This is the story of my first time hiring a travel photographer
Visiting Lisbon can be overwhelming for those of use who like a good travel photo. Experiencing the entire city both in front of and behind the camera would take some time. For example, go to google maps Lisbon and search “miradouro.” This means “view point.” This simple search shows you over a dozen different view points where you can overlook the city!
Besides these miradouros, there are many other places in Lisbon to get priceless travel photos. So, how can I snag amazing photos without planning my whole trip around it? Hire someone to take photos during a small part of your trip! This being the case, I chose to hire a travel photographer in Lisbon! Here’s my story of hiring a travel photographer.
All of the photos in this post were taken by Flavio at Lisbon Experience.
First, let’s jump into the whos, hows, and whys of hiring a travel photographer:
Who – Personally, I chose Lisbon Experience. Check out their instagram here! I had a great experience with them. Accordingly, this post will be a review of a good experience. However, this post is NOT sponsored! I booked this travel photography experience with my own money.
Finding Travel Photographers – I suggest that you find a photographer who has good reviews. Then check their instagram to see if you like their library there.
How – I think that airbnb experiences is a great place to find local photographers. That’s how I found the photographer that I booked. What’s more, I’ve found other photographers that I plan to book for Christmas time.
If you sign up for Airbnb with my link you will get $15 to use toward an experience worth $50 or more! Plus $40 off your home booking. So you can go to Lisbon and save on both your photographer and accommodation!
Why – If for no other reason, to give my instagram husband a rest! Hiring a travel photographer ensures that you’ll get loads of good photos of you in front of the camera, so that you can just enjoy the rest of your trip behind the camera. On top of that, it’s great to do it near the beginning of your trip to get that photo itch out of the way.
Why pt. 2 – With the photoshoot that I booked, it was also like a private tour of the city! Flavio, the photographer, told me all about the history of the places where we took photos. By hiring a travel photographer, you can get a local artist’s point of view on the city both through their words and their art!
#gallery-0-21 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-21 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Let’s get into the story
We met during sunrise in the Praça do Comércio, a lively square only just awaking at this time. It’s surrounded on three sides by yellow walls built atop marbled arches which seem to support the whole square. Its fourth side is met by glistening water, the Tagus river. First, my husband and I met Flavio who just before had amusingly messaged me “Are you wearing a green dress?” Then we walked through both the smaller archways (above) and THE Rua Augusta Arch (above). Both being extremely mesmerizing in the morning light. Plus the lack of other early birds made the experience incredible!
#gallery-0-22 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-22 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-22 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-22 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Next we took off up hill following the tram line. Every single one of the photos above are photos that I saw online and I wanted to take myself. For this reason, I’m SO thankful for the flexibility and assurance that hiring a travel photographer gives you.
The trollies in Lisbon are a living symbol of the city. It’s such an amazing experience to be almost ran over by one! But the photos are worth it. (See above!) I’ll be writing a post soon detailing all of the places across the city where I saw picturesque and typical trolly scenes. Both on and off this tour. Stay tuned!
#gallery-0-23 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-23 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
See some of my travel photography on my blog! For example: Gorgeous Cinque Terre Photos to Stir your Traveler Heart
My favorite part about hiring a travel photographer is that you can have a personalized tour of the city.I got to take so many photos surrounded by beautiful bougainvillea blooms, the most typical flower of Lisbon! My ‘thing’ is definitely flowers, and Flavio played this up and showed me all of the spots with beautiful blooms! As you can see above!
#gallery-0-24 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-24 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Also one of my favorite things about this experience, Flavio showed us many places that we never would have found on our own. The three photos above are examples of this. When you book tours with local travel photographers who know the city well, they can give you an amazing experience. In addition to some amazing photos! It’s also worth mentioning that we never had to wait for someone else to finish taking photos. Everywhere we went it felt like it was just us!
#gallery-0-25 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-25 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-25 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-25 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
All in all, would I recommend hiring a travel photographer?
Well, let’s add this up. Firstly, hiring a travel photographer relieves the headache of trying to snag those ‘perfect’ travel photos. It gives instagram husbands a break! Add the fact that some travel photographers offer the experience of a tour as well. So you’re not just getting photos, you’re getting an experience. And a personalized experience at that! While travel photographers aren’t free, I think it’s important to support local artists when traveling.
So, should you hire a travel photographer? My advice is this: compare your options to your budget.
First, check your options. For example, search on Airbnb Experiences “travel photographer + (city).” You’ll see all of the travel photography experiences available and their prices!
Next, ask yourself, ‘are those prices inside my budget?’ For me that answer was yes. My travel photography tour in Lisbon cost $56 USD. If you’re going to Lisbon, hiring a travel photographer is affordable! However, in more expensive cities like Paris and London prices range between $75-$95. So just check your options and your budget! And then either way, have happy travels!
If you sign up for Airbnb with my link you will get $15 to use toward an experience worth $50 or more! Plus $40 off your home booking. So you can go to Lisbon and save on both your photographer and accommodation!
Items that I used on my trip to Portugal:
Plane-ready travel kit. I have been using mine for 3 years!
Maybe it’s just the American in me, but I use Rick Steves everywhere I go. They’re some of the best guides in my opinion! Or just watch them on youtube!

The Perfect Lake Como Day Trip – What to See and Do in Lake Como
Located deep within the Italian Alps and almost bordering Switzerland, Lake Como is a uniquely picturesque destination. Add colorful, medieval aged architecture and you’ve got the city of Como, reflecting beautifully off of the blue waters. Como is the namesake city of Lake Como in North-Western Italy, located in the Lombardy region. (Also known as The lake Region). What’s more, Lake Como is only about 2 hours from Milan. So what are you waiting for? Get inspired and plan your own Lake Como Day Trip!
Piazza Cavour
Getting to Lake Como
Milan is the largest Italian city near Lake Como. Additionally, it is the most popular home base for any Lake Como Day Trip. Let’s discuss how to get to Como from Milan.
Only a 2 hour train ride separates Milan and Lake Como . TRENORD is the regional and suburban railway system serving the Lombardy region. Additionally, TRENITALIA is Italy’s national railway company and is one option to be used. For my personal Lake Como day trip I used Trenord because I was staying in Saronno and it was only €3,20!
First, in the train station, approach the TrenItalia ticket machine, Trenord ticket machine, or the ticket office. Second, request a ticket on the regional line to Como. With Trenord it will cost €7,20. Get off at Como S. Giovanni or Como Nord Lago, depending on where you want to begin your Lake Como Day Trip. Both stations are located inside the city of Como and near the lake and other sights. Now, find your platform and catch your train! Tip: look up the train schedule and arrive about 30 minutes before your preferred departure to buy the tickets.
The View from “Life Electric”
What to Do During your Lake Como Day Trip
Grab Rick Steve’s guide to the lake district of Italy! Including Lake Como!
Visit the Lake
Explore Medieval Streets and Piazzas
Visit Brunate by Funicular – “The Balcony of the Alps” with Art Nouveau villas and incredible views
1. The Lake
The first thing to do, quite obviously, is run to the lake! Soak in the sunlight reflecting off the waters and the sounds of people enjoying the lakefront.
Take a Boat to Other Lake Towns
There is one main boat service that offers frequent departures from Como. This boat stops at all of the cities located on the lake. Therefore, you can treat it as a ‘hop-on-hop-off boat’ and hop from city to city. There are two ‘zones’ available for purchase, the smaller of the two also being the cheapest. Keep in mind that the larger zone may be more difficult to discover on just one Lake Como day trip.
Life Electric
First and foremost, when visiting the lake you will notice a huge abstract sculpture in the middle of the waters and surrounded by visitors. Life Electric is a modern sculpture that you can visit by way of a very long pier. It was installed by Studio Libeskind in 2015. It’s meaning is to pay tribute the famous scientist Alessandro Volta, who is from Como. In fact, it is the first contemporary work ever to be installed in Como!
You can see the funicular railway linking Como and Brunate?
Want more photography of Italy? Check out my previous photo collection: Gorgeous Cinque Terre Photos to Stir your Traveler Heart
Tempio Voltiano
This museum is another site dedicated to Alessandro Volta! Offering the best views of the lake and the best place to take them in is Tempio Voitlano. To illistrate, visit on any sunny day (or cloudy one for that matter). You can count on any number of people, old and young, enjoying time beside this museum near the water. Perhaps even other tourists like us on a Lake Como Day Trip!
2. Explore Medieval Streets
Via Vitani
Via Vitani is the most intact Medieval aged street in Como remaining today. Consequently, it is an almost perfect representation of what a medieval street in Como would have looked like. Do you want to explore Como’s rich history during your Lake Como day trip? Thankfully, the tourism office has created a medieval walking tour which is posted on maps all around town.

Piazza San Fedele and Ubik Librerie
This beautiful Piazza bustles as hungry tourists and locals chose it’s cafes for their lunches with a view. That is, the view of the Basilica de San Fedele! Moreover, this piazza boasts the Ubik Librerie book store. As for the book store, it’s located in one of the oldest standing buildings in Como! Therefore, Piazza S. Fedele can’t be missed on any Lake Como day trip. Of course for book nerds, the book store is a must stop destination.
View of Piazza San Fedele from Ubik Library
Ubik Library on the Right!
Piazza Cavour
Similarly to Piazza San Fedele, Piazza Cavour is an unmissable sight. Together with gelato shops, terrace restaurants, bright colored buildings, and a view of the lake, this might be my favorite stop on my Lake Como day trip.
Basilica Cattedrale Di Como (Como Cathedral)
The tourism office is located in a small building extending from the Como Cathedral. However, I didn’t go inside the church. For my clothing did not cover my legs or arms. In fact, most churches in Italy have a dress code. With this in mind, I encourage you to bring a scarf to wrap around your shoulders if you want to enter in the summer time!
More Ideas for your Lake Como Day Trip:
Walk by the ancient medieval walls that still stand on the opposite side of town from the Lake.
Visit the various markets offered by Como. Check schedules here!
Get 2 free audiobooks for the plane ride home!
3. Brunate – “The Balcony of the Alps”
On top of Como lies a community for the wealthy. Considering it’s elaborate Art Nouveau villas and incredible views, Brunate is defiantly worth a stop on your Lake Como Day Trip. In order to explore the mountain top community, take the Funicular Como-Brunate to the top.
Furthermore, you can chose to take a half hour walk or shuttle to an amazing lighthouse. The Faro Voltiano light house is also dedicated to the city’s famous scientist Alessandro Volta (just as the Life Electric installation and Tempio Voltiano museum).
Can you see the Villa on top of the mountain?
What do you think? Maybe you will need more than just a one day Lake Como trip. Perhaps two or three? Let me know in the comments!

The Perfect Lake Como Day Trip - What to See and Do in Como! #LakeComo #DayTrip #Europe #Travelblog #Italy #travelphotography #Como The Perfect Lake Como Day Trip – What to See and Do in Lake Como Located deep within the Italian Alps and almost bordering Switzerland, …
Caution: This article contains extremely alluring Cinque Terre Photos, causing some to buy plane tickets to Italy almost immediately after viewing.
The Cinque Terre, or the five lands, are small, colorful villages built on cliffs in the Italian Riviera. The people of the Cinque Terre have been fishermen and vineyard workers for hundreds of years, dating back to the 11th century. Now, they are very popular with tourists. In the paradise of Italy’s Liguria region, the locals of the Cinque Terre have found one of the world’s most beautiful spots to live in. Hence my full camera roll of Cinque Terre photos.
Each village has it’s own distinct personality. Thankfully, traveling between the cities is easy and cheap with a Cinque Terre Card. However, none of the villages allow car traffic. So let the sound of the Mediterranean’s waves wash over you and find the peace that the Cinque Terre offers.
I have created a collection of my favorite Cinque Terre photos that I’ve taken during my travels. All in the hopes of inspiring you to visit these villages. So, dive into these Cinque Terre photos with a traveler’s heart. Time to spark some wanderlust!
Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore is the first stop on the train from La Spezia. After the train takes you through the dark tunnel, you will emerge with a view of the sparkling Mediterannean sea. Just over the cliffs is Riomaggiore, one of the most commonly shown villages in Cinque Terre photos. Thankfully for me, it was a beautiful day and my camera’s SD card had plenty of room for travel photography.
Thinking more French Riviera style? Read my post: 15 Things to do in Marseille, France
Manarola
Manarola has the most amazing sunsets of all the villages. The sun splashes it’s warmth on the colorful facades of the village and sets them alight. Plus you can view the sunset from the next cliff over. This is the best place to get views of Manarola. There are also places to view the surrounding villages like Corniglia (the next stop on our journey through my Cinque Terre Photos)!
Want more Italy? Read my post about How to see the best of Tuscany on a Time Budget!
Corniglia
Most people say that Corniglia’s best views are from the surrounding trails and villages. It is the smallest of the five villages of Cinque Terre. While it doesn’t have a seaport, you can find refreshment in the wine being made on the mountainsides surrounding Corniglia!
