honestly? she was seeking refuge in the coffee chain after ( once again… ) stinking the apartment up with smoke from a failed toastie endeavour. no part of her expected to run into cam after she’d made the trek to his place to deliver his birthday present, certainly not in here. the worshipping grounds of the gentrified enemy. “oh.” unconsciously, a hand pushes the red locks away from her face, a smile slowly finding its way as she nods. “yeah, for halloween. needed it for the costume but i think i’m going to have to go back again for the musical. we’ll see.”
there’s hesitation on her part. unsure whether she ought to make room, invite him to sit with her. she could do that, right? this was allowed as friends. “we did, as a group, yeah. obviously, couldn’t have done it without the gang.” she jokes, smoothing her hands awkwardly over her lap before she pulls her hot chocolate toward herself, moving her notepad out the way. “you want to sit down? i was trying to find you early actually.”
‘ sorry i missed it in action. ’
was he really, though ? if game day had taught the two anything, it was that they had an incapability of keeping their hands off one another. maybe it was for the best that they hadn’t encountered during halloween, perhaps threated to go down a similar path. still, his gaze trailed over cora as he haphazardly took another sip of his coffee. god, he really hated starbucks coffee. but he would be on campus until late and he desperately needed continuous coffee.
‘ the gang, right. ’ it was still so remarkable to him that the three of them were still friends. the peers he himself had encountered freshman year weren’t even in his line of sight. that was yet another thing that set him and cora apart. ‘ uh, yeah. yeah ! i’ll sit. ’ the tall male made quick work of it too. just in case she changed her mind. her final statement caused his eyebrows to furrow in confusion. ‘ find me ? why ? ’

“ from then, i just figured theatre was my calling. ”
since halloween, it was clear that scout thompson had returned to their body. what meant that they were fluid again. eyes wide and expressive, hands making stories all by themselves. it felt natural. it felt very much like they were falling back into themselves after a long day of being something else — something colder, foreign. luci had pulled that out of them to some extent, certainly, and it was her that got to see them so.
“ when did you get into theatre ? ”
luci’s eyes were just wide enough to feign the perfect amount of interest, lips curled in a false smile that was too pretty to really question the motives. she’d scoped out the type of person scout was rather early on in their interactions. and just like the actress she was, she was happy to play the part -- anything to stroke the other’s ego. after all, their confidence always radiated into adoration towards her. what more could she need ?
‘ that’s what i like about you. you’re unafraid to go for the things that you want. ’ the redhead hummed lightly, the proclamation matter-of-fact on her red lips. her compliments always had a self-serving purpose to them but scout didn’t need to know that. let them stay oblivious and happy and so very into her. ‘ -- myself, i’ve been doing it for all of my life. ballet lessons, vocal sessions... i had them all. my first role was annie, i think. ’

‘ you write for the paper, right ? ’
cam could be wrong. but he was one of the few rare people who actually read the tiger chronicles and he vaguely remembered seeing the brunette’s face in the staff page on the back. if he was incorrect, he would be cursing internally soon enough. his particularly misanthropic ways meant avoiding conversations as much as possible. the only reason he was delving into this one was in hopes of gaining something from it. he would see, he supposed.

a wave of triumph washes over the man, might as well have handed over a nobel prize with the amount of dramatics that often ensued when he got his way. “you won’t regret your incredibly intuitive decision. the chicken and dumplings are the best in the entire city, nay, the state!” rafael has no statistics to hand to prove that, but it’s artistic license right? and if you said it with enough conviction then it just had to be true in some way. besides, they were pretty good. “no we’re going for a meal, in a restaurant, not a field.” he waves the whole idea off “the whole what now? you want thirty salads?”
rafael snorts, eyes rolling but it only comes from a place of fondness for the other. “joking, mariana. you’re not paying for anything. might as well throw that purse in the trash in fact.”
‘ chicken dumplings or chicken and dumplings ? there’s a big difference. ’ mari inquired with a raise of her eyebrows, lips pursed together as she mulled the question over. chicken and dumplings seemed more likely in the south, but she wouldn’t count athens out for having some good asian cuisine in the area. at raf’s comment, the tiny brunette couldn’t help but let out a laugh with a shake of her head. ‘ salads are a meal. and no, i don’t have to eat thirty of them. the whole 30 is like... a raw food diet meal. no sugar, no dairy, no grains. it’s supposed to give your body a healthy restart. ’
realizing that she was rambling on and on, the young woman shook her head slowly as if to chase away her thoughts as she grinned at the man. ‘ well, i won’t do that -- it’s bvlgari. but i promise not to offend you by pulling out my wallet. shall we ? ’

their thursday night had begun somewhere productive, full of the will to study, get their last semester out of the way. but scout found that whatever essays they had to write and case studies they had to present were swimming in a sea of numbers and images that made no sense. so they’d graduated to the tv, tried to get their mind off of hundreds of things that didn’t stay there for more than a few seconds each. luci. seb. ria. what they were doing. how rainbow bank was going — how jade was going.
each thought was brushed aside in favour of the blaring white noise of the tv and the eerie silence of an empty apartment.
which is why they quivered at first when there was a knock. they looked at it from their couch, accusingly, as if to curse whatever was behind it away. but it didn’ t work — a presence was palpable. maybe kat had ordered food to her own address by mistake, because there was no one else that’d bother to come over then. they picked themselves up, each weary joint creaking as they did. god, they just weren’t going to be like they used to.
not all visitors were friendly, and the peephole usually cleared all misconceptions. but from what they saw on the other side of it, the vague, distorted image of dark hair and wet cheeks and some kind of unnatural tilt to her stance — it made their hand reach for the doorknob was soon as they registered it. but before they opened it, they kept their entire arm taut, their breath hitched, and their voice low. they could sound rather harsh if they had to.
the door clicked open to even more silence in the corridor. “ what ? ”
jade smiled at the sight of scout, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. she couldn’t claim to be ecstatic to see them ; after all, their prior conversation had cut them both to the bone and the silent treatment had been the only way to recover from it all. still, the woman stepped into the quiet apartment, dropping the half-empty bottle of whiskey into her brother’s arms as she invited herself in. with her now free hands, she ran her fingers through her dark tresses as she spun about, deceivingly warm gaze surveying the surroundings.
‘ got rejected from stanford today. ’ she answered pleasantly, a cynical smile in place. ‘ the very same stanford that has been begging me to join their psychology program since undergrad, the very same that sends that stupid little gift basket every holiday. ’ jade was rambling. but who cared, really ? this needed to be off her chest.
the university hadn’t given her a reason why for her rejection. but they didn’t need to. she knew exactly what had changed.
‘ my prediction. . . ’ she piped up, her voice softer than ever expected. she was too exhausted to be any louder. taking a moment to collect her thoughts, jade flashed the other a broken smile, blinking back the rapid onset of more tears. ‘ i won’t get in anywhere, i think. not even a state school. i’m being. . . what’s it called -- blackballed. that’s what it’s called, right ? that’s what’s happening, isn’t it ? ’
her sad gaze landed on scout as if they had the answers between the two of them. for once.

‘ i adored your costume, by the way. ’
an innocent comment -- one coming lucinda ratcliffe, which meant it was the highest of honors. hell, it was even said with the most saccharine of smiles as the redhead took a seat next to henrietta, body language oozing familiarity that one would have with a dear friend. reaching out a manicured hand out to tuck a brown lock behind the other girl’s head, luci tilted her head, eyes widening in curiosity as she spoke up one more: ‘ so cute. wherever did you get it from ? ’

ari wasn’t the type to get upset over relationships (she would say girls but she’s had enough “gay panics” to say that wasn’t true). it just wasn’t her style. she had dealt with so much more in her life that it seemed stupid to get upset over so trivial. so she was more than confused when she found herself feeling jealous at the halloween party when she saw rosalie and kat kiss. even more so confused when she felt the effects of that kiss for days after the party. it’s not like her and kat were dating. they only ever hooked up when ari could excuse it by being drunk. obviously, kat meant more than she was willing to admit.
“you ever feel like life’s just like orange juice after brushing your teeth? horribly unpleasant.”
‘ damn. ’
ty clicked his tongue, eyebrows raising as he looked the student over. he had to wonder if he was ever that dramatic at that age. teenaged years and twenties always seemed to be an utter whirlwind of emotions that no one but oneself could quite understand. he had countless of experience as a ta with just letting them get it all off their chest. ‘ -- you feeling like this so quickly after halloween ? didn’t treat you right ? ’
sabvrtooth:
the last thing nathan expected to see on a tuesday at around eight in the morning was a girl snorting a line off the sink ledge in the men’s bathroom. while he washed his hands, he tried not to stare at her. but when she was done, she straightened up and wiped her nose. the girl winked at him and headed for the exit. as for nate, he stood there for a bit even after his hands were dry; just to assure the girl was completely gone and to break out of his confused stupor. he then exited.
to the closest person available he spoke still with that dumbfounded expression, “that girl who came out of the men’s bathroom. yeah, she was snorting cocaine off the counter in there. i just thought someone else should know that.” he shook his head, “must be a rough morning. how’s YOUR tuesday so far?”
cam’s eyebrows knitted together as he looked over at the other, lips pursed together in an unamused manner. of all the conversations he’d expected to happen today, this surely was not one of them. ‘ uh, okay. ’ he initially responded, running his fingers through his wild dark curls as he took in what was being said to him. ‘ ... too much of that sounds like a gossip girl rerun, so i’m just gonna go with -- my tuesday is clearly a lot more boring than yours. ’
ah, he’d said more than five words to someone. if he was being honest, he deserved a medal for that feat alone.

@ofacademias ( for mari !! )
“think they’re showing freaky friday at eight.” again. not that cora minded, chuck on any romcom or teen drama and she was there. fancied another bridget jones rewatch but the last had ended up in a scratched dvd so that was a bust. the redhead rolls onto her back then, scrolling through her phone for a film worth bingeing to. with all the snacks littered on mari’s bed, it would be a shame to let them go to waste on a half assed movie.
still. girls night was girls night. and anything would do as long as she had the other. “is there anything you wanna watch? i’m in the mood for soul crushing romance but… oh, atonement’s on netflix now! or closer?”
‘ which one ? if it’s not the jamie lee curtis lindsay lohan one, then pass... ’ mari answered softly, picking at the slice of pizza that resided on her plate. most of the food that occupied her bed was massively unhealthy but girls’ night in only came once every blue moon and she wouldn’t be a party pooper about the whole ordeal. glancing over at her best friend, the tiny brunette let out a quiet yawn as she collided backwards into the pillows, her hand stretching out to blindly grab for her phone.
she found it after a few moments, and eagerly began to read through her text messages.
‘ atonement is your idea of a soul crushing romance ? it makes me so sad. ’ now that mari thought of it, she supposed sad could be a synonym used for soul crushing. ‘ -- how about the devil wears prada ? ’

teeth sliced into the inside her cheek as she knocked on the door, frustrated to see the tremble in her hands. jade thought she’d been doing a fine job of keeping it all together. sure, she was drinking a lot more -- but that wasn’t the worse thing she could have been doing. after all, there wasn’t a need to remain sober when she had so much fucking free time on her hands ; no one could police her for doing whatever the hell she wanted with it.
shit, she was drunk right now. granted, that was because she’d just received some terrible news.
she didn’t know who to turn to. the silent treatment towards sebastian had turned into a full-on cold war. astoria was her friend, sure, but the two were better at alcohol than emotions. and her brother ? they were fighting. the thompsons were known for their pride and neither knew how to wave a white flag. but after the email she’d received, the woman was a bit more willing to tuck her tail between her legs, rocking up at scout’s doorstep with tears in her eyes and a half-empty bottle of tequila in her hand. fuck fighting -- she needed someone.
it was exhausting being alone.
--- @ofrcsilience !
‘ hmm. . . what were you saying ? ’
mari’s gaze widened apologetically as she looked up at her editor-in-chief, lips pursed in guilt. normally, the tiny brunette was always on her a-game and eagerly doing all she could to please her higher-ups. but today, her mind was littered with distractions. good distractions, to be fair. all she had to do was thinking back on the halloween party and a stupid smile crossed her face and then the next thing she knew, she was grabbing her phone to send newt a text. cora had already teased her relentlessly about her new behavior but truly, it couldn’t be helped.
running her fingers through her dark hair, she sat up a bit straighter to show henrietta the respect she deserved, dropping her iphone back into her gucci purse to cover up the evidence of her distraction. it was newspaper time -- not socializing time.
‘ i’m so very sorry, henrietta. ’ she added on genuinely. ‘ i swear i’m listening now. ’

nothing stayed secret at riverbank. ty hated that fact as much as he loved it. on the best of days, he got some amusing gossip about students or an insider exclusive of when it was barbecue day in the cafe. but on the worst of days, he got sympathetic looks from students and co-workers alike the day after elene had moved out. it was a blessing as much as it was a curse. today’s rumor mill ? he didn’t know what the fuck to make of it.
was elene really thinking of transferring to another university ?
the thought of not seeing her every day, even briefly, felt like a punch to the gut. ty didn’t know how to act in her presence, yes -- but that didn’t mean he wanted her to leave. he, above all people, knew how much she loved this place and had fostered a sense of community here. it seemed like such a mistake to throw that all away. and on his end, it seemed like a mistake to let her.
whether they were together or broken up, it didn’t change how he felt.
the man leaned against the clay brick stone building as students began to pour out, signaling the end of a lecture. lips pursed together, ty contemplated if this was a good idea or not. maybe, he was overstepping. but before he could second-guess this all, the sight of his ex caused him to stand up straighter, words out of his mouth before he could think of a softer way to approach this all.
‘ you really plannin’ on leaving ? ’
