so in my hc of what happened post-the final stroke, haru never really recovered from the hypoxia blackout after the fukuoka relay, everyone including himself thought he did but it was only because it didnt become apparent that he had permanent lung damage until he was 28, where he very suddenly developed pneumonia after an all-japan that was so bad that he didn’t just pass out he straight up nearly fucking died

and of course he had to quit after that, and of course rin, who had been with him for multiple years at that point, absolutely hates the mere thought of pro swimming now that it’s nearly killed his partner and wants to quit too, but is stopped by haru, who knows he’d regret putting the brakes on everything they had built out of a knee jerk reaction to what had happened

and like rin knows haru is right in long term but is also just agonized about this because even though he survived haru is still pretty sick and the thought of returning to the pool pisses rin off so bad

like im so serious rin is such a man driven by emotion that he coming within a hair of losing the person he wants to be with forever kind of breaks his goddamned mind for awhile so he keeps swimming only because haru asked him too but like. does it all weird and fucked up

he’ll be in his lane at a race having vivid dead wife flashbacks where haru stands in the shallows of the ocean smiling in the sun and it’s making him swim like a fucking deranged animal and the athlete in the lane over who rin hates for not being haru is just in the water like “i hope i win a medal :)”

out of all the rinharu fics i want to write/am writing this one i want to write the most bc out of every era of rinharu ive written post-FS the dead wife era is my favorite one and there is also not enough haru whump in this hell world especially ones that capitalize on his mysterious anime mom illness at the end of FS
