I've tried to pick mostly free things, though some things may cost a lil bit?? Don't worry I'm broke too lol
Assume everything is G-rated unless otherwise indicated. For books and movies, I've listed available platforms, but always check your local library if you can 📚✨️
The Good Master and The Singing Tree by Kate Seredy. Both paint a beautiful picture of rural Hungarian life in the early 20th century. The second shows how World War I affects the main characters and their family, and how they forge unity despite the war. Tw for antisemitism (which the main characters fight against), mentions of war and violence, very seldom racial slurs (g*psy being the only one, if memory serves?). Still G-rated though. Both are available for free on the Internet Archive, and on Amazon for about $10 each
Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Brilliantly written politics and combat, canon characters feel truly in-character, new characters are fleshed out and captivating. Available for about $12 individually in paperback; B&N has them for $8 individually in ebook format
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Incredibly eerie, but also very eye-opening about how Satan operates against God and His people. I'd say PG-13 bc it covers serious topics. Kinda pricey from most retailers ($25-ish), so check your library first
Dooku: Jedi Lost by Cavan Scott. An audiobook (DO NOT GET IT IN BOOK FORMAT IF POSSIBLE it's kind of a play almost), and a treat for Disaster Lineage and/or Dooku enjoyers. I once gushed about it to my professors in college and they actually listened, God bless them. Available on Audible and various audiobook platforms for around $12.99
[Insert obligatory "watch the original and prequel Star Wars trilogies" message here]
The Penguins of Madagascar (2014). A cult classic in my family lol. Available to rent for $3.99 on most platforms (YouTube, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, etc.)
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). One of my favorite films of all time, and definitely my favorite classic Hollywood film. Available to rent for $3.99 on most platforms
Robin Hood (1973). I grew up watching this on repeat and it's a comfort film now. Oodelally! Available on Disney+ or to rent for $3.99 on most platforms
琅琊榜/Nirvana in Fire (2015). I KNOWWWW this is 54 episodes long, so it's not really fit for this event (my apologies to the powers that be), buuuut I have to give it a shoutout bc it's SO GOOD ARGH. PG-13 for some mildly disturbing scenes (deadly illnesses be deadly), mild blood, and mentions of suicide/genocide. Free with subtitles on YouTube and Rakuten Viki
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). My ultimate comfort film. PG-13 for some mild sexual references, zombie pirates, non-gory violence. Available on Disney+ or to rent for $3.99 on most platforms
Hogan's Heroes (1965-1971). This show feels like hanging out with old friends. Typical 60s fan service ("oH LoOk pReTtY wOmAn iNsTa RoMaNcE"), some innuendo, features alcohol, but I'd say mostly G-rated (y'all I watched this when I was 9 lol). Free on Poob Pluto TV
啟示錄 (Revelation) by G.E.M. 鄧紫棋 (2022). A beautiful Christian album, one of my favorite albums of all time. English translations are available (DM me if you need help!). I'd recommend anything by G.E.M., but this is her best work imo
Anything by BTS, but specifically 💜this playlist💜 I've made as an introduction. These guys have incredible skill and broad diversity in their discography—there's something here for everyone (even my mom lol). English translations are easy to find if you're interested!
All Things Bright and Beautiful (2011) by Owl City. It's hard to choose between this and literally every other Owl City album, but this one is a particular fave
Brielle (2010) by Sky Sailing, aka Owl City. This song. THIS SONG. THE Y E A R N I N G RAAAAAAHHHH
I'm also a huge Mamamoo fan, so here's ✨this playlist✨ as an introduction! These girls are vocal POWERHOUSES good grief. English translations are available if you're interested!
The Rhythm of the Saints (1990) by Paul Simon. A beautiful album with strong influences from Brazilian music. I grew up on this!
寶貴十架 (The Precious Cross). One of my favorite hymns in any language. I'll post an English translation here
The Resurrection Letters, Vol. I and Prologue by Andrew Peterson. I usually don't care for CCM (it usually feels very milktoast and watered-down), but these are very dear to me
The Achaemenids by Farya Faraji. Lyrics drawn from an inscription on the tomb of King Darius. Certified banger 1000/10
a marvellous thread by arriviste. Lord of the Rings, Arwen Undomiel centric, Gen. This altered my brain chemistry forever
search results: none found, because lin chen is on vacation, gdi by qwertyuiop678. Nirvana in Fire, Teen (some brief language). Doesn't really make sense if you haven't seen the show, but I'm including it just in case and bc I love it lol
Not Placid Stars But Singularities by iceplanet. Star Wars, Vader POV, Gen. SO SPOOKY I LOVE IT
a surprise of roses by ineedausername1829. Star Wars AU. As someone who loves L.M. Montgomery's works AND is deeply obsessed with Star Wars, this is probably one of my favorite fics of all time I'm not even kidding
Omne Trium Perfectum by ineedausername1829. Star Wars AU, Leia centric, Gen. MY HEART WENT YEEHONK
The Ties that Blind by ineedausername1829. Star Wars, Vader POV, Gen. This is so freaking funny and also heartbreaking in its own quiet way
