Call the Doctor
INVOLVED: Samuel Evans, Mercedes Evans, and Charlotte-Rae Evans TIME FRAME: Tuesday, July 11, 2019 LOCATION: Evans Home, Doctors Office; New Orleans, Louisiana SUMMARY: After fleeing from the scene at the mall, Samuel catches up with his wife and sister at home and finally realizes that he needs to take Mercedes to the doctor.
Samuel waited in his police vehicle outside of his house, after dropping Avery off at the station, for Mercedes and Charlotte so that he could take them down to the station for questioning. He was pissed beyond belief that he even had to do this. Had they just stayed put at the mall as he asked, this process would have already been finished. But nope, his wife was hard-headed and she was pulling his sister along for the ride.
Mercedes looked to her husband’s police car as they approached their home and she looked to his sister quietly before she looked away. This wouldn’t be good, she knew and she didn’t know what to expect from him. Waiting for the girl to bringing the car to a stop and park it she sat in the seat silently.
Charlotte drove up to the house and she bit her lip seeing her brother’s squad car. They were in trouble. She had half a mind to turn around and make a run for it like she saw people do on TV but then thought better of it. Pulling into the driveway, Charlotte parked the car before she looked at Mercedes. “We’re in trouble, huh?”
Samuel watched the car as it slowly approached and he slid from his vehicle, moving around to the front of his car, hands resting on his belt. Sigh a deep sigh he walked up to the parked car and knocked on the driver side window expectantly.
Mercedes looked to Samuel through the window as he knocked and she looked to Charlotte nodding her head. “Big trouble,” she breathed out.
Charlotte frowned up her face as Samuel knocked on the window and she slowly rolled it down, gazing at him sadly. “I was just following Mercedes…” she said out-right.
Samuel watched Charlotte roll down the window and he let out a noise of frustration. “Both of you, get out of the car.”
Mercedes looked to Samuel from the passenger side, at the young girl’s words she looked to her with wide eyes. At one point she herself had told Mercedes they needed to leave and as she snitched Mercedes head tilted, neck cracking a bit before she turned to looked away slowly. “No,” she said in a dark voice to her husband, “I need to rest…” she said in a voice that sounded nothing like her own.
Charlotte tucked her lips inward at her brothers demeanor and she slid from the car slowly, pulling the keys from the ignition at the same time. Looking back at Mercedes, Charlotte arched an eyebrow at the sound of her voice.
Samuel watched Charlotte get out of the car before he moved around to his wife’s side, opening the door. At her voice, Samuel stared at her. “What is wrong with you, come on,” he said to her a bit agitated. “If you had of just listened we wouldn’t need to go to the station,” he told her.
Mercedes eyes darkened as Charlotte removed herself from the vehicle, she stared straight ahead as her husband moved to open her door. She looked to him anger boiling to the surface and she shoved him as she unfastened her seatbelt and climbed out. “I said no!” she barked out aggressively, her voice deep and booming.
Charlotte eyes grew wide as the moon when Mercedes shoved Samuel back. “Whoa,” she said gently.
Samuel stumbled back as Mercedes shoved him and he huffed. She was his wife but he was on duty at the moment. She got no special treatment. He snatched her up, forcing her around and snaking both of her hands behind her back as he cuffed her quickly. “What the hell is wrong with you?!” he asked, having her pinned against the car now.
As Sam spun her around, moving to handcuff her Mercedes looked back at him. “Sam,” she breathed shocked, “what are you doing?” she asked quietly. “Don’t do this…” she begged as she looked to Charlotte for some help. “What is happening right now?” she asked as he pinned her to the car.
Charlotte moved around the car quickly as Mercedes seemed to come to and she looked at her brother. “Mercedes you don’t remember anything?" she asked.
Samuel looked at his wife incredulously. Pulling her from the car, he turned her around to face him, his hands on her shoulders. “What is wrong with you?” he said again. “You’ve been acting out and you’ve been forgetful, having dizzy spells…” he told her honestly, speaking calmly now.
Mercedes chest rose and fell, she was so scared in the moment, never in her entire life had she been arrested for anything. And here she was, her own husband doing so, might she add in front of their neighbors. “No,” she said brokenly as tears begin to wail up in her eyes, she knew she was missing hours of the day but she honestly didn’t know why or how. “I don’t know,” she cried scared. “I don’t remember leaving the mall…” she confessed.
Charlotte rubbed Mercedes back gently as she listened to her and her face frowned even deeper. “The whole car ride, you don’t remember?” she asked.
Samuel looked into his wife’s eyes, seeing that she was telling the truth. “We need to take you to the doctor,” he told her thoughtfully as he began to un-cuff her, placing them back on his belt before he took Mercedes’ face into her hands. “You’ve been acting very strange since we found out that you were pregnant. Are you really okay with all of this? Is it too soon?” he asked her needing to know.
As Samuel un-cuffed her, Mercedes sniffled lightly at him as she cradled her wrist in her hand. “I’m fine,” she whispered to him lightly as she looked up in his eyes. “I don’t know what’s wrong but I want these babies, I’m happy about them,” she told him honestly. “I also want them safe, she reiterate unsure what was wrong with her head and her mind. She was perfectly fine weeks ago and now this. “It’s my head,” she said tiredly.
Charlotte looked at Samuel before she sighed gently. “Mercedes…” she breathed out sadly.
Samuel looked at Charlotte briefly before turning his gaze to his wife. “Okay…” he said gently, speaking very calmly. “I am going to take you to the hospital,” he said in a soothing tone, looking down at Mercedes wrist. “We’re just going to get your wrist patched up okay…”
Mercedes nodded her head at Samuel, “okay” she said quietly to him.
Samuel sat in the hospital room with his wife, after they had given her a splint for her wrist and gave her instructions for proper healing. “Doc, can I talk to you privately for a moment?” he asked the older woman as he ushered her out the room, leaving Mercedes in there alone. “Can we also run a CT?” he asked quietly. “She’s been having a lot of dizzy spells and forgetfulness and honestly, just completely acting out of character…”
Mercedes sat on the examination table and she looked to her wrist, she looked very silly in her opinion with the splint on but she had sprained her wrist during her tumble and had to wear it. Flexing her fingers only slightly she rested her wrist in her lap, her other hand cradling it as she looked to her husband and doctor as they left the room.
Looking to Samuel the older woman said, “while pregnant?” questionably before he went on to explain himself and she licked her painted lips. “You think she may have some type of head trauma or even worse, a brain tumor?” she asked sliding her hands into her lab coat pocket.
Samuel nodded his head. He knew it was a possible risk however, he was willing to take it. “She passed out a few days ago, she was dizzy she said, and she might have hit her head, I don’t know. I wasn’t there for it, my baby sister was,” he explained. “However, she’s been losing large chunks of time and something will happen then all of a sudden she has no idea where she is or how she got there,” Samuel said trying to break it down to the doctor as best he could.
Nodding her head at the man she took the information all in. “Hm,” she hummed to herself before she looked back up at the large guy. “And you think it’s physical and not so mental?” she questioned. “Do you think she needs a neurologist or psychologist?” she asked with a raised brow.
Samuel nodded once more. “I think it’s physical,” he said honestly. He felt it all started right after they found out she was pregnant. It could possibly be for hormones but he felt in his gut that it was something else. “She’s a psychologist herself…”
“Hm,” the woman said again, “well if she is up to it, and obliges” she shrugged slightly. “It can be done, as long as we keep in mind the risk factors,” she reminded him.
Samuel grimaced. “See…” he said gently. “That’s the problem… she doesn’t believe anything is wrong with her. She’s not going to agree…”
“Mr. Evans, don’t take this the wrong way… but that is truly none of my business,” she said professionally. “Now if you are asking me to walk in there and scare her half to death into the radiology room… I must say I cannot,” she told her. “But I can surely explain my concerns based on what you’ve told me.”
Samuel let out a sigh and nodded. “Could you please, you’re a doctor she might listen to you…”
“Okay, sure,” the woman said to him. “I will let her know of the concerns,” she breathed out as she moved to re-enter the space Mercedes inhabited.
Mercedes continued to sit there quietly, her eyes grew tired as waited. Eyelids falling heavy and she shifted on the table top as the doctor returned and she looked to her patiently.
Samuel walked back into the examination room behind the doctor and he sat down, hands folded in his lap.
“Well Mrs. Evans, it was presented to me that you are having an issue with dizziness, mood swings, odd behavior,” she listed looking to Samuel than Mercedes. “Even a loss for time and confusion,” she spoke calmly. “I would like to look deeper into that,” she told her. “It could be some type of head trauma… maybe for a fall you had recently, or worse…. a brain tumor,” she sighed. “So it is my best interest to conduct a CT scan… we can talk about the risk factors but all in all we don’t know medically if it’ll even harm the children. It’s just a precaution...”
As the doctor spoke, Samuel nodded along slowly, gazing at Mercedes with sad eyes. He just wanted her to get whatever help she needed.
Mercedes looked to the woman as she began to speak, her eyes moved from her to Samuel and back a few times before she shifted. “Okay,” she said simply with no real protest which would be new for her, anything she could counter she usually would. “Brain tumor…” she repeated as she looked to her husband. “Worse case scenario, I have a brain tumor, and that would mean what exactly?” she asked the doctor knowing what it would mean for her but wanting to hear it outright, or rather for her husband to. Clearly he talked this woman up to this and thought there was a serious issue with her.
Samuel gazed at Mercedes as she took it all in without protest, which shocked him a bit. At her words, he licked his lips slowly, looking to the doctor for an answer.
The doctor looked to Mercedes, “depending on if it is cancerous or not, surgery or radiation,” she told her truthfully.
Mercedes looked to the woman and nodded her head, of course she already knew that, again she just wanted Samuel to hear it aloud. “Okay,” she said with no further questions and a slight shrug.
Samuel looked to the doctor in shock. “Cancerous? Surgery or radiation, Doc, she’s pregnant…”
Turning to Samuel the woman in the lab coat said, “yes, but it could be noncancerous as well. We aren’t sure yet…” she said to the man. “And there could not even be a tumor,” she added quickly.
Mercedes shifted on the table a little, stretching her back before she said, “let’s just get it done,” quickly to them both as she crossed her ankles.
Samuel looked to his wife in shock. How could she be so calm about this? She was a very emotional woman naturally, plus with the pregnancy hormones he expected her to be a bit more frantic about this. Especially considering her OCD and they were at a hospital after all. All of this just didn’t add up and expressed his point about something being wrong with her even more. “Whatever we have to do,” he said looking to the doctor with wide-eyes.
