The thing that gets me is everyone shits on the fandom for loving Alec the most but it’s like, what other characters can we relate to? Not everyone is going to get attached to Clary because no one enters and adapts into a completely new way of life like that. Not Jace who’s a soldier, confident and cocky. Not Izzy who’s confident in how she looks and knows it. Not Magnus who’s god damn immortal. Not Simon who’s turning into a ‘monster’. Not Luke who’s experienced the privilege of shadowhunter life to have it ripped away. But Alec? Alec is the one who can’t bear to let anyone down. The one who constantly strives for perfection not only for personal reasons but also to please everyone around him. Who feels pressured by the society he’s living in. The constant need to be and do better. That’s something that the audience of the show relates to. Why? because we’re mostly students or young adults. Struggling to achieve the bear minimum required of us to pass our grades or simply function in the adult world. That’s why people love Alec. Not because he’s gay. Because he’s god damn human.

I do agree with your notion that not everyone can relate to every character, but you are literally scratching the surfaces for each and every single character, except for Alec.

Clary - Losing a parent and fighting back against a world that keeps telling her who and what she should be.

Jace - An abuse survivor who has a hard time expressing his feelings, but cares deeply for those he loves. He is trying to figure out where he comes from and who he is.

Izzy - Although she is confident, she still has an overbearing mother who reminds her all the time that she will never be enough, unless she changes who she is.

Simon - Unsure of his place in this new world he has been forced into. Always the optimistic, but is still lonely.

Luke - Betrayed by the one person that is suppose to support and love him for life, ostracized by his family and society he was raised up in. Loved and help raise the daughter of the man who tried to kill him.

Magnus - Damage perception of his parentage, is always being called upon to help others who probably wouldn’t help him if he were in trouble. People have misconception of him because of the life he lives and what he looks like. He’s bisexual. That alone is something that any bisexual person can relate to. 

However, I agree with you that not everyone can relate to all the characters, but there is something in each and every character on this show that someone can relate to. Alec, isn’t the only one.
