i seriously need to get back into the ethan groove
âOh yeah, sure.â Again he was reminded of Ethanâs attempts to deal with his abilities as a Seer. Man, that must have been so hard to remember constantly. Benny wasnât sure if heâd be able to do it, if he was in Ethanâs position. So heâll support his best friend any way he can. This was definitely normal. âYou sure gloves will help?â Following Ethan out of the room, Benny shut the door behind him. Leaving that open would have been like leaving a big olâ neon sign proclaiming their snooping around.Â
âWell, so far itâs just been skin contact so as long as Iâm putting a layer between my skin and whatever I end up touching, it should work.â It was just a theory, one he was hoping would work. Until then, he was keeping his hands in his pockets and his sleeves long. Which did get uncomfortable when summer rolled around but heâd been managing alright.
âThe hard part will be explaining the gloves without looking like Iâm crazy or something.â
Benny had a feeling he wouldnât be able to hide the fact he knows now for very long, but in the meantime, he can at least act as though everything was normal. Like nothing has changed. Still Benny. Still Ethan. âVideo games. Definitely.â The distraction was sure welcoming. Just as he was about to make his way over to his room to get his computer turned on for gaming, he instead turned back to Ethan. âCan never have enough pizza. And hey, maybe weâll get lucky and finally get a free pie. Come on, letâs go.â Maybe just getting out of the house altogether would be good.Â
âMaybe, yeah.â He grinned to help the sense of normalcy. He wanted to make sure Benny completely understood, as far as Ethan was concerned Benny was just Benny no matter what.Â
âCan we stop at the store? We can get sodas, and I can get the gloves.â Ethanâs mind was in multiple places, making sure they were prepared to spend the night together just chilling out as well as getting himself together mentally. âUntil I get the hang of them, maybe youâll actually win one.â The Seer joked as he headed off to gather his things to head back to his house.
âAt the risk of sounding mushy, if this whole thing never happened we never would have been friends. Or we could have but it would have been really weird.â Benny started grabbing all the things he had taken out of the basket, putting them back where they belong. When the space was cleaned, he kicked the basket back under the bed where it belonged. Out of sight, out of mind. It helped a little.
Benny appreciated Ethanâs attempt at relating. It was hard to watch his best friend deal with the effects of being a Seer. Whenever Ethan has a vision, heâs immediately at risk. It could be dangerous. Luckily, they havenât had a situation of someone taking advantage of those few seconds but it could happen. âYouâre still Ethan. Iâm still Benny. Letâs just forget the whole thing.â
âKnowing my dad, heâd have had me call you uncle.â Ethan helped where he could, fixing the blankets on the bed to better hide the fact they had been snooping.
âYeah. Still Benny.â He nodded and got up from where he was sitting. âVideo games?â It was his suggestion to help with Bennyâs whole âforget the whole thingâ idea. Sure, it may come up again later but for the time being they were just teenagers hanging out and having fun. âOr we could grab some movies, head to my house, and get pizza. Pretty sure the pizza guy thinks you live there anyway.â It was a friendly tease towards his best friend, hopefully a gesture that they can return to normalcy. Or at least, what passed for normalcy with them.
âItâs weird but I donât feel like myself anymore. Does that make sense? âŠanyway, itâs definitely not something Iâm ready to just roll with.â Benny said with a humorless laugh. âCan we keep this between the two of us? I donât think Iâm ready to let everyone know.â Everyone being all three of their shared friends. Benny wasnât even sure what heâd say to Grandma (it was too weird yet to think of her as mother).
âIt kind of does, yeah.â Ethan nodded in partial understanding. âI wasnât going to tell anyone. Not without you saying it was okay. Promise.â There was a long pause before he continued. âItâs not the same, but sometimes I just... I wonder if Iâm me anymore or just the Seer. I canât turn it off so it feels like it controls me instead of me having any control at all. Feels... Lost. Again, itâs not the same, but if I was you Iâd probably feel pretty lost. Itâs okay to need time to figure out where you are.â
âI should be so much older right now. Like, your dad old.â
Benny shook his head in response to Ethanâs qusetion, not entirely trusting himself to answer the question right away. He wasnât sure if he was okay, actually. He knew that his friendship with Ethan is real, and there was no changing that no matter what. All those years at school were real. Every birthday and Christmas were real. But now it felt⊠different somehow.
âI donât know what to think.â
"Iâm pretty sure I saw a picture of my parents hanging out with older you.â Ethan pointed out the photo after adjusting his sleeve again and flipping to the page in question.Â
He studied Bennyâs face, and while he wasnât an empath he could still tell that there was a mixed bag of emotions. âYouâre still you. Thereâs a lot we donât know, but I know that youâre still you. Okay? This is a lot to process. Itâs okay to need time for that.â
As the real world came back into focus, Benny let go of Ethanâs hand to rub at his eyes. And maybe he was using that as an excuse not to look at his friend immediately after what they saw. What in the world was he supposed to even say to all that? His life still felt like his life. It didnât feel as though he had lived it all before. It didnât feel like any of this was magicked up, even accidentally. But that was clearly him in his room with his spell book.
He wanted to crack a smile, make a joke, have this pressure on his chest somehow be relieved. But in the end, he could only give a little huff. âWhen was she going to tell me?â Knowing his Grandma, or⊠Mother, maybe she wasnât planning on it. Maybe she was waiting until he found out on his own, however long that took. And yeah, Benny felt hurt by that. No matter what her intentions were. âShe should have told me. I thought my dadâ For years Ethan, you know I thought my dadâŠâ That he left Benny behind. That he wasnât good enough. Those few years where he thought his dad really would be back, only to grow up and realize, hey, maybe not.
With a longer sigh, Benny rolled his shoulders. With a forced smile, he playfully shoved at Ethanâs shoulder. âAnd you thought you got your driverâs license first.â
âShe should have.â Ethan agreed simply, hesitating just a second before putting a comforting hand on Bennyâs back. âIt felt like... She realized she made mistakes, like she blamed herself. There was a lot of guilt.â He wasnât trying to say Evelyn was blameless, just that he could see why she did what she did.
At Bennyâs joke made him smile a little. âYeah, and I guess youâre older than me now too.â He nudged Benny back. âAre you okay?â Again, Ethan reached to hold onto Benny comfortingly. âI mean, this is a lot to process.â
Holding onto the photo, Benny moved it closer to Ethan. The other boy must have touched it or something because then the vision started. Benny never experienced something quite like it. It felt like he was there, but not really. Not quite a ghost but⊠well, it was the closet thing could describe the experience to.
There was some adult man (no, the man from the photos in the room, his âfatherâ) in the room Benny now called his own. He recognized the set up. The wallpaper. Nothing really changed. This man was maybe visiting. The bags on one side of the room were up to debate. In his hands, that oh so familiar spell book. He seemed to be searching for something. A spell or recipe for a potionâ Benny recognized that look of concentration. What he was looking for, Benny had no idea. The man put a finger on the page, apparently finding the spell he was looking for (or thought he was looking for). He spoke the words, there was a flash of lightâ
He could feel the charge before it hit, the unmistakable realisation that a vision was coming regardless of if heâd wanted it or not. While he knew he couldnât see Benny literally, in his head he had a pretty strong image of him. Of the two boys hand in hand watching the scene unfold, and some bit in the back of his mind was pretty sure that if he could literally see Benny heâd have a good idea of what he looked like during the visions.
Ethan could feel what was going on, the emotions surrounding the moment. Fear, concern, panic, guilt, determination, regret. The picture changed, from a man in the room to the baby, dressed in old onesie pajamas staring wide-eyed at a woman (clearly this was Bennyâs grandma) and smiling at her with his little chubby hands reached up to her. A sigh of âOh, Ben...â as the woman reached to pick up the baby. The thought of âIâm not going to let this happen againâ as the little fingers curled up holding her blouse.
And just as quickly as it had come on, the images left Ethanâs head and he blinked before looking at his friend. It took Ethan a moment to visually focus on Benny, it always took a moment to get his head back in order after a vision, but when he did he just stared at his friend. He wanted to say words, none would come. None that would be useful anyway, part of him wanted to remark that not everyone could be their own father but he knew that was probably in poor taste.
Favorite Season 2 Moments 3/5â Benny WeirÂ
Benny followed Ethanâs instructions, after all, if anyone knew how this whole Seer thing worked, it was the Seer. And yes, he was pretty serious⊠up until that last part, at which point he cracked a grin. âI know youâre my best friend and everything but this is a little sudden Ethan.â
It took Ethan a bit longer than it should have to realise what exactly Benny was implying, the realisation causing his face to turn a bright pink. âThatâs not what I meant.â He muttered a little embarrassed. The Seer reached for Bennyâs hand and held onto it before gesturing for Benny to hand him the photo. âJust move the picture where I can reach and keep holding onto it.â
Although the situation was kind of freaking him out a little, there was time to laugh at the idea of Ethan accessing Roryâs thoughts. But then he folded his arms across his chest, nodding in agreement to Ethanâs plan. âYeah, letâs do that. Thereâs no way Iâll be able to focus on anything else until I know if this is for real.â
âGrab out one of the photos.â Ethan held the album up to Benny, waiting until his friend had a good hold on it before pushing his sleeves back up to show his hands. It was going to be weird explaining away gloves when he finally got some. âAnd then I need to be able to touch you.â
âFair point.â Their lives were nothing but a constant stream of âweirdâ. But this felt like a different kind of weird. When he was younger, Benny envied Ethan. It was difficult not to. His best friend had both a mom and a dad, and Benny believed that one day his dad would come back butâ
âSo Grandma is really⊠my mom? Iâve had to grow up twice?â What kind of unfair world did he live in that heâs had to experience puberty twice? What did he do to deserve that?
âItâs just a theory right now.â Ethan pointed out, even though he was totally sure. âWeâd have to test it, ask your grandma or use visions to see if weâre right. Iâve been working on hopping into peopleâs heads. Usually with Rory, itâs kind of... empty in there though. Maybe I can knock a memory loose or show you what I see?â
âSure, magic is complicated. And weird. Mostly weird. If youâre going to reverse a spell, you need to knowââ Benny trailed off, and just as Ethanâs thought process had been clear through the boyâs expression, a similar look crossed the Spellmasterâs face. â-Need to know how it was saidâŠâ He continued after a moment, looking at the photo with newfound understanding. âOh my god.â
The pieces were clicking into place. Every photo of his father, every out of place thing his Grandma ever said about him⊠Benny scrambled away from Ethan, jumping up to his feet so he had space to pace. âNo way. No, no. No. This is super weird, E. Thereâs no way.â
Ethan was giving Benny the space to pace and process what they were both thinking. âIt makes sense.â He said it gently, not wanting to freak his best friend out more than he already was. âB; weâre friends with vampires, we fought a car possessed by a vampire ghost, we wrestled a mutant alligator. This is pretty tame compared to those. And it does help explain why she wanted to keep this from you until she thought you were ready.â
âLook, look! I have a picture of my vampire girlfriend!â
Benny gave a nonchalant shrug of his shoulders. âYeah, Grandma said he left. She also use to say heâd be back but⊠Iâm not ten anymore. I know he wonât really come back.â And that always hurt to think about, but hey, he was doing just fine with his Grandma and heâs got Ethan, so itâs not like heâs doing poorly. Benny scooted closer to Ethan, practically shoulder to shoulder with the other boy. âWhat are you thinking?â
It was probably the fact Ethan continued to flip between those two pages even after explaining it that had showed his friend the gears were turning in Ethanâs head. Or the fact Benny knew Ethan so well. âRemember how when Jane brought her doll to life trying to fix it, she had to be the one to reverse it? Cause you couldnât figure out what she did and how she did it?â
His idea sounded so ridiculous now that he was saying it aloud. And honestly, Ethan wasnât sure if he needed to continue the idea, maybe what heâd said already explained it enough for Benny to understand.
Without a word, Benny handed the album to Ethan. His mind was racing to come up with a feasible explanation for the photo his best friend pointed out. That wasnât him. Couldnât be him. But maybe it was. The whole thing seemed impossible and sort of spooky, like something out of the Twilight zone. Then again, Benny and Ethanâs lives lately have been nothing but that.
Ethan took the album and carefully adjusted his sleeves before starting to thumb through the album. As he flipped through pages he couldnât help but notice something... Wrong. âThis canât be right.â He flipped back a page, then ahead, looking between the two pages for a good minute before continuing. âHe just, disappears. I mean look.â He pointed out a photo of who had to be Bennyâs father holding one of the spell books, then flipped to the next page where there was a baby sitting and grinning. âOne page heâs there, still no girlfriend or anything, the next heâs gone and youâre big enough to sit up.â
He gestured to the photo he was referring to. âLook, if thatâs not you itâs a clone or something. I mean nobody looks exactly like one of their parents so that canât be your dad.â Ethanâs brow was furrowing, mind already racing to figure out this new puzzle.
Putting the papers down, Benny leaned over the basket to find the photo Ethan was looking at. And yeah, there he was. At first glance, he could have maybe assumed that was just an ordinary picture of himself⊠But upon further investigation between the camera quality and the telling sign of the Commodore 64 in the backgroundâ Benny let out a nervous laugh as he picked up the photo. âMaybe Iâm the evil twin.â
âPass that album over.â He was going to see if he could flip through the pages even with his hands hidden away inside the sleeves. He had an idea, but he didnât want to just present it without any evidence. None of the photos he could see ever showed the boy with a girl or anyone other than what looked like friends. One even looked kind of like his own father (which really would explain how his parents were already friendly with Bennyâs grandmother when the boys met), but nobody that looked like they could be Bennyâs mother.
If there still wasnât when he went through the album, then heâd offer the idea. It just seemed so ridiculous though.
