Chris Evans as Steve Rogers The Avengers
Bucky knew this must be hard for Steve, for years he thought Bucky was dead and now here he was. Though he didn't trust his mind half the time, no matter how many times they tested him in Wakanda, to make sure everything was gone. Using the trigger words and it didn't evoke a response. But part of him thought maybe it was more than that, that one day he would switch. Every day was a battle to maintain a calm composure, to get through the day.
He had Steve though, and he was doing his best to look out Bucky. But he could see how much he was struggling as well, that this was something new to navigate. That there were questions he was always avoiding to ask. He wasn't the same Bucky he used to know, neither of them were the same. They had the weight of war of their shoulders.
""Wakanda was nice." Bucky responded, leaning back in his chair for a moment, his mind flickering back to those memories. He knew he had to open up more and say more than 'it was nice'. "It was calm, you know? First time in a century I felt calm and at peace. Being back here it's -- it's a lot to handle. The noise, the people. Everything's so overwhelming, Wakanda was quiet, I had my space. I was accepted. Now it's just -- I don't know what people would think of me out there. The infamous Winter Soldier that now everyone knows about. Knows the man behind the mask. Just because the President pardons you, doesn't mean the rest of the world thinks you're safe."
He chuckles, but only because he couldn't have said it any better himself. There was always that—it was one thing to trust yourself, and it was another to trust other people. People were unpredictable, and if they felt as if Bucky didn't deserve to be here, they would come after him all the same. He had learned that the hard way.
Bucky had never asked for any of that. It was unfair for the world to view him that way. Sometimes Steve finds himself wrestling with the idea that if this was anyone else but Bucky, if he would have acted differently. On one hand, he hopes he'd give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but in his field…
He shakes his head as if to shake the thought away altogether before resuming and tuning back into the conversation. "When I came out of the ice, I had no one," Steve responds in a softer tone. "Everyone was dead except 'Peg. I heard she was sick, didn't want to confuse her much. Tony and I became friends of sorts, but I spent most of my time back at my apartment or riding the subway, sketching the city, trying to get reacquainted with everything." He sighs. "Even to this day, I feel out of place, but you gotta move on, take each day as it comes."
@rejectory ; ❛ i did call. twice. ❜ - sam
He's about to protest when Sam reminds him that he did call twice over. To that, he doesn't really have much to say. He rarely follows through with his commitments, but this time he had evidently dropped the ball. The recent fights had been at the forefront of his mind, and he had been spending more time than not at the group therapy sessions. Running them and helping others feel good was almost the perfect way to take his mind off of his own transgressions.
He chews at the inside of his cheek a little before he hangs his head. "I'm here now, though. What do you need me to do?"
bucky starter call @ofsentinel
"Don't look at me like that." Bucky commented as he noticed his friend staring at him, he had noticed it more and more recently. The looks Steve would give when Bucky was quiet, as though trying to figure out what was going on his head. "My shrink looks at me like that, you and her should join forces." He half joked as he ate his food, reaching for the beer he had open. "You know you can just ask questions if you want, it's like you're always hesitant to. Like I'm going to snap."
As happy as Steve finds himself with their reunion, it's evident that it's evoked feelings he wasn't exactly prepared for. James, for the longest time, felt like a distant memory, just like his father, just like his mother, just like all the other comrades and friends and family he had lost. Having him enter his life again was confusing. A mission completed of sorts; Bucky had looked out for him when he was a kid, he figured now it's his turn to return the favor.
It was a strange position to be in, considering he was still figuring out how to navigate their relationship now that the dynamic had shifted so much. To his words, Steve's brows knit together, contemplating the next words carefully. Bucky had always been capable, but even he sees it in his expression; it's as if he's unsure of some things about himself, and that's understandable. He had gone through hell and back.
"How was Wakanda?" He starts there. It's the least heavy question of all the ones swirling around in his head, but it could possibly open up the floor for deeper ones. "I don't think you ever told me how it went there after I dropped you off."
how do you drive this thing again?
"Oh God no. No sugar." Tony says as he moves to take a seat at the kitchen island. Hot cocoa wouldn't be his first choice of beverage at three am, but hell– why not. Still, it doesn't keep him from eyeing the wet bar on the other end of the room for a few seconds.
"You ever dealt with a kid experiencing sugar rush after eating sugary food? Pepper says I'm even worse."
⎯⎯⎯⎯ "Thanks for confirming you're a child, I did have my suspicions." The smirk doesn't leave Steve's features as he says it. In fact, he's rather proud of the jest comeback. He sips at his own drink as he prepares Tony's. "How are Pepper and Morgan? And you... doing okay?"
@stcrk ; ❛ you always see the good in people. even me. ❜
⎯⎯⎯⎯ "You say, 'even me' as if you don't have any good to give." Which was untrue. There was the potential for good in everyone, as much as the potential for evil. Sure, his words are a little heavy and they hold some weight. Steve knows as good as he is at boosting morale, the Avengers tower is a vast difference from war trenches. He also knows a billionaire's worldview was different than that of the average working-class man. He clears his throat, "We're all just doing the best we can... I may not always agree but I value that you come to the conclusions you do because you are seeking to do good overall." Even if it looked very different on Steve, he did appreciate it. Tony had a brilliant mind, much like his father. With talent and knowledge like that, he could turn the world on its head. He nearly had. But he found his way back. "You are a good man. Not perfect, but who is?"
@stcrk ; “So this is what the famous Captain America is like behind closed doors.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯ His had his on his mug, stabilising it as he stirs and he can't help but let a soft chuckle leave his lips the moment he hears Tony behind him. He rolls his eyes and turned to him as he reached to turn the kettle back on. "Y'know, if you wanted cocoa you can justask mee, metal man." Steve teases, "Do you take sugar?"

"Well at best we walk into a kill box.... At worst we're enemies of the state again." Bucky replied with a shrugg of his shoulders. He almost wanted to laugh at how insane it sounded but it was what their life was at this point. It was normal. "Swipe.... Floor by floor." He sigh, back to work again. "Ground level to roof....!"
⎯⎯⎯⎯ "Nothing I've ever been worried about," Steve commented, even though he's older now the same principles he held as a young man in Brooklyn remained the same. It does bring him comfort to look to his right and see Bucky there by his side all the same, and there's further comfort in the knowledge that still, he's never been alone in his quests. "Agreed," Steve says finally. "I'll take the front entrance, you take the side, and we meet in the middle, got it?"
