning those to heed its call. The voices are different for all who hear them, being the voice of their loved ones. Their family, their friends, their lover, their children... whether these voices are of those still alive on the other side, or are of those who have long since been deceased. Yveltal does what he can to sway spirits from being fooled, but some don’t listen and venture out.
The darkness that is beyond the trees is such a deep, pervading darkness, that it strips one of all their senses, utterly depriving them of all rationality. All sense of direction is lost, all sight, all hearing. It is intense, and those who wander beyond the light are lost for all eternity, never to be found, seen, or heard of again. A lost soul damned to wandering the darkness forever, tricked in their moment of weakness by hearing what they want to hear again the most - their loved ones. For one, final time.
Eventually, the path does reach it’s end. The end of Exile’s Garden, the end of the world. There, the very land drops off steeply and endlessly, a dark void. To him, it is merely an endless sky, with glowing souls cascading up and beyond where he can see... like lanterns floating away in the night. But to those departed, they see the afterlife. They see whatever awaits them beyond where Yveltal can go - at the end of Exile’s Garden.
“No, no père, you have to do it through your chest and not your stomach! That’s how you get the iconic metal scream. Like this-”
“OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH-”
“I see.... so it just needs a bit more bravado? Let me try again.” Yveltal clears his throat, making sure to breathe in with his chest instead of his stomach this time.
“Ooooohh-”
“I guess you’re not used to shouting anymore huh... it’s been way too long since you were last in an opera! Let’s get some vocal exercises going stat!!”

He was adjusting to sharing a bed with Yveltal, though funnily he only felt that way if he didn’t think all that hard about it. Thinking too much about it lead him to being flustered and odd with his counterpart, so he had to try his best to be normal… and yet that doesn’t stop him from not being so.
He could tell that Yveltal wasn’t there, and it’s debatably good that he wasn’t or Xerneas would have reached and probably disturbed him. But instead he reached and felt nothing but cloth sheets, making his eyes open and look around in the dark of the house. Not immediately seeing the God of Death, he sits up and talks softly into the shadows.
“Yvel?” He calls, and his senses adjust while he brushes his hair out of his face. There’s… talking outside, and he can’t place all the voices, but he does know he can hear Yveltal. He gets up, it doesn’t feel right that he’s not properly dressed for guests… but he does also intend on going back to sleep soon. He just wants to be sure everything is alright, not like the encounter sounds bad… but still.
He approached the back door and opened it slightly to look out. … Was he talking to a group of Murkrows?
Even with Xerneas’ presence causing Yveltal to sleep much, much better at night, there were still times where he would awaken and be unable to fall back asleep. Sleep truly wasn’t a necessity for him - moreso something he did to stave off hibernation for as long as possible - so there were times where his body decided that he had had enough. He had been fine with simply laying in bed until morning, until there was a quiet tap on the window. Yveltal had moved as carefully and quietly out of the bed as possible as to not disturb Xerneas any, heading to the backdoor to silently slip out into the night.
A dozen or so Murkrow greeted him in the moonless night, with a few Honchkrow flanking the trees at the edge of the backyard. Shockingly behaving while among each other despite any territorial disputes, but only likely due to the presence of Yveltal. Murkrow and their evolution were incredibly intelligent pokemon, he had come to learn. After he had fed one all those years ago, they’d became magnetized to him in a way, following him as their numbers steadily grew.
They effectively became his followers in a way, becoming his eyes and ears, swearing loyalty and allegiance to him. Yveltal hadn’t expected them to take so well to him, but he supposed to made sense after showing kindness to one of their kind centuries ago. That sort of thing, the species never forgot, and each generation worked under him following that. It was what caused them all to refer to him as ‘King of Night’, a title that was touching upon them bringing it up to him, and one that he held dear.
The noise of the door opening behind Yveltal made him jump, which in turn startled the birds slightly. Wings flapped a bit as some bolted up to the trees with their accompanying Honchkrow, while the more bold ones stayed put. Black feathers fell like dark snow from the night sky itself, Yveltal soon turning to see Xerneas there.
“Ah... did I wake you earlier?” Yveltal asks quietly. A few of the Murkrow that had scattered to the trees came back down, one deciding to perch on Yveltal’s shoulder for the time being. “Apologies if so... I woke up and could not get back to sleep. I suppose my body felt rested enough.”
“What waits beyond in exile's garden sings of the unknown The renaissance of death echoes eternally, all's not lost Death echoes Death echoes...”
“Ne obliviscaris.”
