he had been getting ready for bed when her voice reached his ears, he could feel himself spinning around to face her. he didn’t think that she would come to him when he was not on duty, after their last interaction together he was sure that any valuable moments between them would come to an end. that any sort of friendship or more would cease now that he had drawn a line between them, against his own wishes but it needed to be done. “come here,” his voice was soft as he opened his arms towards her, waiting for her to walk into them so he could hug her and keep her close.

     She appreciated to hear that his kindness was not merely an act of duty, or professionalism. It was nice to acknowledge that someone liked her for her personality, and not merely the title she was presented with. “That is very nice to hear, for a moment I thought perhaps you were merely here just for my good looks.” She joked, a soft laugh leaving her lips. “Perfect is unreachable -- even a princess has flaws you know -- I have made my fair share of mistakes.” She spoke, the smile fading for a moment. She did not wish to speak of it, not with him. Her attention moved again as he spoke, a gasp leaving her lips, as she stood and lightly tapped his arm in amusement. “You are terrible! Without such drama, you would truly be lost.” She mused in amusement.

he knew that he was doing what was best for them both. he was drawing the line where it was supposed to be drawn. they both needed to stand on their respective sides and he knew that it wasn’t going to be easy at all. the harshness in her voice and the avoidance of her gaze was enough to feel like a stab wound, had he screwed up? but this was how it was supposed to be wasn’t it? “flo,” pausing he let out a soft sigh and felt his head dip ever so slightly as he turned towards the door. “are you sure there is nothing else you need, princess?”

She kept her gaze away, avoiding his as much as possible. She did not wish for him to be here, she needed peace, and the discussions they had were bringing her memories of discontent and heartache. “I do not need anything -- you can go now.” She spoke bluntly, moving across the room to sit on the chair, making sure to distance herself as much as possible.

standing there staring at her, he wanted to take back his words and confess everything to her but that was not possible. there were rules and he was not above those rules. letting out a deep breath through his nose as he listened to her words he wanted to throw all caution into the wind and scoop her up in his arms but he couldn't. "florence," his voice soft, pleading, as he stood there. he could feel his hand flexing as he held himself back from doing the unspeakable. "you care for me as your guard and that is all," he explained as he licked his lips, his gaze refusing to break from her.

She was doing her best to keep evidence off her face, but she was upset, hurt and even angry at him. She knew she had no right to be, he was setting boundaries, but the feelings she had for him kept rising to the surface. "If that's what you wish, for me to treat you as merely a guard, then fine." She spoke harshly, eyes averted and avoidant of his gaze. She could not do it, she needed space, and with him around, it felt like a reminder of the past. "You are no longer needed here, you can step outside." She spoke bluntly, signing to himself as she did.

he almost laughed in her face at her words, kinder than anyone else? surely others hadn’t made his princess feel less than what she was or were unkind to her? if they were then he would be having some words with those he came in contact with. “you are my princess, i should always be kind to you especially since we spend so much time together,” he teased softly. “rest assured princess, there has been no one that has caught my eye but if anyone does i will come to you first and explain my situation so that way if you choose to release me from my position then you will have the very option to do so,” he rambled out secretly knowing that no one would cross his mind.

She remained quiet for a moment, enjoying his company, but also contemplating her next words. “I suppose so.” She wondered if the kindness was a mask, perhaps he did not like her as much as she thought. “Does that mean some of the kindness is an act? As part of duty?” She queried, concern in her eyes. She would rather honesty, especially if she had done something wrong. “If you ever feel I--- do something that you think is wrong, I would like your opinion, do not withhold yourself on my account.” She smiled, sighing deeply. She reached for the cup of tea beside her, taking a sip, before placing it down on the saucer. “I look forward to meeting them.” She responded, a little harsher than intended, mostly because she could not hide her discontent.

A small nod in return, and Florence found herself succumbing to temptation, eyes flickering shut at his lips on hers, hands moving to wrap around his neck, pulling him closer. “i-” he shook his head as he looked down at her, he longed to reach out and cup her face, longed to hold her close, he longed to take care of her the way a proper man should. but he couldn’t. one wrong move or one wrong word and he could be shipped off once more. he let out a heavy sigh as he licked his lips. her words were like a knife to the gut, for he longed to say the back, he wished nothing more than to tell her how he felt but hidden words kept him in his proper position. “you cant,” his words were soft as he looked at her with pleading eyes, “you can do so much better.”

She should have expected the reply, despite her baring herself to him, and all of her insecurities, he would inevitably turn her down once more. She knew better than to give her heart to him, though she knew it were not simple, she had pleaded in many ways to make it so. She did not imagine a life without him in it, and yet, she had to live a life with him by her side, without any of the perks or love that came with it. “I cannot do better -- you are the best.” She pleaded, handing more to encase his gently. “I know you will not hear it, and I do not blame you so, but I cannot continue to pretend I do not care for you.”

lucas had to hold back his sigh of irritation. how one man could hop from lady to lady was beyond him, and while he hadn’t been in town for that long lucas was already disliking the prince. if the guard had it his way without getting into trouble he would have given the prince a piece of his mind the second he got but he had to be good. he had to be well behaved. “i’m sorry that you and this miss daphne had to go through with that. surely time will come where he will learn his lesson,” he mused softly. “you do not have to believe them for i will believe them enough for us both,” he offered kindly. “ahhh yes well there is no lady that would wish to share my attention with my job and my job will always come first,” he stated as he looked at her with a firm gaze, his hidden message coming out loud and clear.

She noted how he looked at her, and she did everything in her power to ignore it. She knew he was everything she had wanted, but it had been taken from her grasp the moment he was sent away. Nothing had ever happened between them, but they almost had. This had been enough for his life to be ruined, and sent away -- she could not risk such things again. “Thank you, you are truly kinder to me than anyone I know.” She had to remind herself that it was his duty to be kind. If he were not serving her, perhaps this would not be the case. “I do wish you happiness, I do not want your role by my side to taint ant chance of happiness you have.” Selfishly, she wanted her to himself, but she had learned this would not happen. She lowered her gaze, avoiding his.

She needed to get out, the home remaining claustrophobic and unappealing after current events. She had managed to slide past her guard, leaving undetected to venture out into London. She had spent an hour or so in a coffee shop, before closing time hit and she left to the cobbled street. Nightfall had set in, leaving the street illuminated by only a few street lights. Shadows appeared to lurk around every corner, and Florence was doing her best to be discrete. The sound of another's voice startled her slightly, breath hitching in her throat.

"You startled me -- " She gasped slightly, relieved to see it was a man , of whom she hoped was good natured. "I know - perhaps I misjudged, I needed some air and let's say, it's rather frowned upon for me to be wandering alone." @ofcooke

For the first time, a tinge of fear rose to her stomach, causing her to breathe a little faster than before. This had been unspoken territory for a long time, of which Florence had fought with her feelings, and tried her best to move on. She felt perhaps she was jumping too quickly, for his comment may be merely professional -- however, she had been hurt many times before, and always thought the worst.

Stepping a little closer, but keeping a short distance between the, Florence sighed deeply. "Prey tell -- for I have no idea what you are speaking about." There had moments where she had tried to speak of her feelings to him, and he had shot her down. Perhaps in the moment, she was being truly callous , but she was tired - exhausted of trying to get him to see her for who she truly was. She had told him, many times, she would leave it all for him, go on the run if needed -- but it was not enough.
