FORCED  LAUGHTER  ERUPTS  FROM  MAEVE’S  CHEST .   ‘   a  monkey ,   a  couple  of  rabbits ,   &   a  cat ,   ’   she  recites  the  list  while  shaking  her  head .   the  whole  thing  was  ridiculous ,   for  lack  of  better  terms .   there  were  a  million  different  things  she’d  rather  be  doing ,   but  her  heart  insisted  on  staying  to  help  out .   still ,   that  didn’t  stop  her  from  dreading  it .   quickly  she  ashes  her  cigarette ,   keeping  her  eyes  on  it  as  opposed  to  klaus .   maeve  clears  her  throat  ,   hating  that  he  was  apologizing  for  the  unpredictable .   ‘   there’s  nothing  to  apologize  for ,   ’   she  tells  him ,   her  edges  softening  for  the  moment .   ‘   it’s  not  like  you  guys  knew .   i  mean ,   i’d  much  prefer  sitting  around   &   working  on  the  whole  empathy  thing  for  awhile ,   but  the  world  needs  saving  or  whatever .   ’   there’s  a  quick  smile ,   one  that  radiates  some  sort  of  softness ,   the  only  kind  maeve  could  offer  up  even  in  times  of  sheer  frustration .

Feeling like shit was an understatement. Antonio felt like he was going through hell. No matter how many drugs he’d put into himself, more medicinal than recreational, none of it was helping him feel any better. He felt weak, exhausted, and perpetually craving something to eat. He needed to smoke. So despite his struggle with even walking, with a box of cereal in one hand and a jug of milk in the other, he made his way over to the fire escape and silently sat beside Maeve, setting his food down on the other side. He lit himself a cigarette with a lighter and took a big huff before exhaling. “There’s a shit ton of us and uno mono. We’ll be fine.”  He said before stuffing his face in with the food he brought with him, sweat already drenching his tank top that he had changed into not too long ago.

MAEVE  THINKS  IT  THROUGH  ONCE  MORE .   it  didn’t  matter  how  many  of  them  were  up  against  the  one  chimp ,   it  was  still  nearly  impossible .   ‘   sure ,   but  that  uno  mono  could  be  literally  anywhere .   ’   the  half - smoked  cigarette  is  raised  back  to  her  lips ,   taking  a  drag  before  finally  noticing  the  food   ---   &   how  incredibly  rough  antonio  was  looking .   once  she  exhales   &   lets  the  remaining  smoke  billow  over  blush  colored  petals ,   she  turns  to  face  him ,   visage  filled  with  concern .   ‘   you ,   uh--- --   you  feeling  alright ?   no  offense ,   but  you  don’t  look  so  good .   ’

MAEVE  WASN’T  THE  SAVE  THE  WORLD  TYPE .   while  she  didn’t  care  for  this  new  disease  permeating  throughout  new  york ,   she  didn’t  exactly  ask  to  be  roped  into  it  all .   it  was  too  much  responsibility .   failure  wasn’t  an  option .   thinking  it  through  left  maeve  sitting  in  silence ,   a  cigarette  resting  between  two  fingers ,   dreading  every  single  part  of  the  whole  mission .   there’s  annoyance  spread  on  her  visage ,   her  furrowed  brow  showing  that  inside  she’s  fighting  herself .   while  she  wants  to  be  good  enough  to  head  out   &   save  some  people ,   she’s  not sure  she  can .   although  that  almost  too  big  bleeding  heart  prevents  her  from  backing  out .   now  she  just  sighs ,   taking  notice  that  there  was  someone  near  her .   instead  of  letting  out  every  ounce  of  frustration ,   she  turns  to  look  up  at  them ,   blowing  smoke  from  her  lips .   ‘   do  you  understand  how  hard  it  is  to  find  a  monkey ?   they  can  easily  outsmart  us .   ’

Although she hadn’t lived in the mansion for about a while, she always found herself going back just for visits. However, this visit seemed much longer and to her could have been semi-permanent. Humming softly to herself, she roamed the halls of the mansion, hands buried in her pockets when she noticed the weather changing outside. She watched through the window until she felt a body colliding with hers. She looked Maeve up and down for a moment, crossing her arms over her chest. “Are you sure about that? Those don’t look like the tears of a person who has been binge watching Grey’s Anatomy. Do you need someone to listen to you, I’m all ears.”

THUNDER   &   LIGHTNING  CRASH  OUTSIDE .   the  anger  of  being  stopped  in  her  tracks  because  she  wasn’t  careful  enough  was  enough  to  anger  her .   her  body  shudders  as  she  tries  to  push  the  tears  away ,   but  it’s  useless .   once  the  floodgates  are  opened ,   they  take  forever  to  close .   maeve  angrily  blinks  away  her  tears ,   trying  to  steady  herself   &   calm  down .   ‘   yeah ,   i’m  sure ,   ’   she  lies  once  again .   she  knows  abigail  can  see  through  her  lies   ---   anyone  could  at  this  point   ---   so  she  doesn’t  understand  why  she  can’t  stop  lying  about  it ,   as  if  being  furious  wasn’t  a  common  emotion .   she  takes  a  deep  breath  before  wiping  her  cheeks ,   rolling  her  eyes  as  she  stands  still .   instead  of  going  into  a  long  rant  about  the  medical  drama ,   she  allows  herself  to  open  up  for  a  moment .   quietly ,    she  says ,   ‘   he’s  such  an  asshole .   still .   ’

“I know, but there’s nothing you need to worry about right now, I’m fine, I promise,” Klaus tried to reassure Maeve, knowing full well that she knew he was lying, and really he wouldn’t believe himself either right now. He watched her argue again that they’d go out for coffee, nothing else, and was about to get it himself, when she moved to get the bottle. He didn’t want to, not really, but much like the pills he still kept around, he felt safer knowing that he had the option at least. 

He tried his best not to let his gaze wander around the mansion on their way out, holding onto Maeve tightly to keep him grounded and keep the walls up as she guided him outside and to her car. He took a shaky breath once they were outside, trying to calm himself so he wouldn’t further worry his little sister, but it was hard. Why now. Why today? 

“I know,” Klaus repeated himself from earlier when Maeve stopped him in front of her car. “I know… Can we just go please? Get some coffee and.. I’ll explain to you there?”

ALL  THE  REASSURING  IN  THE  WORLD  WOULDN’T  HELP  THIS  SITUATION .   maeve  tried  her  best  not  to  worry ,   but  klaus  looked  as  if   .   .   .   well ,   he’d  literally  seen  a  ghost .   she  doesn’t  take  that  very  lightly ,   not  when  he  wore  that  expression .   she  takes  a  deep  breath  as  she  lets  her  hand  slip  from  his  arm ,   nodding  as  she  steps  away ,   trailing  her  way  over  to  the  drivers  side  to  get  in   &   get  him  far  away  from  the  mansion .

the  entire  drive  she  keeps  the  music  on  with  the  volume  down  low  as  she  rapidly  smokes  a  cigarette ,   occasionally  peeking  over  at  her  brother  to  make  sure  he  was  still  there ,   acting  as  if  he  could’ve  vanished  like  a  few  of their  siblings .   once  they  arrive  at  the  familiar  diner ,   the  one  from  their  childhood ,   she  puts  in  the  car  in  park   &   leans  over ,   slipping  a  flask  out  of  the  glove  compartment ,   blatantly  ignoring  the  bottle  of  whiskey  she  had  stashed  in  the  backseat .   she  knows  they  can’t  go  anywhere  with  that .   instead  she  shows  him  the  flask  before  slipping  it  in  her  purse .   ‘   you  ready ?   ’   she  asks ,   relaxing  a  bit  before  climbing  out  of  the  car .   it  was  on  his  time ,   whatever  klaus’s  current  state  was ,   she  would  go  at  his  pace .   ‘   c’mon ,   there’s  nothing  some  black  coffee   &   a  few  jelly  donuts  can’t  fix .   ’   that  was  definitely  not  the  truth ,   but  she  was  trying  to  lighten  the  atmosphere ,   knowing  it’d  come  crashing  back  down  in  just  a  few  minutes  anyway .

Piper didn’t like to cry.  She tried to be strong, especially around her more powerful siblings.  Maybe it was to make up for her, as she considered it, less impressive power.  Still, she couldn’t help the tear that rolled down her cheek, which she immediately wiped away.  “We have to be enough.”  She muttered again, though the slight tremble in her voice made it obvious that even she wasn’t completely confident in her family.  There were just too many factors to something like this, and no matter what they did, there was no way to tell if they were doing the right thing or not.  “I don’t care if we get yelled at or not.  I care about all the people we need to save.”

THE  ONE  TEAR  CAUSES  MAEVE’S  HEART  TO  BREAK .   looking  out  for  her  siblings  was  the  only  good  part  of  being  home   ---   making  them  feel  safe ,   secure ,   happy ,   less  anxious .   she  couldn’t  do  any  of  that  if  the  other  was  crying .   ‘   pipes   .   .   .   ’   she  sighs ,   moving  closer  to  put  a  hand  on  the  girls  shoulder .   there’s  no  delicate  way  to  say  that  maeve’s  stomach  was  tied  in  knots  over  the  situation .   there’s  no  way  to  tell  her  that  maeve  doesn’t  know  if  they  can  do  it .   ‘   look ,   if  anyone  can  do  it ,   it’s  us ,   right ?   ’   her  hand  gently  squeezes  her  shoulder .   she’s  trying  her  best  to  be  encouraging ,   even  while  piper’s  falling  apart .   ‘   we’ll  do  what  we  can ,   but  you  can’t  worry  this  hard in  the  meantime .   if  we’re  going  to  save  those  people ,   we  need  a  plan .   ’   there’s  a  glimmer  of  hope  in  her  oceanic  hues ,   frowning  as  she  looks  at  her  sister .   if  anything ,   she’s  just  happy  that  at  least  one  of  her  siblings  cares  this  deeply .   ‘   no  more  crying  until  there’s  actually  something  to  cry  over ,   alright ?   ’

“Does it…  Does it ever get to you?”  Piper muttered, just barely loud enough for the person across from her to hear it.  It was a lot of pressure for an eighteen year old to handle, knowing that the fate of the world rested partially on her shoulders.  She normally tried to be optimistic, but she couldn’t help but wonder if they were strong enough.  Obviously she knew that her siblings were powerful, but is it enough to save the world?  “I mean…  What if we’re not enough?  What if we don’t save the world?”  She’d only just started college, the next chapter in her life.  She didn’t want to give that up.

IT  WAS  CONSTANTLY  IN  THE  BACK  OF  HER  MIND .   the  news  hadn’t  sunk  in  completely  yet   &   what  has  was  the  source  of  needing  to  numb  herself  to  keep  sane .   lip  purse  as  she  shrugs  at  her  little  sister ,   feeling  a  sharp  pang  of  guilt .   she  was  younger  than  most ,   their  last  age  group  to  be  roped  into  this  messy  existence   &   the  now  defunct  academy .   ‘   if  we’re  not  enough  then  we’re  not  enough ,   ’   she  speaks  the  opposite  of  everything  their  father  taught  them .   if  they  couldn’t  beat  this  thing ,   they  weren’t  failures .   if  they  couldn’t  beat  this  thing ,   at  least  it  was  one  of  their  own  siblings  who  started  it   &   took  them  down  instead  of  something  they  couldn’t  foresee .   there’s  a  soft  smirk  on  her  face  as  she  thinks  it  all  through .   trying  not  to  let  her  own  anxieties  show  was  harder  than  she  thought ,    but  still  she  lets  a  small  amount  of  softness  through  for  good  measure .   ‘    if  we  don’t  save  the  world  at  least  we  won’t  get  yelled  at  for  it .   ’

SOMETIMES  IT  WAS  TOO  MUCH  TO  HANDLE .   the  more  maeve  drowned  herself  in  bottles  of  whiskey ,   vodka ,    &   whatever  else  she  could  find ,   the  more  vulnerable  she  became ,   especially  here  in  this  stupid  mansion  she  once  was  forced  to  call  home .   it  wasn’t  often  that  maeve  fell  to  pieces ,   but  it  seemed  like  one  bad  thing  after  another .   for  the  most  part ,   she  remained  hopeful  that  they  could  beat  this  thing .   staying  strong ,   making  jokes ,   meticulously  planning ,   acting  as  the  good  sister .   it  all  came  crashing  down  from  one  encounter  with  reggie .   with  all  of  her  accomplishments ,   all  of  her  powers ,   she  was  still  a  letdown .   perhaps  it’s  her  attitude  towards  the  academy ,   getting  far  away  from  them ,   or  not  using  her  powers  as  necessary .   whatever  it  was ,   she  was  still  a  failure  in  their  fathers  eyes .   all  the  experimenting ,   the  poking   &   proding ,   all  came  back  to  her .   it  takes  a  lot  to  break  the  otherwise  strong  woman ,   but  her  father  seemed  to  be  the  one  thing  that  got  to  her  without  a  fighting  chance .   the  blonde  slams  his  door  shut  behind  her ,   rattling  the  wall  before  rushing  to  her  bedroom .   her  breath  hitches  in  her  throat ,   all  the  while  hiding  her  face   &   keeping  her  head  down .   without  time  to  think  about  it ,   the  weather  outside  turns  dark   &   gloomy   ---   rain  crashes  down  on  a  rather  bright   &   sunny  day .   it’s  the  one  thing  she  could  do  without  causing  any  damage  to  anyone  or  anything .   bumping  into  the  other  was  a  mistake  she  was  not  ready  to  deal  with .   ‘   i  watched  too  much  grey’s  anatomy ,   ’   she  lies ,   her  voice  sounding  shakier  than  ever .   ‘   it’s  all  good .   ’
