TW: ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AND SUICIDE MENTIONED!!!! BEWARE!
2.0k words!
Ah, this seems like a good spot to dive...
Freminet stares into the clear water, watching the water ripple against his reflection. His dull, grey-blue eyes stare back at him, wearing the same bland expression. He shakes his head, clearing his mind as he holds his helmet up.
No time to think... just go.
Just as he’s about to slip into the water, a girl’s high-pitched voice gets his attention.
“Dazai-san, Kunikida-san’s going to be mad at us if we’re late!” The owner of the voice squeals.
She has pear-coloured hair reaching just below her shoulders, and distinct fuscia-pink eyes. An earring hangs from one ear as she tries to restrain an older man with chocolate-brown hair.
“But Collei-chan, it’s such a nice river!” Dazai, Freminet assumes, simply ignores the girl’s request and jumps into the river with a small splash.
“Dazai-san!” The girl calls out frantically, rushing to lean over the river on her knees. Her expression is panicked and looks like she wants to follow him in, but can’t. “Please don’t commit suicide!”
S-suicide..? Don’t tell me that guy is trying to drown on purpose!
I-I have to do something!
Taking a deep breath in, Freminet hastily shoves his helmet on, diving into the water. The green-haired girl watches him with wide eyes as he plunges into the frigid water.
“W-wait!” She exclaims just before the boy goes under.
The river is freezing, just like Freminet expected. Good thing he had already taken off his clothes and had his wetsuit underneath. He had left the house with the intention of going for a dive, so he made sure to wear his wetsuit underneath his clothes.
Icy cold water tingles Freminet’s fingers as he smoothly glides through the water, reaching the man who had jumped in. He has a peaceful expression, his fluffy brown hair spread all around him. The blond grabs the man above his waist, dragging him back up to the surface.
He heaves the soggy, waterlogged man onto the grass. The pink-eyed girl watches with wide eyes, leaning over her colleague.
“Dazai-san?!” The girl exclaims, watching as Freminet presses his palms against the man’s chest.
Dazai suddenly shoots up, coughing water. He gives Freminet a deadpan look, a disappointed frown on his lips.
“How disappointing,” he pouts, running a hand through his damp hair.
“Thank you so much for saving my co-worker,” the girl bows deeply. “A-apologizes for his... behavior.”
“I-I’m just glad he didn’t drown...” Freminet says sheepishly.
Dazai eyes the boy, looking him up and down.
“Are you a diver, by chance?” He inquires, noting his wetsuit.
“Oh, um, yes,” the blond boy nods. “I’m Freminet. Freminet Snezhevich.”
“What a mouthful,” Dazai commented.
“I-I suppose it is...” Freminet agrees quietly.
“Well, Freminet-kun, I am Osamu Dazai and this is Collei,” the man introduces himself and the other girl.
No last name? Odd...
“It’s nice to meet you, Freminet-san,” Collei smiles timidly. “P-please allow me to repay you for saving Dazai-san.”
“Oh, that isn’t necessary,” the boy shyly waves his hands in front of his face.
“C’mon Freminet-kun, let Collei-chan pay for dinner or something!” Dazai interjects, slinging an arm around the blond.
“W-well, if you insist...” He sighs, giving in.
“Woohoo! Let’s go!” Dazai cheers, pumping a fist into the air.
“I’m not paying, you realize, right?” Collei says in a blunt voice, frowning at her associate.
“Oof,” Dazai slumps glumly.
I hope Father won’t be mad that I stayed out for longer...

“So, Freminet-kun, you dive for a living?” Dazai asks curiously, slurping on some noodles.
Dazai had insisted on going to a ramen shop, though Collei wanted Freminet to choose. Freminet had politely turned her down, saying that he was fine with Dazai’s choice.
“Yes, I’m a professional diver,” Freminet nods.
“That sounds cool,” Collei pipes up.
“You seem young for a professional diver, though,” the brunette notes. “How old are you?”
Why do I feel like I’m being interrogated?
“Um, I’m eighteen,” he replies in a low voice.
“Oh, same age as Atsushi,” Dazai observes. “Collei-chan here is seventeen. I’m twenty-two!”
“You’re younger than I thought...” Freminet remarks quietly. “U-um, what do the two of you two do for work? If Collei-san does work...”
“Oh, we’re detectives,” Dazai explains, cutting Collei off as she was opening her mouth to say something. “I’m sure that you’ve heard of the Armed Detective Agency before, right?”
Lyney told me about them, I think. Something about a group of ability users who solve mysterious cases.
“I’ve heard of them before,” the boy nods. “S-so you have abilities?”
“Indeed we do!” Dazai exclaims cheerfully. “My ability is known as No Longer Human. It allows me to nullify other ability user’s gifts.”
“That sounds cool,” Freminet admits.
“And Collei-chan’s ability, Sprout of Rebirth, can summon a cat-like doll called Cuilein-Anbar! Cuilein-Anbar can be quite helpful when we’re working on cases.”
“I-it’s not as amazing as Dazai-san says it is...” Collei says, shyly looking down at her hands in her lap.
“Aw, have a little more confidence, Collei-chan!” Dazai grins.
“Y-yeah, it sounds incredible..!” The boy rapidly nods his head. “Sounds way more useful than my ability...” He adds under his breath.
“Hm? What’s that, Freminet-kun? You have an ability as well?” The brunette gawks at him, surprised at the sudden revelation.
“Huh?” Freminet stares back at him with wide eyes, realizing what he had just said. “O-oh, um, yes, I do.”
“Ohohoho, why didn’t you mention that sooner?!” The man cackles, standing up with both hands on his hips.
A few customers shoot angry and unamused looks at Dazai for making a ruckus. Collei reaches a hand out, but stops as she’s about to grab his coat sleeve. Her hand hesitates for a moment, then she quickly retracts it.
Hm..? Does Collei-san not like physical contact?
“Dazai-san, please sit down! I-I’ll have to tell Kunikida-san if we get in trouble..!” The green-haired girl hisses quietly, a worried expression on her face.
The man does not listen to Collei’s pleas, but instead points a finger at Freminet.
“Tell me about your ability, Freminet-kun!” Dazai exclaims brightly, slamming his hands onto the table, his hazel brown eyes sparkling with fascination.
“I, um...” The blond hesitates, his eyes darting around and landing on the table.
Should I tell him..? Will Father get mad at me?
He glances at Collei, who stares at him with an equally curious expression. She doesn’t say anything, only waits for his response.
W-well, they’re detectives, so I guess I can trust them...
“I-it’s called Moment of Waking and Resolve,” he mumbles sheepishly. “It allows me to control automatons and machines.”
“Waah! That sounds super useful!” Dazai squeals. “Y’know, Freminet-kun, you have the makings of a good detective! You should join the Armed Detective Agency!”
“What?!” Both Freminet and Collei shriek at the same time.
“D-Dazai-san, can you really just ask someone like that?!” Collei stammers, whispering as a concerned frown tugs at her lips. “I mean, what if Freminet-san doesn’t want to?!”
“Well, that’s why I’m asking him! To hear his opinion!” The brunette chuckles. “Whaddaya say, Freminet-kun?”
“Sorry, but... no thanks,” the boy humbly turns him down.
I... I could never turn my back on Lyney and Lynette and Father...
Dazai sighs, his shoulders slumping.
“I should’ve expected that,” he groans.
“S-sorry if he’s bugging you,” Collei mumbles. “He’s very... eccentric most of the time.”
“It’s fine,” Freminet assures her as they watch Dazai faceplant on the table.
“Awahhh... all I want is someone fun to work with! Kunikida-kun is so boring! Everyone is so boring!” The man wails.
“Please don’t throw a temper tantrum, Dazai-san... you’re a grown man... don’t act like Ranpo-san...” The lime-haired girl chastises, leaning over Dazai’s figure.
Dazai-san is very... interesting.
“I-I think I have to go now,” Freminet says. “Thank you for the meal, though.”
“Oh, n-no problem. Thank you for saving Dazai-san,” Collei smiles at the boy before turning back to Dazai. “Please Dazai-san, let’s just go.”
Freminet walks away, glancing at the pair one last time before leaving.

“We're back,” Collei announces with an exasperated sigh.
She had considered leaving Dazai at the ramen shop, but he quickly came to his senses and followed her back to the Agency. It's past evening, and the sun is starting to set, casting the office into a nice, orange light. Ranpo spins in his chair, munching on a chocolate bar like usual.
“Colleiii-chaaaan,” he calls out. “Did you get me any snacks?”
“Sorry Ranpo-san, but I didn't have any time,” she apologizes to the detective, politely bowing her head multiple times.
Collei has a lot of respect for Ranpo, as he is a master detective. Though his childish attitude can be quite annoying at times, she still views him like a brother - whether it being a younger or older brother, she still can't decide.
“Meh, it's fine,” he grumbles impassively. “By the way, Tighnari said he wanted to see you.”
This catches the girl's attention, and she glances at one of the doors. There are multiple rooms connected to the main office, a few being the conference room, the infirmary, and the president’s office. But Collei is looking at the office of Tighnari, another member of the Armed Detective Agency and her mentor.
It must be something important.. .
The girl glances at Dazai once more before walking towards the door furthest from where she's standing. She knocks on the door and waits for an answer.
“Ah, come in!” A voice calls out, slightly muffled.
She takes a deep breath in before turning the knob and slowly walking in.
The office is decorated with bright, lively green plants. Potted plants and flowers are everywhere, and they're in every nook and cranny. Tighnari is obsessed with the environment and wildlife, so it's only natural that his office is covered in nature. This is why he has his own office, as the other detectives don't really want plants all over. It's also humid in his office, and Collei can already feel herself starting to sweat.
“Tighnari-sensei?” She echoes. “Ranpo-san said you wanted to see me.”
“I'm over here, Collei-san!” Tighnari exclaims, a gloved hand waving at the girl from behind some plants.
Tighnari pops out from behind some of his precious potted plants, his hands dusting off his lab coat.
The man wears a white lab coat - which is now covered in dirt - and some rolled up grey trousers. His bluish-black hair is tinted with lime green, and is pulled into a small ponytail.
“Sorry, sorry, I was checking up on this pothos,” he says, holding up a pot with long, green leaves trailing out. “It wasn't doing too well last week, but it seems to be doing better now.”
He gently places down on the barely visible desk before turning back to Collei.
“So, I was out earlier today and I remember you had told me you needed some thread,” he continues. “I think it was for fixing some holes in Cuilein-Anbar. Anyways, I saw some but I didn't know which colour you needed, so I just bought them all!”
The plant enthusiast proudly holds up a case filled to the brim with thread, taking Collei back a bit.
“You didn't have to buy it, Tighnari-sensei,” she mutters. “Really, I could've gone out and bought it myself... but thank you.”
“Well, I only wanted to make things easier for you,” Tighnari smiles. “I know that working on a case with Dazai-san can be quite a hassle.”
“It's definitely a hassle,” Collei sighs.
“You look like you have something you want to talk about,” her mentor discerns.
“Mmm... I guess I do.”
“Tell me about it.”
Sighing again, Collei frowns.
“Dazai-san tried jumping in the river again,” she starts slowly. “A boy named Freminet saved him. We treated him to dinner as a thank you, and he told us that he has an ability. Dazai-san offered him a job at the Agency, which he turned down right away.”
“I see,” the man notes. “And your point is..?”
“It's odd,” she states. “I mean, Dazai-san invited him without hesitation. It just seems out of character for him.”
“Perhaps Dazai-san thought something was off about him,” he suggests. “Why don't you ask him about it?”

I cannot lie, Office! Phainon has been my obsession for the last couple of days. And I cannot lie this week has been a #notgood day so I cope with the only way I can. Ignorning my problems and thinking how life would be great if Phainon was here with me. All the love to my beloved @rhenuvee and @meltedcoco for being the only lads mad enough to indulge me in this hyper-specific AU of mine. Apologies for this being more me coded then usual, I really needed to scream about insurance.
Phainon thinks that you work too hard.
This isn't a new revelation; you have always been like this. From the moment the two of you started working together at this job, your calendar has been packed with to-do lists and events. You were always at the scene of the crime, from covering for colleagues on vacation to taking on extra projects. At first, it was your enthusiasm that kept you – so willing to learn everything while Phainon was struggling to keep his head above water.
The danger with enthusiasm is that it eventually turns into expectation, and constant high expectations are a road to self-destruction.
Phainon saw you over the next few months with bags under your eyes and hair falling from your scalp. You came in earlier than anyone and left well into the evening. Even on days when you were allowed to work from home, you would come into the office so that you could focus. Phainon could even count on one hand the number of times you did log out at 5:00 PM. Sometimes, he would see you online up until you fell asleep, only to repeat everything the next day.
His poor heart ached watching this department punish you for your fire and tenacity, yet rely on it all the same. He's come to admire you for more than your competence at work – you had a passion for this work that fueled his own motivation at his job. Beyond that, you were sharp and witty, with a kind heart under it all. Phainon adores how lively you spoke, both to him and to others.
(He didn't want to admit that his heart stuttered when you looked at him while he was speaking. Or how he purposefully unbuttoned his collar for the hope that your eyes would glance down at his chest. Phainon didn't want to believe that he fell in love with you, despite how obvious it was to everyone – but you.)
Phainon knew he had to check in on you when he heard you sniffle through the desk barrier. When he stood up – slowly to not startle you – he saw your head in your hands, shoulders shaking and shallow breathing. Your screen showed countless files and emails that he wouldn't even dare to try to decipher. Your sniffles turned into light sobs, hands furiously rubbing at your eyes to rid them of your tears.
"Hey…" he spoke quietly, walking around the barrier to see you. "There's no way insurance is something actually worth crying over."
"It is when every single broker acts like they're fucking stupid," you sneered, one of your classic defence mechanisms. If you can't get rid of your sadness, then at least you can mask it with your anger. "Seriously, how the fuck do you not know the fucking minimum standard we accept for your insurance? I feel like I'm going crazy with how many of the same conversations I'm having!"
It didn't help that you were told to cover for Castorice while she went on vacation back to her hometown of Styxia, not even given the option to decline. The poor girl had tried to clear up her portfolio as best she could, but there were always fires to be extinguished, and she was forced to hand over the hose to you, told to ignore the fact that you had your own fires to tend to.
Yet despite the amount of pressure on you, both external and self-inflicted, you would never ask for help. It was one of the very few things Phainon would change about you, if only to satisfy his desire to be your knight in shining armour.
Still, your stubbornness aside, Phainon was going to do whatever he could to take care of you, even if it was just patting your head as if you were a feral cat.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" Phainon asked softly, not wanting to worsen your headache. The hand on your head slowly dug its fingers into your hair, gently massaging your scalp. He could feel the relief radiate off of you, something he found great satisfaction in. Yet there was more for him to do.
"I don't want to bother you–" you started before Phainon interrupted your poor deflection of help.
"My inbox is cleared. All of my insurance has been updated or followed up with. The few payment changes I needed to do have been done or I'm waiting on approval." His hand slid from your hair to under your chin, lifting your face so that you could see your eyes. They were filled with exhausted tears, an engine with no fuel left to use and on the brink of breaking down. He wasn't going to let you or this place take you past the breaking point.
"...Could you take my pass and print some documents for me?" you mumbled, eyes shifting away from him. It looked like it pained you deeply to ask for help – and it probably did, but Phainon wasn't about to let you down, lest you return to your shell of burnout and hyperindividualism.
"Already on it!" Phainon swiped your pass from your desk, heading towards the printer like a man on a mission. In the moments where he waited for the old printer to come to life, Phainon thought about how dead you looked – from your appearance to your voice. He wasn't stupid nor naive to ignore how this job is taking more from you than it's giving back to you. He could feel the effects of this place too. His mother was concerned when she called one day, and he sounded short with her. The good farmer's boy who could never hurt a fly, all of a sudden snapping at his mother, was a sign that maybe this place was changing him for the worse.
Perhaps he should look into getting that promotion, or even transferring out of the department as a whole. He scoffed to himself, there was no way he was going to be promoted before you. And you deserved to be out of his place more than anyone.
Your head perked up as he walked back to your desk, eyes filled with gratitude and a smile on your lips. It wasn't your usual one, but it was the most he's seen from you in the last couple of weeks.
"Ugh, you're such an angel. I love you, Phainon," you groaned as the stack of paper fell onto your desk. His heart ached a slight bit hearing your casual confession. Oh, how desperately he wished for your love to be as deep and true as it was with him, but he knew it wasn't going to happen. You were so focused on your career, everything else, including your love life, was put on the wayside. Yet he will still always be here for you, no matter what.
"Anything for you, super star," he winked with a cheeky laugh. It was a nickname you earned from your coworkers in your first weeks here after they were impressed with your performance. He dares to wish that one day, he would be good enough to be in your star system.
(Maybe, your selfish heart hoped, that the more that you said your love for him out loud, that one day, it won't mean as much as you truly meant.)
