My high mind

Critics argue that a medical marijuana law is just a steppingstone to statutes allowing recreational use. They say that it would make pot easier for teens to get and that it would lead to harder drugs. They also point to all the approved drugs that are available. I personally think this is a non-sensical statement. Harder drugs (cocaine, heroine, etc.) are available through the black market. Heroine was once marketed toward children by Bayer (a German drug company) in the late 1890s as a cure for cough and cold pain remedies. 

Bayer is the same company who had a recall on one of their drugs due to the fact that it was noted in being contaminated with the AIDS virus. Production stopped in the United States in 1984, however Bayer continued to sell these drugs to parts of Asia, Latin America, and Africa making millions and possibly killing the same amount. 

The big “no” comes from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which continues to say that marijuana “has a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision” and that “no sound scientific studies supported medical use of marijuana.” I believe that statements such as this are not only ignorant, but disrespectful towards the families of dying children and loved ones. 

Our country actually has a deep and rich history of marijuana. The first marijuana law was in Jamestown Colony in Virginia in 1619. It was once not only legal, but it was once one of the largest agricultural crops in the world. This was because farmers were required by the government to grow hemp up until 1883. Hemp is the most durable natural soft fiber in the world. It has literally 1000s of uses including fabric, lighting oil, medicine, paper and fiber. Benjamin Franklin used hemp to start one of America’s first paper mills. Even the first two copies of the Declaration of Independence was written on cannabis hemp paper. 

The principal author, Thomas Jefferson, was quoted on saying, “If a law is unjust a man is not only right to disobey it he is obligated to do so.”
