Rio Edmundo Martinez comes from a family of fighters. Literal fighters. The Martinez’s take pride in their lineage of MMA wrestlers, that started back with his grandfather Antonio. Their name has been respected in that industry for as long as Rio can remember. 

He was originally born in Venezuela and his family made their way to America, more specifically Florida, when he was only four years old in order to be more present in the MMA world. Raul was lucky that Sonia had given him four sons and as soon as they were able to understand enough, he started to train them to become wrestlers as all the previous Martinez. And it worked for three of them but when it was time for the youngest to come around, he wasn’t into it. Rio had always been a more sensible child than all of his brothers, he would much rather spend time with his mom in the kitchen than in the backyard sparring with his brothers, which wasn’t something Raul approved in the least. 

Rio was only nine years old when the abuse started. His father would literally beat him until he’d pass out whenever he’d refuse to wrestle. And his mother, poor Sonia, in attempts of protecting her frail young boy would end up with a bruised eye too. It took years for Rio to finally understand that what was happening to him wasn’t normal. A father shouldn’t treat his son like that and a husband shouldn’t raise a hand to his wife. That’s when he started to attend the gym and around the time he was sixteen, he was finally able to stand up for himself and for his mom.

After an argument ensued, Rio promised his mom that that would be the last time Raul would dare to hurt her. And that’s when he stepped in and took care of the situation, this time leaving his father on the floor. After that, Rio and Sonia left and never looked back. They found their way to Aspen Creek, where his mom had relatives that could help them start over and Sonia was quick to find herself a nice enough job to take care of the two of them. Rio, as stubborn as he still is, decided to take a few gap years in order to help their little family of two steady themselves, picking up odd jobs for a while. Sonia wouldn’t allow him to skip college completely though and as soon as they were stable, Rio went to college to study the Culinary Arts as that had always been a dream of his.

The years passed and he stayed focused on himself, on his career and on keeping his family safe, which caused him to become somewhat closed off and reserved, something that damaged his ability of nurturing lasting relationships — which has been somewhat of an issue with his spouse but they've mostly been able to work things out. The abuse that occurred in his childhood is something that still haunts him and he didn’t leave the gym since, even taking up boxing a few years back. He hates the thought of one day not being able to protect himself or his mom in case his father would come after them.

Rio is now married to the love of his life, a real friends to lovers story, and they have a beautiful four year old son together. Despite a tough past, he tries his best to keep any trauma from getting in the way of his family, usually keeping things to himself. However, Rio definitely still has some pent up anger issues and takes part in an underground fight club in order to release that, a shameful secret that he keeps from his spouse. He's just too scared of becoming anything like his father and will do anything in his power to prevent that.

she chuckles lightly at the accusation, shaking her head at rio. “you can’t blame me for being the best baker in town.” she teases, her shoulders pull back into a shrug and there’s a smug smirk on her lips. “that’s understandable. i love the smell of pumpkin but it can be especially overwhelming during this time of year. and yes, that’s the one you’re looking for.” rory points. “it’s a new recipe so we’re testing the waters here at the festival. take a bite and let me know your thoughts.” she smiles warmly at him. “well, you’re not wrong. kids high on chocolate can be scary. i’ve been trying my best to keep my daughter away from such addictive evils but my mom is terrible sometimes.”

“ now, hold on. i feel like that isn’t really fair since you’re the only baker i got to. ” he teases rory. he knew he wouldn’t ever dream of changing bakeries now as he liked the treats and the little friendship he’d harbored with the cohen girl. he nods at her comment, he couldn’t stand the sight of another pumpkin pie or soup. thankfully, he rarely ever used that ingredient on his daily job. “ it looks like it tastes delicious. ” rio says before he takes a bite, humming as he nods. “ and it does. how do you always get it right it’s beyond me. i’ll take four pieces to go, please. can’t go home without a treat for my ma too. ” he chuckles. “ yeah, well, hold on for as long as you can. a grandma’s main purpose is to spoil the hell out of our kids. ”

halloween had always been fun, stef thought, dressing up, going trick or treating, the parties. family costumes had become a thing once his kids had come around, and he was familiar with the stresses of picking the right costumes. kids could be picky, that was for sure. "how old's your kid?" stef asks, offering the other a sympathetic smile. "ha, we've all be there, don't worry. i feel like you can't go wrong with something like a skeleton or a pirate."

rio couldn’t say he was the biggest halloween fan, he rarely even watched horror movies unless asked by his spouse. but his kid was very excited about the dressing up and the trick or treating, and he wanted to give gabe all the joys he didn’t really have as a child. “ he’s four, about to turn five. so, you know, he’s becoming quite argumentative and opinionated. which isn’t bad, it’s nice to see them develop before our eyes, but oh man, if i don’t get this right… ” he jokes. “ a pirate, now that’s a classic. feel like we could even improvise a fake wooden leg for the little man. ”

Fall was one of Bryony's favorite times of year - or as she liked to call it, Halloween season. In fact, costume shopping when her kid was little was always a highlight on the month, often leading to adorable duo costumes of Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc, Lilo and Stich, Alice and the Queen of Hearts. Of course, years passed and things changed, but Bryony always got excited when it was time to bring out fall decor and trinkets nevertheless, "Well, what kind of things are they into? We always liked dressing as our favorite movie characters from that year. Did they see the Garfield one? The Wild Robot?" It occurred to Bryony that Rio might not have spent as much time going to movies with his kids as she did as a single parent, "Oh, no, no, I promise you're very subtle."

fall has had its ups and downs for rio, but he’d been able to regain some happiness during those times as he watched his son grow and become more excited about the spooky season. he felt completely lost there, usually leaving that sort of thing to his spouse, but he really wanted to make gabe happy. “ well, he went through the obligatory inside out phase but that has passed. he did really like garfield, though, so i think you might be onto something. ” he hums as he searches the racks for the costumes. “ thanks for making me feel better. i’m trying to not come across as a useless dad here. ” he quips, laughing.

"I honestly have no clue what to pick when it comes to costumes. I usually let my family or publicist do that for me." Emily mentioned casually as she browsed through the racks of adult costumes. "I'd say go with something generic, like a Vampire or something like that?" She suggested, passing him several options. "I hope those help and your kids are grateful with whatever you choose."

“ well, your life definitely sounds easier than mine right now. wish i had someone to just pick things out for me — though you are giving me an idea right now. ” he thinks for a moment. he could call his mother, holler at her for help, but he doubles down on that. his wife had specifically trusted him with the task and he wanted to show that he could do it on his own. “ nevermind that idea. i think a vampire sounds cool as hell. or perhaps me and the wife can go as morticia and gomez, and the little one can go as cousin it. ” he imediatelly scrunches up his nose. “ oh gosh, that sounds awful, doesn’t it? ”

costumes were not rio’s strongest suit. he’d always been the bland one at halloween parties, even as a teenager when he finally allowed himself to have some fun. his creativity was reserved only for the kitchen because for anything else, he was completely useless. and this year, due to his spouse being too busy with work, he was in charge of picking up their costumes. and now he stands with his arms crossed, completely lost, looking at the array of choices before him. “ what do you do when your child has grown out of the superhero phase but still doesn’t know what kind of costume they want to go as? ” he asks out loud, to no one in particular, but looks at the other besides him. “ can you tell i’m utterly lost here? ”

“why, yes, they are. are you impressed by my work, mr martinez?” rory doesn’t like to brag, but she tends to go all-out for any themed holiday. this being the first time she’s at the harvest festival as a vendor also called for something more special. she wanted to impress. “a new flavor, huh? well, we have the most common ones that are pumpkin and sweet potato. but i would recommend the maple and cream apple pie. that’s a new one and i’m kind of obsessed. i think the kid’s going to like it, too. and if not, i do have a chocolate cream pie that is to die for.”

“ you know that i am. you’re the reason i’ve gained a few pounds lately, rory. ” he shakes his head in disapproval but there’s a modest smile on the corner of his lips. as a food lover himself, even if sweets weren’t his favorites, he still had to give the baker credits for her work. he scrunches up his nose at the first options, “ not a fan of sweet potato and already kind of over anything pumpkin related. but that maple apple pie sounds insanely tempting. do you have a freebie of that one as well? ” he mostly jokes but his eyes still roam through the stand. “ i don’t think i should feed my son any more chocolate so i think we’ll go with the other option. ”

open starter harvest fest, by local business stands !

the smell of freshly baked pastries surround her stand, the title of the bakery on display for locals and newcomers alike to know exactly where the deliciousness is coming from. rory can be found behind the stand with an already welcoming smile as she watches a potential costumer stroll by. “have you checked the pies? it’s all freshly baked, locally sourced. and yes, it did take me all night to make these, which is why i can confirm that they’re the best you’ll have today.” she points towards some pieces displayed on plates by the side. “here — we’re offering a free taste of our most famous ones. you can go ahead and grab one!”

rio doesn’t exactly have a sweet tooth, quite the opposite really, but sometimes he likes to indulge on a sweet treat whenever he can. rory cohen’s pies were a must on days where he knew both him and his wife would need it — so he’d stop by the bakery and take them home a little treat. he smiles as he approaches the stand, already eyeing for his favorite ones. “ are these all themed? ” rio chuckles lightly, impressed. “ they all look so good, as usual. but i think i’ll try a new flavor today. what do you recommend? and one for the kid, too. he’s back there playing but i just know he’ll need the fuel soon. ”

"honey, don't run off!" after hours walking around, even if she had known better and worn her sneakers, amara feels fairly depleated - - of course, the same can not be said to her child, especially after partaking on all sort of things they don't usually eat. the brunette stiffles a sigh, keeping the curly haired kid on her eyeline as she speaks softly to the one next to her. "you wouldn't happen to have some sort of aspirin, would you?"

the male stifles a laugh as he approaches the scene unfolding before him, an attentive eye as his own child runs away from their mother. “ he runs circles around us. ” rio shakes his head and hands his wife a warm drink, taking a sip of his own. “ i don’t but you don’t have to worry that pretty head of yours anymore, i can watch him for a bit now. you’ve already got your hands full around here, baby. try to enjoy the festival a little — i’ve heard good things about the ferris wheel. ” he winks. surely, rio wouldn’t mind losing his breath in order to catch up with a kid who’s surely having a sugar rush. not at all.
