it’s official - mexican churros beat spanish churros hands down. but similar to how so many people still ended up buying and playing kings quest IV, we also cannot keep away from the churros, even if they are at this tourist black hole in madrid.

no pain no gain
a hidden gem on the way to bilbao, the church seen in a distance was built by the knights templar in the 10th century and feels straight out of fantasy story. the only way to approach the church is steep and winding stone path and unfortunately for us, we visited in the middle of a downpour! after some hemming and hawing, hammy made the decision to push through the rain, likely the best one of the trip!

churros quest III (aka the neon pied piper comes to town)
let’s be honest...there’s not much going on in lekeitio. the most exciting thing in town at the time was the traveling churreria and we had to get in on the action. our third churros expedition was not as successful as the first two, leaving g and hammy feeling mildly ill afterwards...no chocolate, no cinnamon, not enough sugar, and too much oil. looks like the new world’s got the old world beat on fried dough...point mexico.

bread laid out with the plates and flatware
you can’t spend a couple days at a fishing village without eating on the docks. we ate at this storied no-frills establishment and had a fantastic meal...albeit apparently on tourist time and completely alone (see background). by the time we finished our meal at 9, the first restaurant guests started to arrive. we were also amused to see that along with the table settings, each setting already had its bread laid out. let’s see now, if the bread was already out when we got there at 8 and the first guests arrive at 9...

darkness abound
this was a very different cathedral from the first two we visited, much more dark and brooding. we had mixed feelings - g was fascinating by the stark and shadowy interior but hammy was equally unsettled and did not spend much time inside. pictured is the church seal displayed in the interior.

an incredible passion for a single fish
we had one of our nice meals in getaria and were throughly impressed by the level of dedication they had to their local fish, turbot. their featured dish for a few decades now, they charcoal grill the fish outside and then proceed to meticulously carve and explain each part of the fish...this is the dorsal side of the fish and is typically sweeter, the fins are bonier but sweet, and on and on. truly impressive how one simple charcoal grilled preparation yields such a range of flavors! equally impressive was our first sighting of vegetables in spain...we do not know how the locals live on so few vegetables!

the greatest ocean view ever
hammy hit one out of the park with this gem of a two-star hotel. a 16th century building in a tiny fishing village on the basque coast, our room had a sweeping view of the ocean and rock formations. then again, there were only like four hotels in this village, so maybe not such an impressive feat after all (but still a fantastic room and view).

the reality of romanticized old towns
old towns in europe are beautiful: the 16th century buildings, pedestrian-friendly setup, and narrow cobblestone roads. that is, until one of those cobblestone roads is the only way to get where you need to, leading to massive traffic jams of two way traffic on long one lane roads. pictured is our car stuck between a cars going the same way as us and cars going the opposite way. good thing my dad first taught me to drive in reverse before driving forward...

couture architecture
whether or not you follow fashion (the latter being true in our case), the balenciaga museum is a fascinating look at the passion of one man for pushing the boundaries of design and his long lasting impact on the fashion industry. equally impressive is the building designed to house this collection. pictured is the museum’s atrium along with the floating 2nd floor and its intricate metalwork patterns. not as impressive but far more entertaining was trying to figure out how to pronounce his last name...you’ll have to look it up.
