“Oh, I know I’m a great captain. I know how to direct a team and make them play to their fullest. But I do have to admit that Gray’s a better player than I am. That’s why the directors want to put him as a co-captain. Charlotte is not thrilled,” he said with a soft laugh. “But they have the money, so they pressure her.”

Will smiled. “I’m sure you’ll beat them all. I don’t know much about it, but I think you have a really good technique.” 

When Jem removed the hand over his eyes, an eyelash fell to his cheek. Without thinking much about, Will removed his glove to brush it away. He only realised he had probably stepped over a line when he felt the contact with Jem’s soft skin.

“Sorry,” he said quickly, his hand dropping. “An eyelash.”

“There’re more to leading a team than just talent.” Jem agreed. “Perhaps you just have to show the directors the error of their ways. Though between you and Charlotte, I’m sure you could make it work if you had to.”

He kicked the tip of his pick against the ground. “Thank you. But technique isn’t enough to score point. The judges want art, feeling, properly landed jumps.” He shook his head and laughed.

He froze at the sudden warmth on his cheek and just as suddenly, it was removed. He fought back the impulse to touch the spot with his hand. 

“It’s fine.” He hoped Will couldn’t hear his quickening heartbeat as loudly as he could. “Thanks.”

“Well, at least I apologise for the whole deal with the fight,” Will smiled sheepishly. “She stayed the night with Blackthorn in the end. I just left because I wasn’t really feeling like partying. Did you have a good night at least?”

Will blinked at Jem’s surprise. “Tatti,” he replied. “She says that you can’t stand me.” He laughed, self-conscious. “You’d have a point if you did. I can be quite obnoxious and annoying. And I keep showing up and expecting you’ll like me just because I keep pestering you.”

And then a chill ran down his spine, the way it always did when a demon was closer. Will sighed and stood up. “I… I probably should go…”

“Oh.” Jem ducked his head, hiding the quick upward twitch of his lips. They hadn’t slept together! “It’s fine. Don’t worry.” 

He took a spot next to Will on the couch. “It was uneventful. I fell asleep partway through the movie.”

He shook his head vehemently. “Tatiana doesn’t know me very well at all. It must have been misguided speculation on her part.” He took a deep breath. “I apologize if that’s how it seems. I appreciate your effort. I’m just...” He laughed. “quiet, for lack of a better word. I don’t really know what to do with any sort of attention.”

He turned to look out the window as his pearl pulsed warm against his skin. “Of course.” He stood to lead Will to the door. “Feel free to drop by any time.” He offered a distracted grin.

Will waved back at Charlotte and the other and guided Jem to the clan’s building.

He bit his lip at Jem’s question. Then he ran a hand through his hair with a sigh, before answering: “We’re hunting Peter and his group down,” he explained. “I wasn’t the only complicated victim. They’ve been killing mundanes without a care, just for fun. And they’ve been turning kids into subjugates. Raphael decided to end them before the Clave involves themselves in it.”

Will thought about hiding the rest of the matter, but there was no way he was going to keep more secret from Jem. “Raphael took me in. He’s the leader of the clan and that’s why I obey him… But Peter is my sire. So Raphael needs me to track Peter’s group.”

Jem shook his head. “Of course he does.” He frowned. “Nothing’s ever simple and safe when it comes to you, is it.” 

He balanced both hands on top of his cane and stared at Will, brow furrowed. “I know this is a vampire matter, and that you shouldn’t be telling me any of this. But promise me, that if you need help, you’ll call us in.”

He stepped up to the young vampire and gripped his upper arm. “Promise me, Will. Vampire or not, we still protect our own.”

Magnus laughed. “He’s one of my best friends, so of course I’m going to introduce myself as such.”

Magnus smiled and nodded. “I designed the entire place myself. I studied interior design after doing a couple of terms at fashion design, so I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted the place to be like… I’m glad you like it, Jem. Will doesn’t bring many of his dates here.”

Will shot Magnus a grin. “It’s because this one’s important. You know this really pretty kindergarten teacher I’ve been talking to you about,” Will explained Magnus. He looked at Jem and winked an eye at him.

“It’s incredible.” Jem smiled. “You have a definite talent. I think you’ve reset my standard for clubs everywhere.”

He turned to Will and raised an eyebrow.

“I didn’t realize my reputation proceeded me.” Jem teased Will with a gentle nudge. “I would’ve dressed up more for the part.”

@ofcursesandsins: SOFI. Sofi oh my goodness, we’ve been friends for so so long. We’ve had the craziest threads and I’ve loved each and every one of them. You’re my angst partner for life and I can’t wait to see what more we get to do together. Your Will was the first one I really had threads with and I adore the way you write him.

@ofsilvereyesandlosttime: Cindy, you know that I absolutely adore you! You were the first person to actually start a thread with me and it’s all just gone uphill from there. I love how we can spend hours in each others’ messages plotting whatever angsty new thread we’ve come up with. You’re such a wonderful writer and your Jem will always have a special place in my heart!

@darahdemonis / @hathxway: Sunny, you’re fantastic. I love that I can hop on Skype and message you about a plot and we can spend literally hours planning it out to the very last detail. I love your Magnus and your Rose (my muses love them, too) and all of the amazing threads we’ve had in the past. You’re such a sweet person and I love that I can call you a friend!

I can always count on you to be there for me and to make me laugh when I need it most; in the short time we’ve known each other you’ve become a wonderful friend and I adore you.

Will nodded. “Yeah, I guess the Lightwoods and I have a good game. We’ve been playing together for years, but it’s mostly thanks to them, you know. They’re really coordinated and in synch. It’s so creepy sometimes,” Will said with a laugh.

He ran a hand through his hair, disheveling even more. “I wouldn’t say we’re ready, no. We’re mostly there, but the whole thing with Gray is that he’s an arrogant arse. He’s on our starting line because he’s the best player on the team, but he doesn’t know how to play a team sport. So it’s always difficult with him… And the bosses want to make him my co-captain, which would definitely send this team to shit.”

He sighed and shook his head. “I’m sorry. I keep complaining about him… How’s your routine? When does your competition start?”

“Do give yourself a little credit, Captain.” Jem smiled. “You definitely did something to earn your title.”

Jem wanted to reach out and brush the dark hair from Will’s eyes, but he restrained himself, surprised at the feeling. That’s not something you just do for someone you’ve barely known for a few days.

“That’s fine.” He shook his head. “Everyone needs to vent now and again.”

He bit his bottom lip. “The first competition is in a month and I have my routine memorized, it’s just doing it...” He ran a gloved hand over his eyes. “I’ve got a long month ahead of me.”

“It’s alright,” Will said, as he watched Jem run around to fetch a first aids kit.

He watched Jem carefully taking care of his wound and smiled. “You’re really caring. You remind me of a friend, in a sense. He’s always taking care of me,” he said with a small laugh.

When Jem was finished, Will thanks him and picked up his bag. “I brought you your notes,” he said. “That’s why am I here. Soph said you forgot them at Gabriel’s and she promised to bring them, but she had to work, so here I am,” he explained. 

He ran a hand through his hair. “I also brought you breakfast. Pastries, that is. My favourite ones, from my favourite place.” He shrugged. “I wanted to apologise for that awkward situation yesterday. I basically barged into the room and proceeded to have a fight with Tatti in front of you. Also I’m sorry about the way Tatti behaves around you. She has the feeling that you hate us or something.”

“He sounds like a great friend.” Jem smiled a bit absentmindedly. He finished disinfecting the cut and wrapped a white bandage around it.

“Well, if it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have gotten scratched.” He snorted. “It’s the least I can do.”

He vaguely remembered leaving his notes on Gabriel’s desk.

“Thanks. I hadn’t even noticed.” Jem smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. He took his notes and placed them on his coffee table.

“Oh, that’s very kind of you.” His eyes widened as they met Will’s. “But there’s really nothing to apologize for. Anyone could’ve made that mistake. The room anyway.” His expression darkened at the memory.

“Hate you?” He visibly flinched back. “What gave you that idea?”

“I merely came to say hello,” Will started, slowly, when the rest calmed down. “Raphael asked me to take care of some matters with him.”

“Surely we can help…”

“It is a vampire matter, Charlotte. We should be able to solve them within our community,” he explained. It was the strangest and saddest thing, having to draw a line between his family and him.

“I understand,” Charlotte replied with a nod.

“I will come tomorrow night to have a longer chat,” he assured them and then turned to Jem. “Would you like to accompany me home?”

“Of course.” Jem stepped to Will’s side, right where he was supposed to be.

“What’s going on in... your community?” He had to stop his tongue from forming the word ‘our’. “I assume everything’s not okay if something needs to be solved.”

He took Will’s arm and waved back at Charlotte. She smiled and waved back.

The bartender winked an eye at them and left to call Magnus.

Will turned to Jem and couldn’t help a smile. “I gather that was strong, Jem?” he asked with a quiet laugh. “Do you have any preferred drink?”

“I personally make some excellente screwdrivers, if I say so myself,” a voice said behind Will.

Will turned around to find a man with dark skin wearing a shimmering blue pant suit and rainbow hair, matching his rainbow make up. Will smiled  at him. “Magnus!”

“Hello, Will. And…”

“Jem. He’s my date tonight,” Will said with a wide grin.

Magnus laughed. “I figured as much,” he replied, then he turned to Jem. “Nice to meet you, Jem. I’m Magnus Bane, Will’s friend and owner of Pandemonium,” he introduced himself and extended a hand to shake Jem’s.

The club-owner’s outfit definitely matched the club’s theme.

“Pleasure’s all mine.” Jem took Magnus’ hand. “Wow, I need to find someone who’ll introduce themselves as ‘Jem’s friend’.” He joked.

“This is an amazing club.” He gestured around them. “Did you design it all yourself?”

The music seemed affect the bar area less. The music was only a dull throb in Jem’s lungs, and he didn’t have to raise his voice to be heard. He wasn’t quite sure if this was due to creative engineering or if Magnus simply exuded a more calming aura around him.

When Will’s group turn passed, Will stood outside the rink, watching the next groups. He was easily distracted by Jem spinning around his half of the rink.

Just when he felt a smile spreading on his face, Gray appeared beside him.

“Are you going to put me in the first game?” he asked. It was more a demand than an ask.

“We’ll have to see how you handle yourself. Gideon passed you pretty quickly today. I’m not sure you’re ready to face an entire team.”

“That’s bullshit.”

“Level your tone when you’re talking to me, Gray. I’m your captain.”

“You’re an asshole who’s jealous that I’m better than you.”

Will nodded. “You’re better defense than I’ll ever be. And you’re probably a better player than I am. But you suck at teamwork, and this isn’t a fucking solo. So you’re going to do whatever the fuck I tell you to do and you’re going to suck it up.” He looked at his watch, sighed and went into the rink. “Okay, guys, practice is finished. Do you stretches and go to the showers.”

He then skated towards where Jem was practicing spins. “Did you enjoy the show? Or was it too violent for you?”

Jem stopped with a flourish, cheeks flushed from the cold. 

“It was interesting.” He dragged his toepick across the ice, studying the resulting mark closely.

“You’re really good.” He scrunched up his nose. “I mean I think you are. I don’t really know a lot about hockey. It looks good anyway. Visually.”

He closed hs eyes in embarrassment. That was smooth Carstairs. Good job.

“Are you ready for your game?”

Will watched Jem stare at him for several seconds. The boy was a mess: bags under his eyes, read cheeks, messy hair and clothes Will could bet Jem would never wear to school. And still, there was some cuteness about it.

“Right,” Will said as he stepped into the apartment. He looked around and smiled. “This is a really cozy home. Do you live on your own? Any flatmate? Girlfriend? Boyfriend?”

He spotted a cat and smiled widely at it. “Oh, I’ve found your flatmate. Hey, mate,” he greeted the cat and extended his hand to pet it, but the cat hissed, scratched a long line over his wrist, and fled. “Interesting. Pets usually love me.”

He looked back at Jem and cleared his throat. He straightened himself and offered his hand to Jem as a greeting. “Good morning, Jem. You’re not going to scratch my arm too, are you?”

“Thanks.” Jem bit his bottom lip, his gaze suddenly finding all the tiny faults with his home that’d he’d never worried about before.

“It’s just me and uh...” He followed his cat’s retreating back.

“I’m so sorry!” Jem took Will’s hand and simultaneously pushed up part of Will’s sleeve to examine the damage. “If it makes you feel better, Church doesn’t like anyone.” He pulled Will to the couch and pushed his blankets to the side.

“I’ll be right back.” He rushed to the bathroom and grabbed his first aid kit. It came in handy for healing after night patrols.

He went back to Will and started disinfecting his scratch.

Will saw several people running out to meet him, but the first thing he felt was a hard slap accross the face.

“William Owen Herondale, how could you?” said Charlotte, hands on her hips. He opened his mouth to argue, but then her hands were on both sides of his face, cupping it like an older sister would do. “My boy,” she said.

And Will couldn’t help but hug her. He had spent years treating her like dirt, being insufferable to her, and she never stopped loving him. Will guessed that his cursed had been cancelled with his death. It had to, right? So he had Charlotte tightly and hid his face into the crook of her neck like a child -an oversized child- would. 

“I’m sorry, Charlotte. I’ll try not to die again.”

Will’s presence didn’t quite feel cemented until he saw the Institute members light up. As if Will could’ve escaped as a wisp of memory before Jem reunited them.

Jem stood near the back of the group, waiting while everyone reconciled with Will. He’d had his turn the previous night. It was time for everyone else to catch up with their missing family.

He felt his chest swell with something as he watched. Happiness, love, relief - he felt complete again.

Will guided Jem through three songs then disentangled from Jem and kissed him on the cheek. “Come on,” he told him. “I’ll get you a drink.”

He leaded the way to the bar and order two drinks for them.

“Hey, Will,” the bartender greeted him. “It’s been a while. Who’s your new boy?”

“This is Jem,” Will introduced him with a wide grin.

“Do you think he’s ready to meet the boss?”

Will laughed and winked at Jem. “Do you wanna meet Magnus? He’ll be thrilled when he knows you’re Gala’s teacher.”

“Okay.” Jem took Will’s hand quickly as they walked to the bar.

“Nice to meet you.” He accepted his drink with a grateful smile and took a sip. His face reflexively scrunched up at the slightly bitter taste. He hastened to swallow and ended up choking a bit, eyes watering.

“Sure.” He cleared his throat quickly. He was curious about the man who owned the flamboyantly elegant night club.

Will beamed at Jem’s words and nodded. “You too, Princess,” he replied before slipping his helmet on again and skating towards the team.

“Okay, boys, you know the drill. We’ve done it eight hundred times. Let’s go.”

It was a fairly easy game. Half the team was divided into offense and the other half into defense. They’d play against each other in teams of three. The first group was the main team: Will with Lightwoods as offense and Thomas, Blathorn and Gray as defense. If offense scored, it was point for them; if they lost the disk, it was point for defense.

Will always loved watching the Lighwood brothers play. They were both wingers, and they played in such synchronicity it was almost freaky. Playing as their centre was always Will’s favourite arrangement. They scored in less than one and a half minute, and the expression on Gray’s face was worth it.

“Better luck next time,” he told Gray with a mocking grin.

Gray didn’t say anything, but Will wasn’t bothered.

Jem moved to working on the spins he had trouble spotting on. It was easier today, with an interesting scene to watch as he twirled over and over.

He stopped every once in a while to watch the scrimmage on the other side of the rink. Beautiful was never a word he thought he’d use to describe hockey, but Will and the two other players flanking him seemed to dance in their attack.

Will arrived to Jem Carstairs’ apartment. He checked the address Sophie had given him twice before ringing the bell.

He had the slight feeling that somehow this wasn’t going to end up well. He wanted to befriend this boy for some strange reason, but he wasn’t sure he was doing it right. He somehow kept making him upset, which wasn’t precisely the approached he needed to go for if he wanted to like him.

He had even brought, along with Jem’s notes, some of Agatha’s pastries as a peace-offering/apology.

He nervously combed his hair with his free hand as he waited awkwardly at the door for Jem to answer.

Jem jumped at the unexpected sound of the bell, startling Church who walked off with a delicate kick to the back of Jem’s head. 

“Coming!” He called, unceremoniously dumping the blankets on the couch and skidding to the door in his socks.

He patted his hair down hastily and opened the door, rubbing the back of his head. Man, that cat kicked really hard.

He probably gaped at the person for about a minute before he found his voice.

“Hi W-Will.” He immediately straightened up.

“Oh, um come in.” He held the door wider for the other boy and backed into the apartment.

“Good thing I found you first.” He extended a hand to cup Jem’s face. “You look well, tonight,” he said with a smile. “I gather you have rested?”

Will then let his hand fall and looked at the Institute. “Well, you will have to ask them to come out, because I definitely cannot go in unless you want them to meet me as a pile of dust. Pulvis et umbra, I always say.”

“The best I have in ages.” Jem smiled. “Are you feeling better?”

He turned towards the Institute and clapped his hands. “Alright, I’ll go fetch them.” He turned and winked. “No moving okay?”

He rushed back into the Institute as if Will would disappear the longer he was away from him. He woke Charlotte and Henry first and gathered everyone in the front door.

“Don’t overwhelm him all at once.” He was drowned out by the stampede going out the door and he followed with a wide grin on his face.
