âReally?â Hank raised a brow, not surprised at his dogs reaction to new blood. But also, supremely disappointed in him. âNot even gonna⌠check him out? Make sure heâs not here to cause trouble? Okay then.â So much for having a good guard dog.
His cellphone lit up in his pocket, the vibration getting him before he even heard the ring tone.
Fowler.
Fucking terrific.
He knew it was coming. He was only hoping he would have a little more time before having to talk to him. Then again, probably should have saved himself the trouble and called him right after the incident. Oh well. He dug his hole. He would make or break in it. Or something. However the fucking saying went. He didnât rightly care.
âStay inside.â He shuffled Sumo and Connor in. âNot a good idea to play outside for a bit.â He couldnât say who might be searching for him. ⌠probably no one good, he could say that for sure. Cyberlife would want their equipment back, defective or not. Because he was worth money. Even just his parts.
âDonât get into anything. I gotta take this call.â
Connor couldnât help the smile that tugged at his lips at the way Hank chided his dog for being too friendly. It was true, the dog had pounced on Connor without taking a moment to decide if he was a threat. He supposed it could be because the man was stood beside him, but he had heard somewhere that dogs were better at sensing things than people.
The dog wasnât prejudiced either â he didnât seem to care that Connor was an android in the slightest.
Connor had been right. He did like dogs.
He lifted his head as the phone rang, noting the way the man tensed. Perhaps he expected bad news? It was probably about the incident earlier, possibly about Connor too. Connor, defective as he was, wasnât worth all that much â much less than a fully functioning child model, but his parts were valuable and they wouldnât be happy with the Lieutenant for taking him without buying him.
The Lieutenant wasnât going to buy him though â why would he?
After tonight, Connor would be sent right back and heâd be taken apart and scrapped like intended. He almost wished Hank hadnât taken him because now he had to wait longer for the inevitable.
He shouldnât feel apprehensive, but he did. He didnât want to be scrapped.
âYes Sir,â the small android replied as the door shut behind them after Hank had ushered him and Sumo inside. He wouldnât listen in on the conversation â it wasnât his place and Hank told him not to get into anything, so he would just stay where he was and pet Sumo.
