“It’s not okay!” She pulls her hand free, even without looking at him she knows the effect that her touch is having on him, and she doesn’t want that guilt on top of everything else. “You promised that you would never give up on me and you didn’t, And I repaid you by trying to kill you. You’re my best friend, Dexter. How could I do that to you?”
“Proud of me? Why?” Genevieve doesn’t understand how he can even stand to be near her after what she did. She’s crying again, and she’s sure that she looks like a bloody mess, literally. “It hurts. It hurts so much. This is why I turned my humanity off in the first place, because it was better to feel nothing than to feel everything. I don’t want to live like this.”
His hand moves back, slowly at first but quickly when he shoves it in his pocket. A light shrug, ❝It’s fine. Really.❞ He’s just happy that she’s getting her emotions back, though he can’t help the twisting feeling of guilt that comes from her crying. ❝You weren’t yourself....or you weren’t feeling, whatever it was, point is, I get it. I don’t blame you.❞
❝Because you came back. You didn’t have to, but you did. You turned it on.❞ He’s thankful that she didn’t kill him too, but he’ll bite his tongue on the appreciation for now. He sits down next to her, frowning at her tears. He wishes he could hug her, wipe her tears, anything at this point, but he couldn’t promise he’d be able to hold back the visions this time. ❝I don’t----I don’t know what it’s like to feel everything, especially at the degree you do, but...but I’ll try to help you deal with it. Even if all I can do is listen.❞
