          he  was  insufferable  to  put  it  lightly  and  still  ,  they  find  themselves  often  in  his  company  and  to  be  fair  ,  it  was  lorie  who’d  pulled  him  into  this  situation  .  “  you’re  lucky  you  have  a  pretty  face  or  else  i’d  whack  you  on  the  nose  ,  ”  his  rambling  with  her  impatience  was  usually  a  recipe  for  disaster  despite  how  amusing  his  words  tended  to  be  when  he  kept  at  it  for  long  enough  but  it  was  either  this  or  suffer  alone  for  the  next  hour  .  “  you  know  i  don’t  think  it’s  as  simple  as  you  laying  on  the  ground  and  doing  nothing  —  for  one  you  can’t  keep  quiet  at  the  best  of  times  so  that  idea  is  out  the  window  .  you’re  like  a  furby  that  talks  when  you  don’t  want  it  to  and  after  you  take  the  batteries  out  —  frightening  really  .  ”  lorie  adds  ,  lifting  a  hand  to  rub  at  their  forehead  in  thought  and  coming  up  short  of  an  idea  before  interest  is  piqued  by  nas’  next  choice  of  words  .  “  what  unfinished  business  ?  please  don’t  say  you  let  some  teenagers  walk  all  over  you  or  steal  your  ice  cream  or  something  .  ”

a  soft  smile  forms  on  her  lips.  they’re  definitely  complete  opposites,  a  definition  of  two  different  worlds  &  it  wouldn’t  surprise  her  if  for  outsiders,  there  was  no  way  these  two  would  have  anything  to  talk  about  but  somehow,  this  dynamics  just  works.  “   is  this  where  i  say  i’m  proud  of  you  ?   ”  she  jokes,  finally  her  attention  focused  on  her  friend.  “   it’s  actually  one  of  the  ed  &  lorraine  warrens.  these  are  really  interesting,  you  could  give  them  a  try.   ”

          there  were  often  times  han  questioned  how  he  ended  up  becoming  friends  with  someone  like  sydney  —  someone  who  was  so  much  smarter  than  him  (  enough  to  most  likely  lose  brain  cells  whenever  she  spoke  to  him  )  and  yet  here  they  were  .  “  some  recognition  might  be  nice  ,  it  might  convince  me  to  serve  you  on  my  next  shift  ,  ”  he  jokes  halfheartedly  ,  hues  flickering  to  the  book  again  and  brows  furrowing  in  thought  over  the  familiar  names  .  “  the  annabelle  people  ?  hell  no  ,  i  like  my  eight  hours  of  sleep  ,  don’t  you  have  happy  ending  books  recs  ?  ”

          “   you   really   have   no   faith   in   me,    huh   ?   ”       and   confidence   builds,    for   now   he   has   something   to   prove.       but   his   shot   is   off—not   even   the   swift   motion   and   little   spin   gets   the   ice   cub   there.       it   strikes   the   left   side   of   the   woman’s   purse   and   ricochets   off.        “   fuck,    fuck,    fuck—SHE’S   LOOKING.       quick   lorie,    act   normal   !   ”

          “  zero  faith  ,  ”  they  comment  with  a  nonchalant  shrug  —  that  and  his  angle  was  completely  off  but  lorie  keeps  that  to  herself  .  instead  now  waving  over  to  the  woman  sending  daggers  their  way  before  returning  their  focus  to  the  drink  in  front  of  them  .  “  looks  like  you  owe  me  ten  bucks  ,  plus  extra  for  acting  normal  .  ”

       “    i    was    doing    just    fine,    you    know.    ”    voice    hums    with    insistence.    boots    gently    click    against    the    greying    pavement,    with    rows    of    street    lamps    illuminating    the    pair’s    way.    for    a    new    yorker,    margo’s    sense    of    direction    truly    was    horrendous     -    embarrassing,    even.    “    i    didn’t    need    saving,    i    would’ve    figured    it    out    eventually.    ”    hands    fall    to    her    side    as    she    trods    shoulder    to    shoulder,    “    worse    case    was    to    camp    out    at    luke’s.    ”

          hanseul  nods  along  (  not  that  he  agreed  at  all  with  her  but  she  didn’t  need  to  know  that  )  ,  then  proceeding  to  kick  a  stone  with  the  scuffed  up  edge  of  his  converse  before  looking  over  to  her  .  “  hey  now  ,  who  said  i  was  saving  you  ?  i  was  merely  giving  directions  out  loud  ..  to  nobody  in  particular  and  you  so  happened  to  have  heard  them  .  ”  he  explains  ,  smile  expanding  just  a  little  at  the  untrue  version  of  events  he’d  just  concoted  .  “  luke’s  is  a  good  place  to  camp  out  at  though  —  easy  access  to  fries  and  milkshakes  whenever  you  want  .  ”

            it  had  been  a  very  slow  afternoon  for  somin  ,  she  had  spent  majority  of  the  time  at  work  half  asleep  and  half  awake  ;  she  didn’t  have  a  lot  of  students  in  the  morning  ,  much  to  her  dismay ‘cause  she  has  never  been  a  fan  of  slow  days  .  thankfully  ,  her  afternoon  break  arrived  and  she  was  able  to  head  out  ,  and  there  was  no  other  place  to  stop  at  other  than  luke’s  .  entering  the  place  she  was  welcomed  with  the  nice  smell  of  food  being  prepared  ,  which  was  a  nice  surprise  .  her  eyes  immediately  found  hanseul  waving  her  over  ,  a  smile  quickly  adorning  her  features  as  she  made  her  way  over  .  ❝  i  knew  i  loved  you  for  a  good  reason  ,  han  .  ❞  placing  her  hands  on  her  chest  as  to  express  her  gratitude  for  him  .  ❝  oh  man  ,  you  left  the  hardest  part ‘cause  there  are  so  many  options  ,  how  do  i  choose  ?  any  recommendations ?  ❞

          time  at  luke’s  seemed  to  fly  by  (  especially  when  he  spent  most  of  his  shift  chatting  to  just  about  anyone  who’d  engage  with  him  )  but  moreso  whenever  a  friend  dropped  by  .  it  was  miracle  he  hadn’t  been  fired  yet  because  of  his  tendency  to  get  distracted  and  somin  entering  was  a  prime  example  of  it  .  leaning  over  the  counter  ,  he  nods  over  to  the  table  by  the  window  .  “  best  spot  in  here  —  you  get  a  good  view  of  inside  the  diner  ..  who  comes  in  and  out  and  you  can  see  anything  interesting  happening  too  .  best  of  both  worlds  if  you  ask  me  .  ”  he  justifies  before  continuing  ,  “  of  course  you  could  also  be  brave  and  try  out  a  completely  new  spot  ,  balls  in  your  court  .  ”

          her  eyes  are  now  looking  like  two  coins  in  your  pocket  as  she  hears  them  speak.  “   what  is  wrong  with  you  ?   ”  she  repeats  the  question,  loud  &  clear.  as  if  it’d  ever  result  in  anything   —   sydney  made  countless  of  efforts  to  change  anything  about  lorie’s  bad  habits  but  frankly,  nothing  worked.  which  amusingly,  drives  her  insane  but  she  doesn’t  give  up.  “   i  think  i’ll  have  plenty  of  time  to  miss  you  when  you  end  up  in  jail.   ”  she  snaps,  quietly  enough  so  no  one  outside  their  table  would  hear  her  but  loud  enough  to  show  how  irritated  she  is. 

          “  i’m  bored  ,  slowly  drifting  off  to  sleep  kinda  bored  —  that’s  what’s  wrong  ,  ”  not  the  answer  sydney  was  after  ,  they’re  sure  but  a  truth  nonetheless  .  lorie  enjoyed  a  good  book  as  much  as  the  next  person  but  today  was  not  the  day  to  be  cooped  up  inside  reading  .  “  if  i  end  up  in  jail  you  will  too  .  technically  —  as  an  accomplice  so  let’s  hope  i  don’t  get  caught  or  else  we’re  both  in  hot  water  ,  ”  they  know  they’ve  got  her  there  ,  that  as  much  as  sydney  would  like  to  deny  any  involvement  ,  she’d  also  failed  to  tell  on  lorie  ,  making  her  just  as  much  liable  .  “  anyway  ,  seeing  as  you’re  so  against  what  i  do  ,  i  suppose  you  won’t  be  interested  in  the  first  edition  copy  of  alice  in  wonderland  that  i  may  or  may  not  have  in  my  possession  .  ”

“   how  many  pages  did  you  read  ?   ”  she’s  a  little  bit  hesistant  about  actually  believing  him,  but  she’s  definitely  intrigued.  a  loud  sigh  escapes  her  lips  as  she  closes  the  book   …  she  knows  han  well  enough  to  be  aware  that  he,  indeed,  won’t  be  on  his  best  behaviour.  sydney  tilts  her  head,  as  she  analyzes  him.  “   wait,  when  did  your  shift  end  ?   ”  perfectly  trimmed  eyebrows  raising  up  as  she  doesn’t  remember  when  anyone  switched  him  on  his  shift  but  to  be  fair,  she  could’ve  just  lost  herself  in  the  book.  

          “  enough  ,  ”  though  nowhere  near  enough  if  he  compared  it  to  sydney’s  likely  standards  .  he  would  admit  he  was  relieved  once  the  book  consuming  all  her  attention  was  closed  completely  and  put  to  one  side  .  “  a  little  while  ago  ,  don’t  worry  i  would’ve  nudged  you  a  little  harder  if  it  had  been  too  long  .  ”  han  jokes  ,  glancing  round  the  diner  momentarily  before  his  gaze  finds  sydney  again  and  he’s  reaching  for  her  book  .  “  what’s  so  good  about  this  book  anyway  ?  you’ve  barely  blinked  since  you  opened  it  .  ”

                         ‘          uh     yeah          ,          what     else     would     i     make     it     if     not     6969          ?          do     you     know     how     many     times     i’ve     had     my     phone     broken     into     this     past     year          ?          twelve          .          you’re     not     special          ,          get     in     line          !          ’          utterly     uncouth          ,          boy     not     suited     for     prose     or     mannerisms          .          digits     dance     along     cracked     glass          (          a     feat     that     the     screen     is     still     visible     and     legible          ,          really          )          and     lip     is     taut     between     canines          .          ‘          you     didn’t     mess     with     my     village     did     you          ?          i’ve     spent     too     much     money     on     clash     of     clans     to     have     it     go     to     waste          .          ’          relieved     sigh     that     spills     from     lips     is     extravagant     but     god     what     does     he     live     for     if     not     the     drama     of     it     all          ?          ‘          listen          ,          if     you     wanted     to     go     on     a     boys     date     you     could’ve     just     said     so     han          ——          i’ve     got     eighteen     bucks     left     on     this     gift     card     so     we’re     hitting     the     town     baby          !          ’

          “  twelve  times  and  you’ve  still  not  bothered  to  change  it  ?  you’re  a  genuine   mystery  to  me  sometimes  —  though  i  will  admit  your  phone  didn’t  have  anything  notably  interesting  on  it  so  i  can  see  why  you  don’t  care  .  ”  shoulders  ease  from  previous  tension  and  a  poor  attempt  is  made  to  bite  back  the  almost  mischevious  grin  on  his  face  .  “  you’ll  just  have  to  see  for  yourself  ..  ,  ”  admittedly  he  dare  not  touch  his  village  (  mostly  out  of  fear  of  what  his  reaction  may  entail  )  ,  but  it  was  always  fun  to  keep  the  app  open  ,  leaving  nas  to  hopefully  ,  ponder  over  what  he  might’ve  done  to  his  prized  village  .  “  eighteen  bucks  left  huh  ?  that  should  be  enough  to  keep  us  entertained  for  a  little  while  —  provided  someone  doesn’t  spend  it  all  in  one  go  .  worst  comes  to  worst  we  can  go  trouble  ethan  at  work  .  ”

          fingers  tap  idly  at  the  counter  ,  waiting  for  the  ping  of  the  door  to  go  and  all  but  jumping  when  it  finally  does  and  their  gaze  finds  nas  .  waving  him  over  with  urgency  ,  they’re  quick  to  pull  on  his  sleeve  leading  him  behind  the  front  desk  and  down  to  crouch  on  the  floor  —  away  from  her  lurking  manager  and  shielded  by  the  chipped  wood  counter  .  “  nas  ...  my  favourite  man  ,  bestest  friend  ,  donkey  to  my  shrek  ,  please  say  you  came  armed  with  a  super  believable  excuse  to  get  me  out  of  work  early  or  else  we’re  stuck  here  for  an  another  hour  —  and  yes  i  definitely  meant  we  . ”   they  begin  ,  “  you  and  i  ..  here  ,  bored  when  we  could  be  out  there  doing  so  much  more  ...  ”  perhaps  a  tad  dramatic  but  they  had  to  be  if  they  wanted  his  help  .

          scrambling  to  return  nas’  phone  back  to  it’s  original  position  as  the  other  returns  ,  han  can’t  help  the  not  so  innocent  grin  across  his  features  .  “  you  know  ,  you  should  really  think  about  changing  your  passcode  ,  it  was  too  easy  to  get  into  to  —  i  changed  some  of  your  contact  names  by  the  way  .  ”  he  admits  almost  annoyingly  nonchalantly  as  if  it  were  an  everyday  action  except  it  wasn’t  and  boredom  was  the  only  real  excuse  he  had  .  “  and  being  the  good  friend  that  i  am  ,  i  helped  you  out  by  replying  to  some  unread  texts  ,  you  can  thank  me  by  taking  me  out  to  lunch  whenever  you  like  .  ”

          han  had  never  been  one  to  ghost  or  sneak  out  but  with  sam  he’d  found  himself  lost  for  words  —  they  might  as  well  have  called  it  ghosting  one  another  .  still  ,  he  hates  the  silence  between  the  pair  and  intentionally  seeks  her  out  ,  armed  with  what  he  hopes  is  considered  a  peace  offering  —  food  .  setting  the  bag  besides  her  and  hopping  up  onto  the  wall  ,  he  pushes  his  hair  away  from  his  face  with  a  swoop  of  his  hand  .  “  have  you  had  lunch  yet  ?  ..  we  haven’t  hung  out  for  a  while  .  ”

          they  recognised  him  instantly  (  like  they  did  with  almost  everyone  who  crossed  their  path  )   and  can’t  stop  themselves  from  moving  away  from  their  cosy  corner  table  and  to  the  stool  besides  him  at  the  counter  .  “  the  first  time  i  saw  you  in  here  ,  you  had  a  strange  coloured  green  sweater  on  ,  not  quite  swamp  green  but  not  shrek  green  either  .  do  you  still  have  it  ?   green  is  your  colour  i  think  or  dark  blue  —  i’ll  get  back  to  you  on  that  .  ”  they  comment  ,  setting  their  drink  down  and  bringing  their  fingers  up  to  form  a  square  with  their  fingers  (  in  typical  artistic  fashion  )  ,  zooming  towards  and  away  from  him  before  letting  her  hands  collapse  onto  the  counter  .  “  so  ,  now  that  i  gave  you  advice  ,  it’s  only  fair  you  give  me  something  in  return  .  ”

          luke’s  had  been  particularly  quiet  that  afternoon  ,  sure  there  was  a  steady  stream  of  customers  (  there  always  was  )  but  he’d  found  enough  time  between  serving  to  actually  clean  for  once  .  the  notion  goes  out  the  window  however  once  he  spots  somin  outside  and  instead  he  refocuses  his  attention  on  making  a  head  start  on  her  usual  .  his  features  visibly  light  up  once  she  enters  and  he’s  quick  to  wave  her  over  .  “  before  you  say  anything  ,  i’m  way  ahead  of  you  —  strawberry  milkshake  is  shaking  ,  pancakes  are  on  the  way  and  whipped  cream  is  ready  to  go  .  all  that’s  left  is  the  hard  pick  of  where  you’re  going  to  sit  today  .  ”
