Emma Hewitt has had quite a year so far, and all of her triumph is only the precursor to what will probably be what defines this Australian vocalist as a legend in contemporary vocal trance. A frequent guest on Cosmic Gate’s Wake Your Mind tour, Hewitt is on the verge of releasing her debut solo album Burn the Sky Down on Armada Music. This release features two different discs- the more ambient side features production from rock producer Lee Groves who’s past credits include Depeche Mode, Gwen Stefani, and Marilyn Manson. The other side caters to EDM, featuring remixes of every song in the first side. This includes the highly successful club mixes of Colours by Armin van Buuren and Cosmic Gate as well as Shogun’s remix of Miss You Paradise. Check out the beautiful video for this single here:
I am more than excited for this album to drop on May 18. This will mark a milestone for not only the subgenre of vocal trance, but for the crossover of vocalists into EDM as a whole. With producers layering vocals over their songs (a process of trial and error for some), more singers are seeing the rise in electronic music’s popularity and jumping on board to help the rise of it’s success. All in all, we should be very stoked for the future.
As a little bonus treat, I'm including Emma Hewitt's 15 minute performance at ASOT 550 Den Bosch, in which she sings all of her most famous tracks AND covers a certain monumental song by my favorite british trance trio. ;]

Sub Focus ft. Alice Gold - Out The Blue (The Remixes)
Out The Blue, the latest from Sub Focus, is one of my favorite singles of the year thus far. Drum & Bass is a genre capable at times of inducing euphoria surpassing, in my opinion, even trance (controversial I know) especially when it comes in combination with good songwriting; Out The Blue is a perfect example.
Sub Focus is the stage name of Nick Douwma, a British EDM producer specializing primarily in DNB. The genre is characterized by high-speed breakbeats over heavy basslines- it's creative, energetic, and strangely beautiful; if you haven't given DNB a fair chance you're seriously missing out. Sub Focus is an excellent place to start.
Though the track's been around for a while (in blog time, anyway), the official release of the remixes came just yesterday. Laidback Luke gives signature big-room house flair to his version, Xilent takes on the requisite dubstep remix, and finally XXXY drops a super-funky, plucky, slow bassline in what I found to be a delicious surprise.
Seriously, though the original mix is on the verge of cracking the top 25 in my iTunes, no small feat in five weeks.

Starkillers, Dmitry KO & Richard Beynon - Keep Pushing
Starkillers (aka Las Vegas native Nick Terranova) is back with his signature ultra-high energy style on his latest track Keep Pushing, a collaboration with Dutchman Dmitry KO and Montreal's Richard Beynon released today on Spinnin' Records. Keep Pushing may have a filthy, addictive bassline, but it's vocals feel like something straight off a soul track. The combination keeps the tune from falling into the generic electro-house swarm.
Terranova's been putting out excellent work lately; I was particularly impressed with the club mix of Deadmau5's R-Rated collaboration with Melleefresh Hey Baby released in collaboration with KO several days ago. I'm a big fan of recent release Light It Up as well, and the exotic Don't Hold Back is undeniably catchy. If you needed some party tracks in your week, here they are.... no need to take my word for it though, stream & download. Meow.

If his awesome Mohawk and banging remixes haven't captured your fancy yet, Albin Myers is sure to catch your attention with his debut EP Hells Bells released today on Dim Mak Records. This EP features 3 electro house originals with crunchy bass lines and progressive-like melodies that are sure to float your boat. Myers also included 1 drumstep remix that may have you searching other genres for new music, yes, it's that catchy. While you're at it, check out his most recent release Bumbaclot put out on Myback's (aka Albin Myers' collaboration with John Dahlback) imprint Mutants. Enjoy!
Flux Pavilion ft. Example - Daydreamer (The Remixes)
UK dubstep wizard Josua Steele (Flux Pavilion)'s collaboration with Elliot Gleave (Example) Daydreamer is a magical track. I'm usually averse to male vocals but something about Example's British accent does me in, not to mention its synergetic combination with Flux Pavilion's wicked drops. It seems the daydream doesn't end at the original mix though, as three artists take on the track in a much anticipated remixes EP released May 1st in the UK (preorder it HERE)
This is one of the best remix sets I've heard in a looong, long time. Dillon Francis skillfully incorporates his signature downtempo moombah vibe, while Danny Byrd brings the piece up to a rapid Drum'n'Bass level. Dubstep, moombah, DnB...it's like my birthday came early. In every sense of the phrase.
If you read anything in this whole post, though, let it be this: The Jack Beats remix of Daydreamer is f$%k!ng NUTS. I would explain but I just can't. Listen to it, listen to it, listen to it, listen to it. This is not a test. You're welcome.
Sonny Moore may be a controversial figure but it's hard to deny the appeal of the latest glitchy collaboration between Moore and fellow Los Angeles native John Dadzie, perhaps better known as 12th planet. The two have done major work together before, most recently in a collaboration with Kill the Noise on the seriously overlooked track Burst. More famously, the same trio teamed up to produce Right On Time, which happens to be my favorite track off Skrillex's late 2011 EP Bangarang. I'm including the collabs below as well as a live rip of a VIP mix of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites that's been floating around under the name of Lick It Down (though I can't say that's the final title). In any case, Let's Get Down is an inescapably catchy piece of melodic dubstep. I know that face people make when they see Skrillex's name on a track these days and I'm down with hipsters I guess but please- don't cut off your nose to spite your face. Wub you all, happy Sunday!

Dash Berlin has become synonymous with innovation across the board. It's one thing to form a trio of two musically talented producers and a DJ who creates mashups so well done that they are demanded by fans to be released as their own tracks. It is another to make history by being one of the first artists(possibly the first artist if hipsters have not gotten around to it) to make an album title a hashtag. I am happy to report that the Dutchmen known as Jeffrey Sutorius, Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn have created yet another masterpiece with a Twitter fan inspired title, #musicislife.
This collection of songs predominately includes vocal trance tracks, featuring a variety of vocalists both male and female. Emma Hewitt, a former Rock singer/songwriter who has gained enough buzz to find a permanent home in the EDM world, is featured twice. Disarm Yourself is an old but very successful single that shows off Hewitt's enchanting voice, and Like Spinning Plates(a newer collaboration) is beautifully written and produced, featuring a haunting piano riff combined with the futuristic groove that the Dash Berlin sound is known for. Jeffery also features Man on the Skyfire, the latest of his famous Dashups that crowds and listeners everywhere fell in love with during his ASOT 550 sets in Moscow and Miami, as a bonus track on the album. An unexpected treat is Aviation, a song that takes listeners back to the old style of energetic trance. All in all, #musicislife has something for everyone looking for good melodic EDM.
From the looks of things, the future of music has finally arrived. Cheers.

I heard this blasting from someone's apartment as I was walking down the street. Literally stopped in my tracks, overwhelmed with anxiety because I knew I didn't have it in my iTunes and I was afraid I'd never find it (although I know I must know it; surprised Nero didn't play it when I saw them at Nokia last week). Luckily, I remembered the words, found it, and on top of that found another remix by Netsky. So, to whoever was blasting this on Midvale Avenue tonight, thanks. And if you already have this because it's old sorrrrrryyyy...JK not sorry.

There's nothing I enjoy more than music that's accessible on the dance floor as well as on the couch, and The M Machine's new EP Metropolis Pt. 1 provides its listeners with both. The M Machine is a group of three San Francisco natives that've been throwing down beats for some time- they even housed Sonny Moore when in their warehouse back when he couldn't afford a place to stay while touring. Sonny has signed the trio to his label OWSLA for their latest release; not only was it was a nice way for the Grammy winning bass head to repay them, but I think the EDM world can be glad that he made that decision as well.
Metropolis, Pt. 1 is exactly what the name suggests; it is the first half of the M Machine's full debut album. Could have fooled me- this release stands on it's own and takes the listener to a completely different world with each song. Black is the hardest track, giving us rager types the brute bass and bangin' beat we need to get our party on. A King Alone is almost the polar opposite of, providing a light melody with a soothing and resonant vocals. I'm a sucker for artists re-coloring their own songs, so my personal favorite track on the album is Shadow of a Rose Garden, a Dubstep take of the M Machine's earlier single Promise Me a Rose Garden that still manages to keep the trio's signature musical integrity. Trust me, once you get a taste of this EP you'll want to give each song another listen (or five).
Needless to say this release makes me real proud to be a Californian.
Given Ryan Raddon (aka Kaskade)'s efforts to keep his Ultra set under wraps, I was surprised to see him give away the full HQ of his Coachella set on SoundCloud. Nonetheless, I'm thrilled! Kaskade shows off his legendary mash-up skill in the beautiful, energetic 90-minute set. My guess is that Kaskade's UMF set more closely resembles his upcoming Freaks of Nature tour; it'll be hitting the United States this summer (www.freaksofnaturetour.com). If you're a Californian, be ready with your credit card to purchase tickets THIS Friday at 10AM - ticket acquisition is no joke, yesterday during presales Wanttickets crashed. Despite the server troubles, tickets for SF and LA sold out in a matter of hours (after jumping to $85 nonetheless!). Good luck & enjoy!!

You may remember Hypster from his Beatport top 10 domination about a year ago with the release of his EP The Neon Uprising. Since then he has gained support from heavy hitters such as Tiesto, Robbie Rivera, Moguai and Miles Dyson. The Uprising was even nominated for Best Electro House Track of The Year in the 2012 Beatport Music Awards. Neon Teens gained my respect as one of the best electro tracks of 2011.
This Monday, Hypster's new LP entitled Hypsterical was released on Plasmapool, following a delay from the original release date set for April 16th. The date was postponed one week when he decided to add one more track to the album. This 8 track album gives you a taste of his dirty electro house sound and 3 hard hitting dubstep tracks. Being born on the musical island of Ibiza, it’s clear to me why this young producer is a natural-born l talent. I promise you won’t be disappointed, check it out!

[Preview] Sébastien Tellier - Cochon Ville (Brodinski Remix)
French electronica veteran Sébastien Tellier released his latest album entitled My God Is Blue last week with independent label Record Makers. As with Tellier's previous studio album Sexuality it seems the album will be heavily remixed by some big names. The Magician has already created an excellent take on Cochon Ville, but I'm most excited for ultra-talented French electro producer Brodinski's version; he's previewed it his SoundCloud noting only that the track will be out "soon". I've included the original Tellier track below, The Magician's remix, some other amazing remix work by Brodinski (when I say amazing, I mean it!), and a few other well-known Tellier remixes below (Boyz Noize anyone?!).
Though I mess around with other EDM genres, electrofunk, my heart is yours. J'adore. "Prosterne-toi. Danse."

Deadmau5, the Canadian progressive house producer whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, has brought beauty and inspiration to his newest track the Veldt. The piece was based on a short story (read it here); Zimmerman stumbled upon the lyricist/vocalist by random luck (from Deadmau5's tumblr):
"However, the electronic music community needs more people like Chris James, who i actually just randomly stumbled on via twitter, pretty insane.
he had posted a link claiming he did a vocal to the track ive uploaded on soundclud, ill be honest, i *do* check demos out from time to time… but not nearly as often as they come in… for whatever reason, i took a shot and checked it out… i was fucking nearly in tears. Not because i think he’s the best singer in the world… but because HE FUCKING GOT IT. TOTALLY and COMPLETELY got it." (from Deadmau5's tumblr)
Though the Veldt wasn't a track that had me swooning at first listen, it's grown on me significantly since then to the point where I've fallen in love. Check out the radio edit below (extended mix will be coming soon), as well as some other assorted work from the Mau5. Meow.
Half Czech, half Slovak duo SHato & Paul Rockseek are a hidden treasure. Their Soundcloud page left me astonished. Not only are their original productions are wonders in themselves, but their bootlegs are bold undertakings. From mashing up a well known Justice vocal sample with Arty and Mat Zo to taking on a classic Depeche Mode song (and succeeding) this new trance duo goes big or goes home. They've also done an edit of a song by Counting Crows that I listened to constantly back before I even really knew what raves were. That's usually a good sign.
When I say these guys are a hidden treasure, it's true that I could be wrong at any second. There is little focus on these two right now, but their productions still managed to gain airwave support from Above & Beyond in September of last year, as well as more recent support in live sets by Arty, Cosmic Gate, and Sied Van Riel. Their Depeche Mode bootleg was just played by Kyau & Albert on a Trance Around the World guest mix.
When we talk about artists blowing up, I'm gonna risk a bad pun and say these two are a time bomb. But like most time bombs, only time will tell.
