“Oh, of course it is. I have all the money in the world as a grad student.” Isaac grinned lopsidedly. He didn’t really know what to make of his friendship with Penny, it was a lot of things mixed into one. “The least? At least you’re self-aware, darling.” He said back, dripping with sarcasm.

“ugh ick, i forgot you’re one of those” she said, with an eye roll. she was mostly kidding. she had nothing against furthering of one’s education, it just wasn’t the path that she decided to take, and she was doing fine. “what are you in for again? and the more important question, are you going to make a shit ton of money from it?” she teased.

penny had to do something like this before, when she was arrested for petty theft. they made her stand on the side of a highway in a bright orange vest and stab pieces of trash with a stick. it was easily one of the most humiliating parts of her life. one she didn’t like to think back on often, but there she was stabbing pieces of trash with a stick again. except this time, no vest. the person she was supposed to meet with and do this wasn’t there yet, she had showed up earlier and planned on cleaning up less than half of the trash in their designated area and leave them the rest, but it was taking longer than she liked. finally someone walked up with trash pick in hand. “you look like shit” she said, forcibly stabbing a protein bar wrapper. “and you’re late” they weren’t, but she wasn’t in a good mood and liked to bring everyone else down with her. @cfroyharper

Raya hadn’t been back at the Paragon long, but it had been enough to hear about all the madness that had gone on here. Freak storms and a weird mist that sent everyone off the rails? Of course she’d end up missing that. “Typical the one time i’m away is when things actually get interesting here.” She commented with a faint smirk. “Everyone done tripping on gas? Was it fun? — Is there any left?”

penny would be the first to admit that she didn’t look like her normal self. she had bags under her eyes, was out in public not wearing designer labels, and her normal glow was gone. whatever that mist shit was, fucked her onto a whole other level in more ways than one. “fun?” her voice still held it’s normal venom though. “yeah, if you like being psychologically tortured, than sure!” her voice switched into a stereotypical valley girl voice, “it was like, totally fun” but her eyes still held the heat.

“Hey, hey…” Niko held her close to him, gently kissing the top of her head. He was initially confused by her shock at his kiss, they’ve been together for a while, was it so new? But he dropped it as soon as she started crying. It had to take everything for her to be vulnerable even in front of him, that’s just how both of them were. 

“What happened?” He leaned back to look at her, his hands gently on her shoulders. His right hand wiped the tears off her face, gently enough so that her makeup wasn’t too smudged. “Who - or what’s gone?” 

being close to him, his arms wrapped around her, being comforted. she missed this, she missed it so much. but she wasn’t able to dwell on it long because she was still too preoccupied with herself. which wasn’t anything new. “my powers!” she screamed, anger laced in her voice. she wasn’t angry at him, she was angry at the situation and was taking it out on him. “i can’t do anything” she cried, calming down a bit. she tried to freeze the tear falling down her cheek, she could feel her eyes flicker but nothing happened. the glow simply fizzled out and her tear remained in its liquid state. “niko, i need them back. i need them.” her hands finding his. “i’m nothing without them. nothing”

Time Jump - Mist

Admittedly, Niko had been feeling off since the mist appeared. But after the storm hit, everyone was on edge and all he wanted to do was to find Penelope. He opened his phone to try to call her, initially confused when he saw that his background wasn’t a picture of her like it was yesterday. Everything seemed wrong, the world around him didn’t seem right. Like the world before and after the mist hit were totally different places. 

But he shrugged it off, he’ll deal with it after he finds Penny. After multiple missed calls and disconnects, he finally finds her in person. 

“Thank fuck, Pen.” He placed a quick kiss on her lips. “Where have you been?”

penny was running, her hide out in the bathroom was compromised when some crazy ass man came running in and started smashing the sinks and mirrors. her cheeks were tear stained and weren’t staying dry for long. she lost it, and no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t feel the rush of the cold soothing through her body. she couldn’t even turn the water that soaked the bottom of her dress into ice. she had to get out, get away. no one could see her like this. she was weak. vulnerable. everything she absolutely hated being. she worked too damn hard for herself to have it end like this. but still she was freaking out, and scared and she had no one to go to - pushing the people away that actually loved her. she wasn’t paying attention too busy looking behind her to make sure that kid flash idiot wasn’t finally trying to make his move.

“niko?” she asked, taken aback by his kiss. a couple hours ago they were at each other’s neck, and not in the good way. but now...now this was. new. she wiped a tear from her cheek quickly though, looking up at him ready to be strong but she wasn’t met with his usual annoyed glance. and it broke her, “ niko they’re gone.” she was getting worked up again, “ my powers, they’re gone! i’m so scared, i don’t know what happened. but they’re not there. i can’t lose them niko, i can’t.” she was barely making sense as the tears started pouring out and she crashed into niko’s chest, her arms wrapping around his abdomen as she hugged him.

“of course, it’ll be $50 of course. but that’s easy money right?” she teased with a small giggle. her relationship with isaac was interesting, there was a little bit of everything there. little sexual tension, little friendship, little busting each others balls. she enjoyed it - she didn’t get this all that much. “ego? please i’m the least egotistical person there is! yeah, yeah shut it”

Bullshit, her words were all bullshit. He knew that in his heart, she wouldn’t act on her pain and anger. But his slightly intoxicated and annoyance filled brain told him to keep the girls separate at all costs.  “Don’t you fucking dare, Penelope.” He didn’t really know where he stood with Portia, it’s always been a grey area. But what he did know is that he cared about her, maybe in a way that was different from Penelope. “What would you even do, hm?”

“aw come on now niko, but seeing you get this worked up is so much fun” she stood up then, her normally small stature being aided by the pair of heels. she lightly tapped his chest as she stood in front of him. “psychological warfare always sounds fun, or maybe we can roughen up that pretty little face of hers” she said, with a cruel smile. “ i thought you liked them with a little damage niko, i can recall several nights where you tried to kiss away my scars.” she looked up at him through heavy eyelashes. empty threats, sure, but that didn’t mean they weren’t helping her filter out some rage at the situation. she knew if she acted with physical harm she would lose the person in  front of her forever. but, a little chat with she who must not be named wouldn’t hurt anyone.

sober penelope wouldn’t have been so nice, but not only was all her normal angst and rage going towards two specific individuals right now, but she also looked incredibly amazing tonight. so she decided not to be a total bitch to everyone around her. “ if it’s on a hard to reach shelf, it’s usually more expensive. but, if you don’t ever want to pay for drinks you have to get to the bar early because that’s when the men with money go and they’ll specify what type of alcohol they want in their drinks and its usually the expensive kind. after a while they all get too drunk to care and then you’re stuck with some cheap ass vodka that actually is burning your throat as it goes down.”

penny looked up at her friend with a playful smile, “well when the man whose been eyeing us up form across the room finally grows the balls to come over, we’ll get you more wine” she winked, before turning to check out the man once more. “i on the other hand, need to switch to water just in case some bitch named portia is stupid enough to come here. i can’t go all frosty on her if my strut becomes a stumble.” she was thankful that her friend was here with her, or... more than friend? it was...complicated. but she needed someone by her side tonight, and winnie was the perfect person for the job.

Penelope only acted calm when she was angry when something was really setting her off, and he knew exactly what it was. He knew that whatever relationship he had with Portia would get back to Penelope, he was just hoping that he would have done a better job at avoiding her. “Jealousy never looked good on you, Pen.” But he told her anyway. “Portia, and don’t stress yourself out, she’s not coming.” He lied without hesitation. Like hell he was letting her go anywhere near Portia.

if penelope knew what insecurity looked like, that jab would have hurt her. instead it simply rolled off her back as easy as a hair flip. “ hm, i wouldn’t really call it jealously” she replied, her head tilting in thought, “do you remember when we used to talk about that high before a job, that rush of adrenaline knowing you were about to do something crazy but so fucking fun?” she took a pause and sipped her drink. “that’s what i’m feeling right now.” her eyes were cold, determined, and to a trained eye they would see she was actively holding herself back. “oh what a shame, i’m wearing the perfect dress to meet her.” penny was jealous, she was borderline raging and in her heart she knew these colorful threats weren’t real - that she wouldn’t hurt this portia girl simply for being with- in whatever capacity it was - niko. but she was hurt, and this was her way of dealing with it.

Niko knew she was coming before she ever moved next to him, the way her perfume carried and the scene that was caused to gain his attention gave her away. He rolled his sleeves up and let out an annoyed sigh as he brought his glass to his lips. “I would, but that would be lying.” He calmly put the glass down on the bar. “Not giving up, huh?”

penelope scoffed and rolled her eyes, “please. we both know that i look great. but it’s cute to see you play hard to get.” she said with a smirk. taking a sip of her own drink she remember the real reason she walked over here. “so who is she?” her tone was calm - something that should scare niko. penelope calm when she should be mad was never a good sign. “and don’t even try to bullshit me saying you don’t know who i’m talking about. that amount of snaps i’ve gotten in the last week of you and her is proof enough.” she then dramatically turned so she was facing the crowd once more, “is she here tonight? i’d love to meet her” her tone was too sweet, too fake.

Steve, not being one for these type of events, awkwardly adjusted the collar of his shirt. Something akin to panic was settling at the bottom of his gut, but he ignored it in favor of having yet another drink. 

“An open bar?” Confusion crossed his features as soon as the young woman approached him. “‘m sorry m’am,” he started, “but I wouldn’t know. ‘m not exactly caught up with these sort of things. I have been payin’ for my drinks for the past thirty minutes, though.” 

penelope eyed the creature of a man before her, he was clearly well built, attractive, and had enough money on him to pay for his own drinks. by all means a catch. so she slipped into her natural state. a tanned, toned leg slipped from her dressed as she crossed it over the other. “well i guess we’ll just have to order another to find out.” she sent him a smirk before raising a finger to signal the bartender. “what did you mean by not caught up with these things? are you like...not from here?” she asked, the tone that indicated she was a little bit ..ditsy in full use while her manicured nail made a gesture that she was referencing space.

penny adjusted herself before making a scene as she crossed the crowded room. people knew better to get in her way and those that didn’t were nicely shoved out of her way. she saddled up next to him, his cologne rushing her senses but she remained calm. “make that two” she said to the bartender, turning to face niko, “what? you hate me that much that you can’t even tell me how hot i look tonight?” @sorcerernikox
