By the time the other dragon returned the blue scales had spread from Levi’s hand up almost to his elbow, nails lengthened into claws. It looked comically small next to the dragon, his scales tiny in comparison. From what Levi could tell, his company was about equal to his own size in dragon form. He certainly seemed relaxed, sitting by him without any worry. He was jealous he couldn’t do the same, but maybe it was best that he be reminded he wasn’t free.
Levi opened his mouth to speak, but stopped himself, knowing the strain of draconic words on his human throat would be painful. Instead he smiled and nodded gently. “Do you mind if I touch you?” He asked softy.
Malcolm nudged the blue scales with his nose, impressed that the slave was able to transform this much and surmising that he must have a more lenient master. The gold dragon shuffled a bit closer, practically surrounding the other dragon as his snout came to lay in Levi’s lap.
You went home without me.
I didn’t think you would want to go with me, Malcolm.
Malcolm frowned, but conceded that the vampire had a point. “Well you were acting like a git but I still think it’s this castle. A trip home would have been nice.”

Malcolm knew him all too well and, despite that, he still flushed under his sight as if beckoning him closer. Philippe wondered if he was in fact embarrassed, or he just pretended to be to get back at him at this point. It worked. Philippe walked up to him, taken with the sight of the golden scales coloring parts of the dragon’s skin. He still remembered how they felt against his touch, but it had been a long time since he had seen or touched them.
“You are not wrong”, Philippe admitted, chuckling, “but after the week I’ve had, my standards reached a new low.” He shook his head, preferring not to go into detail on what was over with now. He lowered himself to the dirt floor, taking a seat by the dragon’s side. At the mention of Àngel, he groaned. “You are going to nag me about him until I introduce you two, aren’t you?” Philippe sighed. “Fine. Join us for dinner some time.”
“Of course, I’m nothing if not curious. My hoard was once entirely a collection of knowledge - worthless trinkets my sister called them.” Malcolm was tempted to return to his old cave and see if anything survived. He’d woken up among a pile of moldy books with incomprehensible scribbles in faded and running ink. But the dragon had collected other objects in his youth. Usually little magical items that pertained to something he studied.
“I met your sire.” The gold dragon looked over with a bit of a frown. “Perhaps he simply fooled me, but he seemed to have a gentle heart. Imagine my surprise.”

He didn’t pay half as much attention to the sky above his head as he did the ground, a typical vampire mistake, and though the shift in the breeze hit him, Philippe didn’t catch his friend’s presence until he spoke from his seat beneath a tree. The fact Malcolm was naked outside was very telling, after all he had never quite been an exhibitionist before and the vampire had the sneaking suspicion that hadn’t changed. This time, though, he wouldn’t have minded too much if he was wrong. “Not as much as yourself”, Philippe said, curling his lips into an indecent smile while his eyes traveled the dragon’s naked skin unabashedly, “but definitely and even more so now.”
Taking a few steps in the man’s direction, he continued: “I have good days too, you know.”
Malcolm flushed as the vampire stared at him and looked away. He didn’t exactly have a way to cover himself, and he knew Philippe would only find more amusement in his embarrassment. He let some of his scales show through, more comfortable with patches of gold covering his weak human skin even though it logically did nothing.
“I always thought your idea of a good day was torturing some poor unsuspecting soul, or conquering cities.” The dragon snorted in amusement. “It’s been awhile. Been busy with your human?”

Arashi was awake. Àngel survived his possession. Samuel was (almost) back to his original nagging self and Marcel hadn’t stained his Persian rug while nearly bleeding out in his suite. All was well, or at least better than it had been in a long while. He wasn’t torturing or being tortured by anyone, most of his (neighboring) enemies had been dealt with and those he loved were safe from harm for now. Philippe hadn’t felt as ease as he did then in weeks and after checking in on Àngel and Arashi, he headed outside the castle for a well-deserved walk in the sunlight.
Oymyakon was cold all year round, but Philippe never held a grudge against the cold. The frozen scenery was breathtakingly beautiful, mountains covered in a thick blanket of snow framing the picture, and if he had need for air, it’d have been his pleasure to give it away at the sight the gardens. There was green under his boots, fair, but present nonetheless, and the vampire wondered whether it was one of the castle’s many tricks, or the weather was still kinder at that time of the year. Regardless of the reason, Philippe was thankful there was more than shades of white to look at outside the castle.
He came to a stop at the sight of a pebble on his way. Reaching down, the vampire picked it up and, alongside a few more, he got back on his feet to throw them ahead one by one.
There was little aim to that childish game but the satisfaction of hitting something from far away. The first pebble dug a hole into a tree. The second, knocked all lemons down a lemon tree. The third — well, the third landed behind a bush and drew a sharp whine out of someone. Philippe let out a chuckle at the sound. “Bullseye”, the vampire whispered to himself, pleased, and despite his surprise.
Malcolm was enjoying the freedom of the cold wind beneath his wings when he spotted a familiar form on the castle grounds. He was tempted to ignore the vampire and continue his flight, but it had been too long since he had seen Philippe. He found himself curious.
The dragon circled for a moment as he caught the familiar scent and began descending. There wasn’t enough room for a fully grown dragon (even if he was a runt) in the clearing, so he made sure to begin the painful transformation as he lowered himself to the ground. By the time Malcolm landed he was human, baring a pair of wings which quickly folded into his back as he rolled his shoulders.
Malcolm took a seat and stretched a bit before he looked up at his old friend then to the tree. He had to make a conscious effort to warm his naked skin, but after stretching his wings he wasn’t as grumpy about it as he might have been otherwise. “Enjoying yourself?”
Nik roared. “DON’T CALL ME THAT!” He huffed. “You’ll do well to remember that I am in no mood for backtalk or sass, Malcolm. What has me ‘on edge’ is my business and my business alone. Tell me, would you rather I break slaves? Break you? Breaking furniture keeps me from tearing someone limb from limb, so which is the better option? Now SIT DOWN.”
“You don’t get to do this. Not with me.” Malcolm took a seat at the other’s desk, the wood turning black with the literal heat of the dragon’s anger as he reigned himself in. He wouldn’t do so for anyone else - would let his tongue and fire lash out and burn whomever was in front of him without care. But Niklaus was different, as always. So the dragon didn’t move from his spot, gripped the smoking arm chair and grit his teeth as he looked to his friend. “Is that who you’ve become Niky? When did you start believing that shite about vampire superiority? Why the fuck are we here! It’s obviously poisoning your mind!”

Nik looked up, and at the boy’s defiant words, he sped over and gripped the boy by the throat. He didn’t cut off any air or blood, but he did slam him into a nearby bookshelf and break it, books falling to the floor. “You will do as you’re told and not give me any lip about it, Malcolm. Or you’re fired. Am I understood?” He let go and growled, smoothing out his own clothes. “I’m taking full control of distribution of all bloodwine production in Scotland. As you know, we’re second only to Italy. I’m aware that there are private distributors, but I’m taking them. They operate in my country. I’m done letting others profit off of me. Bloodwine will be made exclusively with Faerie blood and the faeries that are donating will be pre-screened by me and will be willing donors. Sit down, Malcolm. We’ll be in here for a while sorting out my country. Get on the phone with every vampire land owner and have them fax over the deeds to every business and home. And I want restriction on turnings. I’d like to control the vampire population in Scotland because they are breeding too fast.”
Before he even had any time to start cursing the hand around his neck was gone and the dragon was left blinking in a half broken book shelf. Malcolm glared as the vampire spoke, rubbing his neck despite the fact that he hadn’t held him with any real amount of force.
“Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down. One thing at a time.” Mal extracted himself from the bookshelf letting the remaining books fall to the floor and crossed his arms as he stared up at his employer. “First let’s start with how much furniture you’re breaking lately.”
The vampire had a temper to rival his own, but even Malcolm found the amount of repair that needed to be done to the suite exorbitant. “What’s got you so on edge Niky? You’re acting a bloody nightmare - even more than usual.”

Patrick could do nothing but laugh. “You are not the first to say that,” he admitted in between gusts of air forced from deep in his belly. “A confusing bloke….yes…that’s probably the most accurate description of me yet. That or old man.”
“Old? You definitely don’t look a day over 40, not to mention you seem to have a gentle heart,” Malcolm teased, his small smile faded a bit as he considered it. “Most of us let our hearts turn to stone as we age. It’s easier that way. How do you do it?”

“I am new and I know we’re property, but if they wanna sell us and rent us and have people claim us or whatever, then why don’t they take care of the property better?” He argued back. This guy was an asshole, but Beaux was gonna blame that on his injury that just wasn’t going away.
“Some will. But keep in mind that people treat their property in different ways. Some people baby their cell phones, some people have cracked screens and drop them in puddles.” Malcolm could hardly believe anyone was this naive anymore. That was the nice thing about the modern age - most people were far more realistic about the horrors of the world. “Not to mention sadism is a thing. Have you really never heard of this? Your perspective on this... it’s like a child.”

“What about the guards?” He arched an eyebrow. Shouldn’t they help with that? “I don’t know what else to tell you, man.”
“You’re either stupid or new. I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say you’re new so I’ll give you some advice,” Malcolm crossed his arms. “Anyone who isn’t a vampire is a second class citizen. And if you’re a slave, you’re worse than that in their eyes - you’re property. They aren’t going to treat you like anything else unless you get lucky, so don’t go blindly trusting them.”
Malcolm. Come to my office. Now.
Someone’s demanding.
The dragon grumbled angrily, but headed to his boss’ office as requested. He knocked once on the door before opening it and entering the room. “What? Am I not even good enough for a please?”

“Hey man, just go get some help already.” He shook his face in disgust by the hand. It was so disturbing for him to even look at, but he was glad this guy pulled it away.
“Help isn’t exactly easy to come by. Not in this castle, for people like us.” Malcolm glared at the slave, barely holding himself back from calling the boy a pansy little ninny. “At least not without strings attached.”

Levi nodded, biting his lip. He raised an eyebrow as the boy began to strip, guessing him to be some kind of shifter. The dragon leaned back, sighing fondly as he watched the colors in the sky.
As the other dragon took off beside him his eyes widened, watching him. He scrambled to his feet, eyes not leaving the dragon, a slight swell of envy that he couldn’t do the same. He sighed, running his fingers through his hair and sitting again, holding his hand in front of him and letting his scales come through, the closest he’d been able to get to his true form yet.
Malcolm relaxed as he felt the wind under his wings and the sun warming his scales. He circled the castle for half an hour before finally touching down next to the slave once again. He was was loathe to change back into his human skin, so he simply settled onto the grass next to Levi. It didn’t matter that they didn’t really know each other, Mal felt comfortable enough with the fact that the other dragon was kin, if only in name.
