He still couldn’t see her, which was very unsettling. His eyes rested on the shadow, uncertainly. “Most creatures who feel the need to hide themselves turn out to be my enemies.” The statement was very matter of fact. He could count on one hand the number of pleasant invisible encounters he’d had.
“How can you know me? I’ve never been here before.”
A sigh escaped her as she floated around to rest on his shoulder, leaning her back against his head, and her legs dangled to his side. “It’s complicated,” she said exasperatedly. “I could reveal myself, but... we’re in public! It would be very embarassing. So I’ll remain a shadow for now.” She shrugged before giggling again. “Besides, that’s more exciting isn’t it?”
Midna casually crossed one leg over the other. “And I know you Link, because... our fate is intertwined. I’ve met you. Maybe not exactly you---but I’ve met you before. You’re the same. The same spirit.” She smiled and it could be heard in her tone.
timefated:
As he walked, Link gradually felt a strange chill – almost like he wasn’t alone – but he couldn’t see anything odd nearby. Yet after so many years he’d learned to trust his instinct, even if it was all he had to go on. He continued towards the castle on high alert, ready to respond to the slightest confirmation of being watched.
What he wasn’t expecting was to hear his own name softly in his ear. The quiet word made him whirl around, hand immediately resting on his sword hilt, but not drawing it just yet. “Who are you?” he asked, more of a demand – and it was then that he noticed his shadow, the odd shape that appeared to be perching on his shoulder.
The emotions that overwhelmed her upon hearing his voice. This was almost identical! She smiled, and floated around him, her shadow a bit more pronounced. “Oh, scary! But I’m not your enemy--so no need to go pulling your blade out on a mere shadow!”
“Ee hee hee!” she giggled, her singular eye fixated upon the young knight. He was almost as impulsive as she’d expected. Of course he was. “Hello, Link. I am Midna. You may not know me, but I know a little about you!”

There was a reason Link hardly used the Ocarina of Time anymore. It seemed that any time he thought he could control its time bending effects, the goddesses intervened to keep him in his place. Which is why, when the last notes of the Song of Time faded… nothing happened.
Except something had happened. He could see Castle Town nearby, and it appeared to have expanded. A lot. The castle itself looked slightly altered as well, as though time had worn it down and parts had been rebuilt.
Baffled, he tucked the ocarina away and began walking towards the town. The goddesses must have sent him here for a reason – and even if he didn’t like it, he should try to figure out what it was.
The all too familiar green of the tunic is what threw her off. How many young men in this realm wore green like that?! With the same style hat and everything? It was unnerving. This one looked almost like he could be related to Link... Midna watched him with a close eye as he walked through the field towards Hyrule Castle. She looked at the spot that Link had been before he was transported to whatever realm the Golden Wolf resided. The land between the living and the dead? Whatever.
Midna decided to investigate this lookalike. He even carried a sword and shield in almost the exact same manner. Wore leather boots that went up mid-shin. She could not count all the similarities on her two impish hands. Curiously she followed him, entering his shadow, which was so familiar. So close to the real thing. She resided in his shadow, and even sat there, upon his shoulder--he wouldn’t be able to see her. Not unless she decided to emerge from the shadows... or he happened to notice the strange addition to his own shadow.
And then she saw his eyes.
His eyes were shaped almost the exact same way. They were proud. Filled with a courage that many other Hylians lacked. The hue was the same cerulean colour as the one she was most familiar with. Just who was this guy? A twin?
She felt like she had to do something. Say something. Perhaps try... try and call for him.
“Link...?” she said softly, her tone uncertain, in his ear.

a coronation to be held felt so sudden, though most expected it. the kingdom still felt so heavy, pressed under the weight of all the odd things that had happened with the castle — its princess particularly — and the monsters that trailed blood through hyrule’s bright green fields. a weight that octavo, too, had been crushed beneath — but it was time to sift out the past and focus on the now. the crowning of a new queen was a huge deal — and it was his duty to provide the appropriate ambiance for the event. a lot of… pressure. but, he hadn’t claimed his spot within the court for no reason. amid the rush of those repairing the ruined structures of the castle and the sound of swallows in the eaves, octavo nestled himself in the sill of a large, painted window as he dutifully composed; something regal, yet gentle — something that would sound written personally for the soon - to - be - queen. rather, as personal as octavo could feasibly get with such limited conversation with her. although he imagined she was incredibly busy and found it hard to spare the time for him, it did serve to be just a bit frustrating in his creative process. he played through what he had already written down, smooth and wouldn’t stop until he had reached the next part to need rendering — or, until he heard feet against the castle tile, growing nearer towards him. lazily, octavo spared a glance up, his music trailing off as he saw who had been his audience; a rather… odd looking woman. not that he had any room to talk, honestly. daylight clung to her as if it were something foreign on her body. a curious - looking woman, to be sure. he tilted his head, bright yellow eyes blinking as he seemed to regard her. “good afternoon, you don’t seem like one of the contractors,” he said lightly, “or even like you are from these parts at all.” he did offer her a grin. “i’m always open for requests, if you are keen.”
Midna arched her eyebrows with surprise and interest, not quite sure what to reply with. She smiled, chuckling nervously. “Ah, forgive me,” she said, surprised at her own politeness--it had been so long since she’d spoken to anyone with formality, she was certain she’d lost the skill. But it came back to her like second nature. “You’re quite correct, I’m not from around here. I’m not familiar with the music you play, or the music of the region for that matter.”
Clasping her hands together at her waist, she gazed down at the young man with a thoughtful expression. “What was that you were playing?” she inquired. “It was lovely.”

Majora didn’t like feeling mocked, but in his weakened state he had to suffer some indignities to his statute. He’d remember her, though. Perhaps he’d actually make the hex something to be afraid of, when he found he had the power again. Or maybe he’d take over this ‘Twilight Realm’ and make her a wanted criminal. That could be fun too.
“I could care less about the sun above,” he replied, “it makes no difference to one of my abilities, as it apparently does to one of yours.”
“Although now that you say it, I’ve always had a strong affinity for the moon…”
“Hah!” she barked a laugh, the sound was sudden, like a clap. This guy just had to attempt to one-up her, didn’t he? But at least it was now obvious he knew nothing about the Twilight, and perhaps wasn’t one of Zant’s minions. “You assume a lot,” she said, her mouth twisted back into that signature grin of hers. “And brag. You’ve probably got a pretty big hubris, don’t you?” She hung in the air, looking at her fingers, though small as they were with feigned interest. “Hubris usually results in someone’s downfall, like someone else I know...” As it was for Zant... and consequently her. She underestimated Zant. But it would not happen again.
“Tell you what,” she adds, finally, after pondering something. “I’ll be nice and answer whatever question you want a bit more seriously. But first you have to take that mask off.” She smirked. That mask felt a little uncomfortable to look at, and she just wanted to see what this person looked like without it. “At least for a second. Just so I can see who it is I’m speaking to!”
wolfvirago:
Ah, but that was where the stranger was wrong. Robin was no traveler to the woods, no, she was their child. She had been a part of Faron ever since she took her first breath; and now, she was going through it in search of danger, wanting to purge it of monsters.
“Funny, I’m looking for monsters.” Robin responded, not getting her sword and shield yet, but preparing to. Her hands flexed at the tiniest movements, lupine senses bared to try and seek out the shadow.
“It’s kind of my job to keep this place safe. So you should probably find shelter too, ya know.” Her voice was gentle, even when facing a possible enemy. It had been engrained in her to be kind to the creatures of Hyrule, especially since they might need her aid, as most seemed to when her bloodline rolled along.
“Oho, so brave!” Midna said, gleefully, her form completely hidden amongst the shadows of the trees. Her voice came from another direction. “It’s too bad your bravery is wasted here. I don’t need protection from monsters.”
Her grinning face rose from the shadow of one of the several oaks that lined the road, a singular red eye visible, fixated on the strange ‘protector’. “You’re in a lot of danger, you know. Whether you know it or not. Ee hee hee!”
Midna grew up with no contact with Hyrule, no way to visualize its people, and no humanization of them–they were the evil that brought her people to this half-life, to ruin, and she loathed them, but in the way one loathes someone they will never have the chance to meet.
When Zant usurps her throne, curses and casts her out and begins his invasion of the Light World, Midna sees Hyrule as a new resource, a place to hide while she makes her plan. She sees its people equally–Link is turned into a beast before her eyes and she gleefully regards him as the pawn destiny has given her. She generalizes about them (calling Link “useless”, saying his people are “idiots”, things they create look “cheap”), dehumanizes them, treats Link as a slave.
It’s important that this is where Midna begins.

“E-excuse me!! You!! Yes, you!!” In a frantic attempt, he would wave the small imp down.
“Have you.. oh, geez…. seen a little white bird… thing around here?!” His arms moved to imitate that of a bird flapping its wings.
Midna looked over in surprise towards the stranger, and she tilted her head. “A white bird...” she repeated, rubbing her chin, thoughtfully. “Mmm... nope! Sorry.” She shrugged her shoulders apologetically. But the imp paused, getting a better look at the little man. He certainly looked familiar... “But... if you need help finding it, maybe I cooooould help.” she adds with a casually playful tone.
“...for five hundred rupees!” She said. Of course, it was a joke. She would help him anyways.
“Twilight, again; another ending. No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end.”

@of-twilight. / call.
the life of a hero is one full of excitement and danger, clashes with monsters three times the size of buildings, and standoffs against the greatest evil hyrule has known in recent years. but there’s also a lot more downtime than the ordinary hyrulean might expect — hyrule is not a small country, at least not to link’s limited sense of scale, and night often falls in the middle of his travels, forcing him to stop and take shelter until morning.
now is one such instance. he’s tucked himself and the woman in his shadow away under a small, rocky overhang a little ways away from the beaten path so bulblins won’t find them.
“ hey, midna, ” he speaks softly into the dusky air, concerned as ever for all those around him. “ how’re you holdin’ up ? ”
The imp emerged slowly from Link’s shadow, her form a transparent darkness. Midna rose out of the floor to eye level with the Hylian. He hadn’t needed to worry about her at all. It’s not like she really cared about him--he was just another person in this realm that she could not bear to be in. Another selfish person of the realm of light.
“I’m fine,” Midna stated coolly, her small arms folding over her chest. “You don’t have to worry about me. Even if you died a horrible death...” she squinted with a sly grin spreading over her abnormally large mouth. A singular fang poked its way over her bottom lip. “I’d still be fine.” It was a half-truth.
“The real important thing is that you’re okay,” she said, casually leaning to one side. “It would be pretty inconvenient if I was left in the realm of light without a shadow to hide in. And it would be a slim chance to find someone brave enough to go get the Fused Shadows for me.” She shrugged her little shoulders, giggling. “Ee hee hee!”

Kafei is hiding on the deck on the roof of the Stock Pot Inn. He is not hiding to get out of work, as can be seen by the basket he brought with him, full of clothes that need mending. No, he’s hiding to get away from Anju’s mother. She picked today to work through some strong emotions, possibly on other people.
It’s a beautiful day in late spring, with a deep blue sky, puffy clouds, and a light breeze. Termina Field isn’t visible past the town’s protective walls, but there’s an unmistakable scent of wild grass and possibility that mingles with the the town’s usual stamp on the senses. Kafei didn’t wake up this morning expecting to spend a large part of today on the deck, but he’s enjoying it. He’s sewing a button back onto one of Anju’s grandmother’s shirts, and his mind is completely elsewhere, lost in thoughts of a book he’s been reading.
Kafei is fascinated with history, and he was very lucky to buy a book of poetry dating back to Ikana and the Old World, from a traveler who came to the inn a few weeks ago. His favorite poem so far has been about the legend behind the Sun Mask and the Moon Mask, those masks that engaged couples so often replicate for their wedding ceremonies. According to the story, a strange woman appeared in a town in Old World Ikana one evening, at twilight. She asked around desperately for help. She claimed to be from another world, but more importantly, she spoke of a true love in her homeland who she’d become separated from. There are different versions of the story, and it’s impossible to know what really happened. In some versions, she finds her way home. In other versions, she remains separated from her love forever. But the event (if there was any truth to it at all) inspired a conversation about love and loyalty that has stood, and continues to stand, the test of time.
Since Kafei is outside, he’s the first to see a strange traveler make her way towards the inn. A lot of the town’s newcomers end up there, and he’s seen a lot of different folk in the months since he moved in with his own true love. He’s never seen a floating imp with fiery red hair before. He’s curious, but he doesn’t need to stare. He can ask Anju about the visitor later. She’s probably at the desk now.
What a strange place Midna found herself in. She noted the giant clock with the tower, and the strange people that inhabited the town. There was life here, which was both very similar and very different than her own peoples’ city at home, in the Twilight Realm. The only difference was that this place wasn’t covered in perpetual twilight, of course... and that was odd to Midna because she wasn’t burning away here. Not like she probably would have if she entered the Realm of Light parallel to her home, which was very holy to the golden goddesses that created it. No... she felt fine here, which was almost like the Hyrule that she was pulled into just prior to all of this. The sun was even blazing overhead. It was warm...
Midna hummed as she floated along. Maybe she should find somewhere to stay? She figured it might be a while before she was able to figure out a way to return home... And she wasn’t sure how she’d even gotten here. She had entered a portal created by Lana to teleport somewhere--and now she was here.
She snorted derisively as she approached what looked like an inn of sorts--the “Stock Pot Inn”... whatever a stock pot was. Midna approached a door and her hair extended, like a long arm, and pushed at the door--oh right. These also had those... what were they? ‘Knobs.' She twisted the knob on the door and pushed it open.
“Hello?” Midna called as she entered the inn. “Can I stay here? Inns are for staying aren’t they?” She folded her arms over her chest, huffing. She’d never needed to ask to stay at an inn in her life! She was a princess! Eventually a nice lady came along and helped her out... she had to fork over rupees! Well, it’s a good thing Midna had saved all of the ones she’d gotten fighting alongside the Hyrule Warriors. She was given a fairly small room with a single bed, but Midna didn’t feel like sleeping just yet. She wanted to wander about.
“I can leave and come back, can’t I?” she had asked, and the innkeeper had amusedly nodded with a smile. Midna whisked off out the door again, and glided skyward before settling gently on the large building that appeared like a humongous chest--like the ones you’d find in temples with various treasures inside. She hummed softly, wondering where she went wrong with the portal. It would be wise to work from there before attempting to find her way back to where she’d be able to get her normal form back! She was certain this wasn’t even in the same realm.
@wolfvirago liked for a starter!
Under the guise of a shadow, Midna glided through the evening air without effort. She hummed a gentle tune, though whimsical in nature. If there ever was a nicer time in this realm of light, it was during the darkest hours, when all the denizens were settling down to sleep. Midna could reveal herself then, as long as it was dark enough. Too much light, and she would burn away. How long had she been here? It was hard to say. It had felt like ages since she’d left the Twilight Realm...
A presence snapped Midna’s attention to alert, and she ceased her humming, instead making eliciting a sound of curiosity. A traveler? At this time of night? She spotted the stranger and stealthily moved through the shadows, getting closer in order to investigate. Curious. Nobody usually wandered about on their own like that. Maybe she should let her existence be known?
“It’s not safe in the forest...” she called out, her voice echoing about the glade around them. “You might run into a monster... Ee hee hee!”
