We are part of the movement that is Occupy Wall Street with ambitions to organize in El Paso. On September 17th, men and women of all races, backgrounds, political and religious beliefs, began to organize in nonviolent protest. These men and women represent the 99% with the goal of ending the greed and corruption of the wealthiest 1% of America. Occupy Wall Street is a leaderless resistance movement which began as a call to action for all Americans. With Occupy Wall Street as large as it has become, OccupyTogether has also grown in significance. OccupyElPaso is the El Paso branch of Occupy Wall Street and OccupyTogether.

The Progress of Today’s Meetings: The future of our movement is contingent on the course of action taken by the collective group. The City of El Paso has expressed a willingness to support our cause and has even expressed the idea of possibly providing us with an “indefinite” permit to occupy San Jacinto Plaza. An indefinite permit would facilitate the means for a peaceful demonstration that would have a long-term impact. The city’s help comes with a few sticking points that are blessings in disguise. The city is asking us to respect the hard-working individuals that have made Chalk the Block possible and allow them to have their function void of protesting, chanting, and sign holding. The people involved with Chalk the Block have spent months preparing for their event; hard-working artists have been waiting all year to display their work and small vendors are relying on the income. It would be a shame to intrude upon the efforts of these artists, children, and local vendors. That being said, the city has offered a compromise that gives us two areas on either side of the Chalk the Block (CTB) event where peaceful assemblies may be held during the CTB event. At noon on Monday the permit CTB has acquired will expire and City council will vote on our permit for an indefinite time which allows for camping-out overnight. This is a perfect opportunity to prepare for success!  Our movement is on the verge of creating a stronghold in the heart of El Paso’s financial district. It is imperative that we react to this delay in a positive manner. Having the city behind our movement can only prolong our occupation and allow us to be heard. Let’s use this time to educate the people and introduce them to our cause. Let’s go to CTB, support the artists and local vendors, and at the same time talk to as many people as we can about how corporate greed and political corruption affects them and why they should join us. If you read the local news you will see that most people don’t even know about our cause, what it is, what we want, and why we are out there. Let’s spend Saturday and Sunday talking to these people so that on Monday all of us can occupy El Paso. On Monday, the bankers and politicians will be downtown and so will we. Please come to the General Assembly on Thursday and participate in the democratic decision to occupy the San Jacinto Plaza beginning on Monday, October 17th. We cannot set ourselves up for failure. At this time, we are currently looking for a location to hold the legal training and the General Assembly on, at the latest, Thursday.

On Thursday, September 29th (Day 12) after coming back from our daily march throughout Wall Street. Cops entered the plaza once again in order to tell us to remove the tarps from the library section of the plaza.  It was still raining at this point, and they insisted that we remove them.  Most of us took our ponchos off, and recovered the books in order to prevent damage.
