Scarlett hadn’t been doing a very good job of clearing her mind but was still startled when someone called out to her. Her eyes flew open before she turned her body to see where the voice was coming from. “Um, hello!” she called back, pretty positive that she had never seen the boy before. Was he mistaking her for someone else? Did he need something? Was she in his spot? “Am I in your spot?” she called out.

Johnny stopped at her question and frowned before laughing. “Nope! I’m in my spot, you’re in yours,” he replied, continuing to walk down towards the dock. “What’re you doing out here?” He asked. It was warmer than it had been during all of the snow, but he still hadn’t seen all that many people outside other than those going to classes. She was the first one he’d seen just enjoying nature.

Scarlett sat at the edge of the dock, her legs dangling over the fishing pond. It was quiet and the girl figured that it probably wasn’t fishing season yet. Was there such thing as fishing season anyway? After all, didn’t people go ice fishing? With a shake of her head, she ignored the random thoughts and tried to focus on meditating. It wasn’t something she was particularly good at but she was determined to give it a try. After watching some Youtube videos on the topic, she wandered off to the dock because she figured it would be quiet. Closing her eyes, she tried to slow her breathing and clear her mind.

Johnny had pulled on his wellies and went running through the courtyard to slide along the slushy snow. Everything was melting and warming up, and he couldn’t help but get out and enjoy the sunshine. He was wearing a pair of blue rimmed shades and trying to pretend that it was warmer out than it actually was. He made his way down to the lake to see how the water was melting, where he spotted a blonde sitting on the dock. “Hullo!” he called out, oblivious to her meditating.

“Phew,” Mona wiped her brow as a joke, acting as if it were a joke when she really was relieved. “It is dreadful. Can you believe Blake Shelton was voted hottest guy? Honestly..” She grumbled, just as much as she had when it happened. “Of all the guys!” Mona exclaimed, other peoples questionable taste, for whatever reason, forgetting taste was subjective. “Ooh, yeah, they’re cool. I loved their Heathens one. Not that familiar, just the hits.” Mona grinned at him, music got her the most animated. “I love Alter Bridge and Audioslave. Myles Kennedy and Chris Cornell just have the most amazing voices. You know them?”

Johnny laughed and then nodded. “I know, of all people to be able to claim that title--him?” He asked incredulously, and shook his head with another laugh. He nodded in agreement about Heathens. “My favorites are Not Today and Ode to Sleep and I recommend them if you haven’t heard them yet!” He felt bad when she named two bands he didn’t recognize. “Oh, I don’t know them, but I’ll check them out when I get back to my dorm!” He promised with a smile. “Which songs to do you suggest?”

“Oh cool! Lucky you. I liked their Moriarty.” Maybe she had a predisposition to bad guys. “It’s just sleeping rough isn’t it, cold and no clean facilities.” That was the biggest problem she had with festivals, but she’d manage if she had to. “I’ll be checking out the lineups soon, see what’s good. What do you like?” She asked, ready to judge his music taste hard if he didn’t like something she liked. Mona walked past him into the building and stomped her feet a couple times, forcing the snow from her shoes.`

Johnny nodded in agreement. “Yeah, he’s a brilliant actor!” He let her into the building first and followed right after, the whoosh of warm air a welcome hit. “I like mostly everything although I don’t really care for country music,” he replied, grimacing slightly at the memory of the kid he sat next to on the plane who’d blasted George Strait so loudly in his headphones that Johnny could hear it the whole way to New York. “I recently started listening to Twenty One Pilots and they’re pretty great,” he nodded. “What about you?” He asked, kicking a snow chunk onto the carpet off of his boot leaning towards the way to the office.

Johnny had gone to the horse stables the night before the snow had gotten really bad, and spent the night reading to the horses on a stack of hay to keep them calm. He’d learned to ride that summer, and had grown fond of hanging around the stables even when he wasn’t able to take them out. When he woke, Darling was greeted with texts saying students were meant to stay inside and not leave shelter until notified that they were safe. His heart started pounding, and he scratched his head, wondering if they’d be able to send him food even if he was in the stables. “Guess it’s just you and me, bud,” Johnny sighed, patting the neck of the brown quarter horse he’d been sharing a stall with.

“Benedict…” Mona thought, trying to put a face to the name. “Sherlock!” She exclaimed, pointing her hand at him when she figured it out. “Good actor, that would be pretty cool. I’ve not seen any celebrities.” She wouldn’t care too much about actors, but musicians (good ones) would be thrilling. “Well I’ve never done the whole camping thing, not outside my own living room, but I think I’d do alright at it.” She liked the idea that she was independent and stronger than she might look, knowing she didn’t exactly look her best right now.

Johnny nodded enthusiastically and grinned. “Yeah, it was neat! He was very nice and even took a picture with me,” he added happily. “There’s nothing to camping! And I’m sure there’d be loads of people around at a festival to help; I’d need help setting up my tent,” he chuckled, and looked up as they drew closer to the main office. Johnny reached out and tugged on the door handle, sweeping a load of snow away from the door.

“The sex is good, but that’s about it.” She said honestly, figuring that would be the only thing she missed about Noah. Well, other than the free skag, but that probably wouldn’t apply to him. “You ever travel in to see someone?” Mona questioned, stepping out of her divot of snow, feet getting cold and soggy. She’d not meant for him to be included in her festivals, but maybe if she was off with some other school kid then getting out would be easier. “Yeah, it’s pretty cool. You mind camping?”

Johnny’s cheeks tinted pink at her words, but they were conveniently covered by his scarf. He cleared his throat at her question, somewhat lost in thought. “Er, no, not really. Although I did see Benedict Cumberbatch on the tube one morning! That was pretty neat,” he laughed, trudging through the snow. “I love camping! I used to go now and then when I was a kid, but haven’t really been since. Don’t mind sleeping outside though, no,” he added, leading them towards the main office.

Mona scrunched her lips up, nodding her head almost as if she wasn’t listening. “Well, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.” She told him, because her experiences had been pretty shite so far, so she didn’t hold much expectation for the future either. “That… does not sound like a good music scene,” She chuckled it off, “But maybe there’s good stuff here, it’s close enough to NYC to catch something good. You think they’ll let me skip town for festival season?” She hoped so, it had been on her to do list, and since she was away from the Junkyard Dogs perhaps she could manage her way down there.

“Well that’s good to know; haven’t been missing out on much then, have I?” He felt a little better at the notion of it not being all it was cracked up to be. “Yeah, I mean London’s great for music, but Pinner...not so much,” he laughed, shrugging. “Ooh, I hope so! It’d be fun to go to a festival!” Johnny’d never been to concert, let alone a festival, but it sounded like fun to him; most everything did.

Mona turned her head back to him, brows raised in question. “What, you perpetually single? Are you hiding some weird quirk from me right now?” She asked, both unaware of how she sounded, and thinking it was a valid question. “I’ve not been far either, maybe further than you though…” She mused, she’d at least travelled to Florida once. “That’s pretty cool right, gotta be a good music scene there.” She commented. “It’s…” She stared around, “not much different than this.”

Johnny laughed and shook his head. “Just perpetually single I guess.” It was easier to say that then to jump headfirst into his fear of romantically or intimately attaching himself to anyone and his absolute phobia of growing up. He shrugged at the mention of music. “I guess; I live in Pinner which is mostly just full of old folks and families that frown on anything too noisy,” he chuckled, feeling every bit as lame about his home town as he did when he’d left it. “No? I’ve not been anywhere in the US besides here, so I guess it’s nice to know it’s not much different elsewhere.”

Mona stared at the expanse of white that should have been a path and nodded her agreement. “Yeah I get that.” She smirked at his proposed trickery, approving entirely. “If that doesn’t work tell them you’ve got a girlfriend or something, parents love that shit, gets ‘em all excited about grandkids and that.” Mona rolled her eyes, smiling for real when she bent and picked up her backpack and board. “I’m probably the most exotic person at this school. I’m from Connecticut. Literally the next state over. You? England right?”

“Oh sure,” Johnny laughed at the notion. “They’d know something was up if I told them that.” Although the idea was funny to him, he did start to wonder if his dad would be more interested in him if he did have a girlfriend. “Connecticut is exotic to me! Everywhere is, actually; I haven’t been anywhere,” he added with a laugh. “And yeah, England, right outside of London. What’s Connecticut like?”

“What brilliant timing I have.” Mona sighed, perhaps as a kid she’d have enjoyed it but right now it was just a hassle. She hadn’t considered that there might be some benefit, like time off class. “Good, cause I don’t have it in me to try and find a place to stay right now.” The brunette also didn’t trust herself to choose wisely. “Ah what? Seriously? That sucks, you should try get it back. I’d hate to lose mine.” She was quite pleased to have found something in common with the first person she’d met, even if he was awfully peppy. “Excellent, I can’t wait til this shit melts then. Hopefully you have yours by then, we can cruise.”

Johnny nodded solemnly, looking down a moment. “Yeah, it’s been awful to just have to walk everywhere,” he stated, and then grinned a goofy grin as he looked back up. “That’d be awesome! I’ll tell them it’s for a club or an experiment or something; my parents love that kind of stuff,” Johnny chuckled, hefting her duffel bag onto his shoulder. “Main office is this way,” he said, turning to head down the path. “Where’re you from, then?” He asked, noting her American accent.
