Anyone can slay a dragon… but try waking up every morning and loving the world all over again. That’s what takes a real hero.
Brian Andreas (via wordsnquotes)
“Did you know this place has a Wikipedia page?” The question wasn’t one that she’d put much thought into before letting it pass her lips, and she hoped that she wasn’t speaking to an empty room. Not that it was an uncommon occurrence for her recently, but she’d been told the wristband would help with that. “I mean, we have Wikipedia pages. Most of us, as far as I can tell. Isn’t that a bit crazy? What’s next, a fanclub?” Looking up from the laptop screen, she gave the person (thankfully a live one) a small grin.
“I’m afraid several of us do, in fact, have fanclubs.” Zaire looked up with amusement shining in his eyes and painted on his lips. He hadn’t expected it – the attention of the public and the watchful eyes of the media – and while he still wasn’t used to it, it was slowly becoming another part of life. He couldn’t exactly blame the outside world for their interest in the ‘extraordinary people’ of Metro City. His first few weeks in the program had been spent in wide eyed wonder, as he scrolled through countless articles about the supers of the tower, however, he had recently begun to realize that you could only learn so much from such research. People would only reveal as much as they wanted to, and there was no knowing whether there was any reliability or truth to the articles found online. “Although, I’m not really sure why. Most of us haven’t done anything remarkable, at least not yet.”
cat got your tongue || zaire + emerie
@emerie-ducain
Four minutes. Feet slapped against the concrete floors of the tower, tripping over each other before finding their rhythm as Zaire raced to make it to his training session.
One minute. Of course he had chosen to fall asleep right before he had somewhere to be, and of course he had forgotten to set any sort of alarm. It was sheer luck that he had woken in time for a mad dash to his session, even if it meant he was going to be late. The hands of the clock continued to tick away even as Zaire rounded the very last corner and the doors to the training room came into much-welcomed sight. He burst through the doors, lanky figure skidding to an abrupt halt.
There was a moment of panic in which he couldn’t find her. Maybe she wasn’t coming? It was beginning to become a habit of the supers in the tower to skip out on their schedules for the day. But just as the anxiety was beginning to well up in his chest, golden eyes brightened and a grin that had threatened to appear earlier, at last, spilled across his features. There she was.
“Emerie.“ His voice rung out across the room as his feet once again picked up stride to move to her location.
“If you’re looking for your training partner, that would be me.”

A purple card, cut into the shape of a heart, is slid under his door. It has a picture of a smiling stick figure in the center, outlined in glitter. On the inside, a message is scrawled; "dear Sunshine, i hope ur vday is sparkly and bright!! u rly brighten up my day!!! i'm sorry for these truly awful jokes!!! -penny macallister". Taped to the card is a package of Skittles.
A warm smile tugged at the corners of his lips as his eyes flickered over the Valentine. ”Taste the rainbow, huh?” The jokes really weren’t that awful, besides, they were successful in bringing a smile to Zaire’s face. How did she know he liked skittles? He tore open the package, immediately selecting a red one to eat (they were the best) as he slid the card into a drawer along that contained many other miscellaneous items he had collected since arriving at the tower.
“Am I Scully or are you Scully? This is an important question to answer before we go forth and fight crime in a science fiction manner.” She looked up at the older boy, laughing softly. “I don’t think I’d mind going from superhero to special agent.”
"I've always been more of a Mulder person, myself, but maybe neither of us is Scully. We could be an entirely new pair of paranormal investigators. I wouldn’t mind too much either, but if I could keep the superpowers and still be a special agent, that would be ideal.”
Emerie fought the urge to smirk. As if he wasn’t going to tell her his name–he’d already told her everything else. To prove her point his hand was outstretched a moment later and this time she did smirk. “Zaire,” she nodded her head, taking his hand and shaking it lightly. “Pleasure’s all mine.” To say that she was smug about the whole situation wouldn’t have been far off–she took a large amount of pleasure in getting information from people, especially if they didn’t realize what they were saying. “I don’t think it’s unfair at all,” she admitted, relaxing back into the couch with a nonchalant shrug. “Some people like talking and other people like listening. Maybe you just didn’t ask the right questions.” Pausing, she turned to look at him only to roll her eyes and let out a small snort. “What’re you doing?” She motioned to his face, laughing. “You look ridiculous, stop that. I’ll give you one. One question and one answer. Deal?”
He raised an eyebrow in response, laughter still dancing in his eyes – Zaire hadn’t really expected the whole ‘puppy dog eyes’ thing to work in the first place. “Just one?” He leaned back in his seat, arms folding into each other as if he were contemplating what to say next. “You’re going to have to give me time to think of a good question, then.” There was something too blatantly obvious about repeating his question about her abilities, so he would have to come up with something. “If...you could leave here and go anywhere in the world, where would you go?” It was stupid and he knew it. Zaire found himself wincing internally at the question, but it was too late – his one question was wasted.

In Time of War || Zaire & Femke
“Wrong?” Femke offered the question as if she had not a clue what he could be talking about, despite the lines that ran clearly down her face, reflecting the lights not presented by his fingertips vividly. “Nothing’s wrong.” The crack in her voice betrayed otherwise, as did the failed attempt at another smirk. Her lips were trembling too viciously.
The eye contact she held with him after the clear break in her voice was drawn out, all sorts of hurt swimming in her eyes. It took her a minute to step into the room, but as soon as she had the familiar comfort of just simply Zaire washed over her. Surprising that it was comfort that made her cry.
No longer was it the light, silent tears that had been shed so few and far between in the hallway. Once in the shelter of her brother’s room, Fem dropped everything. All composure, all dignity, all shields. There were no words spoken, the only sound pushed from her chest were the sobs muffled by her hand as she sunk onto the edge of his bed.
It was so typically Femke to be denying any type of emotion too far outside of her usual snarky persona, and Zaire offered her a pained smile mirroring that on her own face before he shut the door behind them.
He had known it would come soon – the breakdown. She had only ever been able to keep up the act around him for so long before the walls crumbled. However, Zaire’s sister rarely cried. Her outbursts were usually in anger – screaming and throwing things and a strangling darkness overwhelming the room. This was different, and though he didn’t know why it was different, empathy washed over him.
Fem collapsed on his bed, and there he was beside her, concern etched into every line of his face. “Tell me.”
friend-making 101 || zaire & fionn
Fionn sighed, shuffling the cards again and dealing them out for another game of solitaire. It was one of the rare periods of downtime he had after dinner, though for once Felix wasn’t there to hang out with. No, he was busy - Fionn didn’t quite want to ask what exactly his friend was busy with. That, he reasoned, was better off staying unknown. So here he was, sat in one of the rec rooms by himself, playing game after game of solitaire.
That is, until he spotted a familiar face wandering by the doorway. What was his name again? Zane, Zeke, Z-
“Zaire!” he found himself calling, waving the other super over. “Cmon, come play some cards with me. Please?” Fionn didn’t know much about the other super, other than the fact Zaire was able to manipulate light - the media called him “America’s golden boy” - but he wanted to know more. He’d only barely admit it to himself, but he looked up to Zaire. He wanted people to call him the “golden boy”, and the only way he saw that happening was if he befriended Zaire and learned from him. So cards it was.
He’s wandering the building looking for some sort of distraction when he hears someone call his name. Zaire. America’s golden boy turns his head only to lay eyes on the subject of his envy – Captain Impossible himself. He blinks once. Twice. Then the signature grins tugs the corner of Zaire’s lips and suddenly his face transforms into the epitome of charm. At last, his distraction had been found.
“What sort of cards? I happen to have no experience in card games other than go-fish.”
