This was made partially as a response to an anti-heroes collage I recently saw. For one thing, I objected to a list that featured real-life scumbags like Jordan Belfort and Al Capone as ‘lovable’- and I say that as somebody who loved DiCaprio’s performance as Belfort as an infantilized, entitled demented Jerry Lewis crossed as Alex DeLarge figure. Secondly, there are so much more interesting performances by DeNiro that can be described as anti-heroes than his glorified cameo in The Untouchables. They’re not lovable- they are interesting and complicated people that stretch from naturalistic to the extreme.
