Third hour in Malta and our @airbnb is by far my favorite one ever (at Qrendi)
Jess and I rode here on a tandem bike today... Our butts feel like we work in the red light district but it was worth it (at Zaanse Schans)
So this is where I have been living for the last three months... And it's rarely this sunny
Riomaggiore
Can’t wait to be here!!! Just a three exams to go!
Prague Overview
This is a simple list things I observed during my time in Praha
Cons
Lets be frank… driving is sketchy (luckily we had a chauffeur)
Old town has heavy tourist traffic
Cab drivers will screw customers on fare if they’re not careful
Bad traffic on outskirts of the city (we experienced a legendary detour)
Local beers are poured very foamy but that's part of the culture (don’t ask)
Absinthe does not get you high… obviously (google it)
You will always get checked by police going back into other countries
Be careful where you park your car
Cops will put a boot on your car faster than a cowboy
Pros (written while drunk)
Super fucking cheap
ummm… five story clubs
…Three story clubs
The clubs aren’t pretentious (see Berlin overview)
Two words: Karlin District
The castle is like… wow
One word: Uber
Beef tar tar will have you all heart eyed emoji
Good service in restaurants (see Germany post {not actually posted yet})
You can drink in a fucking igloo
And after that you can get high off of oxygen (see picture above)
Another one word ball buster: Poutine (thats right… fucking poutine)
You can get high and then go drink absinthe too make it seem special
You can negotiate with police (also called bribery)
They serve meat with more meat
The regional desert is alcoholic for pete sakes
Mulled wine to-go!
You walk everywhere… or stumble (my preferred method in Praha)
Four words: donut ice cream cones
Did I mention how fucking cheap it is???
Not gonna lie... Can't wait to go ham on the PDX food scene when I get back #butfirstitaly #pragueeats (at Eska)
Had a chance to stop by Tacos el Gordo during my recent trip to Las Vegas. #lasvegas #tacoselgordo #nevada #eeeeeats #travel (at Tacos El Gordo De Tijuana B.C)
The thing about Germany is that fulfilling cravings is damn near impossible...
First foreign music festival... Loved the fact that nobody had heard of Birdy Nam Nam (not pictured here) in Germany so I had the dance floor all to myself
A lot of this going on this autumn… but on the Oregon Coast… in wetsuits
Nordic camouflage.
#getoutdoors #upknorth Glacial LR Defender. Another epic shot by @donalboyd (at Iceland)
Next time I go to Iceland I am renting one of these Defenders. They’re built for the rugged terrain unlike the little Suzuki I rented.
Berlin Overview
This is a simple list things I observed during my time in Berlin
Cons
Not the most walkable city (extremely spread out due to the wall)
VALIDATE YOUR S AND U TRAIN TICKETS (expensive mistake)
One of the more expensive German cities (for good reasons)
Good clubs are very exclusive but are said to be the best in the world
The local specialty (Curry Wurst) is one of my least favorite German foods
Neighborhoods can be very isolated and boring (ex. Parliament District)
A lot of construction, which has the potential to ruin photo opportunities
Pros
Amazing History (Check Point Charlie, Eastside Gallery, etc.)
EATER has a “heat map” for food and cocktails (rare in Europe)
Convenient public transit to all parts of the city (make sure to validate)
Endless night life (go to Kreuzberg, Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg)
Trendy ethnic food (go to Chicha for best ceviche and Pisco in Germany)
Most people speak really good English
Home to some of the only guided tours I will ever go on
Biggest landlocked beach in all of Europe (popular for its nudity)
Berlin is also famous for their relaxed policies on public intercourse
Definitely a freethinking city and probably my favorite in Germany
“Poor but sexy” - Klaus Wowereit (former mayor of Berlin)
This year will be the 2nd year in my life that I have been abroad during the 4th of July... however, it is always worth it
Can't wait to get back to München to river surf
There's nothing American tourists like more than the things they can get at home.
Stephen Colbert
Iceland Overview
This is a simple list things I observed during my time in Iceland:
Cons
Everything is imported other than fish and lamb so food is very expensive. Come to think of it, everything is pretty expensive in this country.
The roads aren’t in the best shape and only certain roads are plowed and de-iced, which can be a bummer if you don’t rent the right rig. (ex. Golden Circle past Gullfoss in early spring).
Hard to use google maps and the neccessary GPS available at the car rental is quite expensive (around 16 USD a day).
Most affordable (for average young traveler) Air BnB’s are shared spaces and are often located in less desirable areas (mainly pertains to Reykjavik and other towns).
Rotten egg smell. A trade off for the infamous geo-thermal activity in parts of Iceland. There is a heavy sulfur smell, which definitely gets old after a few days.
Everything closes early! It is a very inconvenient country when it comes to just about everything other than the airport. Grocery store hours were incredibly hard to get used to, which can be frustrating when you are trying to travel the country “on the cheap”.
Food quality isn’t great. Be ready to live off of juices and cold cuts, which isn’t bad for the first couple of days. Fish of the day is always a good choice, but is still incredibly expensive.
All of the “you gotta hit it” stuff is very crowded, which can definitely detract from its beauty (especially Gullfoss).
Pros
This country will blow your mind. If you like gigantic waterfalls, unique wildlife, grandeur landscapes, hot pots, and natural phenomenons you better get your ass here now before everyone else does.
Amazing places to soak your bones! This was probably my favorite aspect of Iceland. Whether you find yourself at the infamous blue lagoon (make sure you make a reservation) or a hidden gem off of the hot pot website you’re bound to feel physically and mentally rejuvenated. If you’re going to go the corporate route my personal favorite was Laugarvatn Fontana, which is located right off of the Golden Circle Road and isn’t as touristy as one might imagine.
The country is extremely easy to navigate if you do a little bit of research prior to hitting the road and GPS is a definite must.
Icelandic natives were extremely helpful and most spoke english. Like any culture, you may encounter a sassy one once in a while.
Farm stays, farm stays, farm stays!!! Don't spend more than a day or two in the city! Farm stays are all over and are incredibly charming. We stayed at Holmur A Myrum on the SE coast and they were so accommodating. This is an affordable way to see the country side and get familiar with the culture.
Iceland Air. If is your first time going to Iceland I recommend the stopover, which allows you to experience the culture for up to seven days without anything other than a passport. The airline itself is incredibly hospitable and user friendly. Just pop in for a few days before continuing on. Whats the harm in that?!
Food may be expensive and unexciting at times but it is quite healthy...unless you’re eating at one of their many KFC’s.
