Identifying a Cockatrice

With how diverse hybrids can look on Mythcre, it is entirely possible for a bird-snake gryphon to closely resemble a Cockatrice. In order to identify whether or not the individual in question is in fact a Cockatrice, there are a few unique characteristics to look out for.

Some of a Cockatrice’s most recognizable characteristics are its wing-claws and ridge of stone above its eyes. They also usually have beak fangs, head crests, and a set of spines on their tails.

As an aside, while it is true that Cockatrices can cause petrification, it is never permanent. The actual duration of the affliction depends on the individual Cockatrice’s proficiency.

The Chroma Factions

Chroma are a rare subset of normal Mythcrean creatures, defined by their rainbow accents. If the main body of the creature is white, it is a Prism Chroma; for black, a Neon Chroma. Either Chroma can have the appearance of any animal, all that is necessary is the solid black or white, and the spectrum of accented color.

Children of Chromas will always result in another Chroma if both parents are Chroma, with the specific variation matching that of the parents. If the parents belong to different factions, it will be pure chance if the child will be Neon or Prism. Hybrid Chroma usually have the spectrum accents, but often have different colors for the main body.

The two factions are currently in opposition, fighting for territory in their ‘shared’ home: a large, secluded cove on the continent of Maliz. They are usually friendly to individuals not belonging to either faction, so long as they are neutral or aligned to the faction they are interacting with.

Hybrid Variations

There are many different ways a hybrid can look, even when it’s the same two creatures. The examples shown here are just a few of the possibilities when a bird and a snake form a hybrid. Any of the traits of either parent could pass down, from the coils, to the feathers, to the beak and legs. As long as the child has at least one trait from each parent, it can be considered a hybrid and has the potential to pass down any trait from either parent to its own offspring.

For example, the bottom right snake-bird could have a child with wings, despite not possessing wings itself.
