This yellow-rumped warbler is on his way north soon to get his freak on, he is plump and ready for the flight!
He hit me with a few poses declaring “Those butter-beauties wont know what to do when they see me” while making Johnny Bravo noises then flew off. Nah really check these dudes out when you get a chance, they go as far north as Newfoundland. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Yellow-rumped_Warbler/overview
Another hike, more bird pictures and getting lost in the woods for a bit. Got to see some cool ones like a bald eagle again, the Prothonotary warbler was loud as heck.
Just what the doctor ordered. Dont forget to turn your outside lights off at night if you can for a while, the birds are migrating!
Small birding report from Oxley nature center yesterday, I saw the crow mobbing the eagle, which was awesome. I also had these shots, and while editing realized I saw a 2nd eagle, not just the same one I had been seeing for the past few minutes. I guess at some point they swapped.
Finally got eyes on and got to watch a belted kingfisher fish from a distance, and got to add the egret ive been looking for to my list! Favorite shots from the day, was about 5.5 hours total. I attached the list of all birds i could get eyes on as well although i kinda stop counting after 4-5 and just note them as being "in abundance" in my journal.
Heres a crow trying to mob a juvenile bald eagle, bold strategy cotton.
Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias), DARING YOU, JUST FUCKIN DARING YOU TO TRY SOME OF THIS!!!, family Eurypygidae, order Eurypygiformes, Costa Rica
This bird is the only member of its family.
Its closest living relative is the Kagu of New Caldeonia.

Just out here chasing birds!
This week has been hard, really the last year but the existential dread has been real. I've spent more time out in nature than ever to escape it. Yesterday I went hiking for about 5 hours just looking at nature, and learning what I could. These are my favorite photos. I hope you like them as well.
Just some weirdo looking for birds…
Stumbled into a hidden boss fight apparently...
You ever just wander the forest looking for birds? TBH im here for all the animals though.
Magical girl transformation!
This is the bird that got me into birdwatching, she is a leucistic cardinal I am now calling Leucille Ricardinal. Her mate is ricky of course. Anyways I have been learning photography for the last 3 months, and i try to take pictures of birds outside of my office window to practice. She is a frequent guest, and always gorgeous, but holy shit what a pose tonight.
Another day of birdwatching and practicing photography. 7 ish miles hiked, lots of wildlife! Species featured today! Pileated Woodpecker Red-shouldered hawk Tufted Titmouse Swamp Sparrow Crow Ruby-crowned Kinglet Mallards Blue-winged Teal
I don't need soap operas when I have grackles.
Another trip out into the woods to check out some birds last night. Snuck out to some wetlands this time to try and get eyes on some possible egrets, no luck yet, but I did run into a ton of other wonderful birds!
17 species added to the life list, it was an incredible evening.
I finally got to see the Double-crested cormorant, not rare but shockingly more difficult than youd think to get good eyes on. It took a couple of weeks here at least. I'll be a little mean, and say they are kinda weird, but they are so much fun to watch. Especially as they all tried to stack up in this tree!
Weather was perfect, another 5 miles of hiking. A few days off now to focus on the bike and fitness, hopefully I'll sneak out here early this weekend and get hidden near the water to get some close ups! Here is the complete list of species seen!
And of course the selfies taken along the way.
I went birding for my 2nd time again today! I got to add 17 species to my life list, and these are the We got this barred owl! They were just kinda staring at me, a lil creepy but im into it.
This Blue Jay did their best missile impersonation for me.
I ran into this Red-headed woodpecker, no notes, just watched them tap on a tree for 10 minutes.
Then I chased this Ruby-crowned Kinglet for like 30 minutes after merlin picked up the call. Honestly I got lucky, they landed right above me and chirped. Thanks dude.
Then I walked into the middle of this field to eat some fig newtons on a bench that was in the shade of a single large tree. And this dude is there. Lil Eastern Bluebird.
It got pretty hot so I walked back to the building at the trailhead to cool down for a bit, first 90+ F day of the year which is honestly disgusting. It's only march. ANYWAYS, this Tufted Titmouse was in a tree right next to the building just hitting me with all the poses. I have SO many pictures of them that are just wonderful. These are my favs though.
Here is my new species list, I didnt really track EVERY bird I saw, there were just too many, there had to be like 5000 cardinals. I tried to list every species I got eyes on though.
It was an awesome day, gonna go back for a couple of hours tomorrow just to get a small hike in on a rest day off the bike and from training. Will definitely keep looking for the raptors and larger birds are they start to arrive!
