But wait, why doesn’t VisualVM work with Java 9?

No idea, but it’s probably something broken in the launcher. I’m too fed up with Oracle at the moment to figure out how to properly fix this, since it appears to be caused by some registry entries (namely, HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Java Development Kit being moved to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\JDK), but the workaround is to define `visualvm_jdkhome` in your etc/visualvm.conf file. Note that `etc` is in your installation directory if you’re on Windows.

How vcpkg integration works

Since I’m going to inevitably search for this again, here is the only documentation I’ve found about how vcpkg informs Visual Studio as to where it has installed packages. Hoorah for Process Monitor, because apparently tracing an application is the only way to figure out how it works.

That suggestion is a lie; rerun with `./gradlew --debug` to get more information than “it didn’t work :’(” because gradle does not log to files by default. Pro tip: don’t waste thirty minutes looking for a file. Also, that complaint about a cache directory? It’s caused by a plugin throwing an exception, so search the debug output for `[ERROR]` messages to figure out what’s happening. Obviously.

As is typically the case when I try to do silly things involving build systems, it’s been mildly frustrating getting Kotlin up and running with Dagger 2 in IntelliJ (2016.2.4, if that matters). Here’s a quick example of how one would use the two projects together, in case it is of any use to anyone in the future (or more than likely, myself in several months!)

Although, on second thought, I’m probably going to skip the whole thing. It’s easy enough to just pass interfaces around instead of concrete classes than to deal with a DI framework.

What are monads?

It’s normally easier (for me at least) to how to useabstract concepts rather than just describing the concept directly. So: you use monads whenever you want do one of the following:

Change when and in which order statements are applied.

Control the result and input for every statement.

This covers everything from lists (repeat statements over every element), to IO (require that all results require unwrapping), to coroutines (when seeing a result that has a return value of coroutine, resolve it asynchronously before applying the next statement). Note that there are certainly more and better examples than this, but it’s just how I think about these concepts.

What’s a branch?

A named reference to a commit. It lets you keep track of where you were working and is especially helpful if you’re working with someone else (i.e. you can work on separate branches without accidentally overwriting eachother’s changes or dealing with locks then merge your work after you’re done).

What’s a reference?

The hash of something that you’d like to refer to (kinda like the nickname of a commit or file).

What’s the working directory?

The folder on your computer where you have/are working on a local copy of the repository.

What’s the (git) index?

All of the changes you want to put in the next commit. Normally you’d just put everything in, but this gives you the flexibility to leave some stuff out.

What’s HEAD? (in git :P)

A reference to the most recent commit that git thinks you’ve looked at (i.e. if you committed right now, that new commit’s parent would be the value of HEAD before it’s updated to that new commit).

What’s a (vcs) repository?

A folder that’s both on the cloud and your computer that has its version history tracked.

What does “merging” a commit mean?

It means taking two commits and combining them into one commit. You’d normally do this if two people were working on the same project at the same time and wanted to share their results.

What’s a (git) commit?

Three things:

A copy of all the files that were in your repository when you made the commit.

A hash that identifies this commit.

The hash for your last commit (or two hashes if you merged two commits to make this one).
