One of the weird fun writing quirks in Fifty Shades is that every character has a couple traits that are used so constantly they become almost metonymies for that character - Christian Grey’s “gray gaze” and “long fingers,” Ana’s roommate’s tenacity. They’re so repetitive it crosses a line into feeling like epic poetry. The wine dark sea, bright eyed Athena, rosy fingered dawn, Christian’s long finger. You know, to help the oral storyteller remember what to say next.
