“The thing is, the song wasn't scripted. We'd rehearsed the scene as it was, then when the cameras were setting up, Rosie was noodling around on the piano (just for fun) then she started to sing this most beautiful song, which I now know to be 'A Case Of You' by Joni Mitchell. It was mesmerising.
As I say, it wasn't scripted, but it fitted the mood of the scene so perfectly that we decided to film it, not knowing whether we'd be able to use it or not. Joni Mitchell very rarely gives permission for her work to be used like this, so we wrote to her and explained the story... and she gave us the thumbs up. Can you believe it? We felt very honoured and very lucky and very grateful. It's a breath-taking moment, and I think it's the most extraordinary thing l've ever had the privilege of being part of shooting.”
