what in god’s fuckin name was the logic behind the film franchise giving peeta so many of katniss’ characteristics... why did they push this narrative that katniss is selfish (they are) at the EXPENSE of making peeta seems like he has the perspective on just how cruel the games truly are. there is such a distinct difference between living a life of total comfort whilst suffering parental abuse and living a life of abject poverty, and that is SO important in understanding the dynamic of being a tribute in the games, especially in katniss’ case. i try my best to highlight katniss’ selfish, chaotic and even downright destructive behavior in my portrayal, but i’ve always done so while acknowledging that it’s always a result of their love for prim. katniss had no intention of sparking a rebellion when they volunteered for prim, nor when they dressed rue’s body and gave the d12 salute and frankly, not even when they suggested suicide by berry with peeta. their intention in the 74th hunger games was to survive, but the temper that got them out alive is the same one that, unintentionally, incited a war.

my issue with the portrayal of katniss in the films is that they skimp out on prim’s importance throughout their decisions. while film katniss seems to be wholly indifferent towards the capitol throughout the first two movies, and only grasps the inhumane tactics used by the government AFTER witnessing the uprisings during the victory tour and the bombings in district 8, book katniss has a very different perspective; experiencing a lifetime of poverty and seeing how starvation affects the poor and largely children, katniss is already aware of the immoral habits of the capitol, especially surrounding the games. they already have an acute understanding of what’s going on in the districts, so while the victory tour and the uprisings are absolutely traumatizing to witness upfront, they aren’t unexpected.

the glaring difference between the adaptations is that katniss’ selfishness is not out of obliviousness, it’s out of love. before the reaping, their entire monologue revolves around the unfairness of the games and their district reflects that when they salute them in silence after they’ve volunteered. they aren’t indifferent towards the capitol before the games, they’re fucking furious and that manifests itself in the decision to show dissent after rue dies, to only side with peeta when it’s convenient, to disavow the games by attempting suicide; it’s all that pent up anger that ultimately gets them home, but it’s at the expense of starting the rebellion, and in turn, indebts them to snow to try and stifle it.

to ignore that katniss’ environment, upbringing and exceptional understanding of the way the games operate is influential to the way the story pans out is ignorant!!!!!!! giving peeta the understanding of the capitol’s culture under the guise of him being “observant uwu” while giving katniss the indifferent obliviousness is such a fucking disservice to the entire series. but that’s what you get when you cheapen the story of an indigenous-coded protagonist fighting a fascist regime to a whitewashed fuckfest of bad oneliners and shoddy hair dye.

katniss everdeen had every right in the goddamn world to vote yes for a capitol kids hunger games and it is 100% in character for them to do so in memory of prim because katniss has ALWAYS made selfish and destructive decisions in prim’s name. in this essay i will-

on one hand, i will Never be able to forgive suzanne for giving such little background info on how america collapses into panem and what happens to the rest of the world, but on the other i understand that everything she DID leave out of the series’ background was intentional to explicitly focus on the root theme of the series without directing attention to lesser important details. don’t get me wrong... i’m thankful she just took her money n went into obscurity for the decade after unlike the goblin queen that won’t shut the FUCK up about her comparitively subpar series

but also... are we talking nuclear warfare that destroyed a portion of the worldwide human population? and is THAT why d13’s ulterior trade is nuclear weaponry? does that mean that there’s potentially a larger population of people in america that WEREN’T corralled into panem? are they diseased like ghouls in fallout from residual radiation or are they just fugitives OF panem for not assimilating? could there be post-apocalyptic settlements of non-panesh people throughout america? did america just nuke itself as a ploy to CREATE panem and say that foreign governments pulled the plug on world peace AND do we have a handmaid’s tale situation where other countries and their equally corrupt governments know about the self-sabotage and spread the capitol’s propaganda to their own nations??????
