“It’s never a good idea to make a cat angry, I learnt that the hard way. Although, some of them turn on you for no reason.” He frowned, thinking of his friends cat who he’d woken up to find clawing at his legs. “Hey, chill, I was kidding. I’m you ain’t I, pretty girl?” Mitch said, shaking his head a little as he stepped back and dropped the rope onto the ground. Once he was straightened out, he rubbed the knees of his jeans to rid them of some of the mud he’d leaned on. “I don’t have a favorite. What do you suggest?”

“Everyone always says my cat, Pawdrey, is always angry, but I don’t see it. He’s just... well, he can be a little intense if you touch him when he doesn’t wanna be touched, that’s all,” Monica calmly explained, letting out a breath through her nose. “Sorry, I’m very chill and super grateful for your freeing of me, I promise. I wouldn’t be getting you cookies if I wasn’t,” she said with a kind grin as she cleaned herself off. “You don’t have a favorite? ... everyone likes chocolate chip, right? A lot of people don’t like raisin cookies, so maybe that should be your favorite! Supporting the.. lowest one is always nice.”

“Oh, don’t they always. They all seem like nice boys at first, but then you trust them a little and next thing you know you’re tied up uncomfortably while they’re taking advantage of you. Tut tut, you should know better,” Fox teased, smirking at her a bit too smugly and grinning as she leaned forward, only to let out a noise of real offense as she said she wouldn’t get him pizza and pulled away from him. “Oi! You can’t do that!” Jumping up himself, Fox gave her a mischievous look as well. “Well, Monster, I didn’t want to have to say this but… this is war. And all’s fair in pizza and war.” Carefully he moved a bit closer to her, clearly with the intention of playfully chasing her if she tried to run.

“... this is the first time I’ve ever gotten tied down to a tree by boys, Fox. Or did you have a dream about this?” She squinted suspiciously, playfully so, before finally getting freed and revealing her trick. “I can so do it. There are no pizza laws, and I didn’t lie. I’m gonna order lots of pizza, you just can’t have any of it.” he continued stepping back, amusement in her eyes as she started to move a bit quicker, before finally letting out a nervous cry, full of laughter, as she started running away. She should’ve taken her heels off, that much was clear, but it was far too late for that.

“Seriously?” Fox asked, looking all too thrilled by that information and grinning at her at the thought. “You got to watch out for those hoodlums, apparently they start out young here. You never know when they’re going to strike.” Still just smirking at her and laughingly pulling his hand away when she kicked him, Fox pretend to really think about it for a moment, tapping his chin before finally nodding. “All the pizza I want? I guess in that case…” Trailing off he finally stood up to move around the tree and work on untying the ropes, finally dropping them down and moving back in front of her. “What, no kiss for your knight in shining armor?”

“Don’t look at me like that,” Monica whined, ever so dramatic, as she threw her head back, only to collide harshly to the tree trunk, causing a followed his of pain. “They seemed like very nice boys,” she said, a bit more quiet, though she shook off her embarrassment as Fox finally untied her. With a breath of relief, she shook her arms free, the light in her gaze returning as Fox went on to suggest a kiss. “Oh! Sorry,” she said, slowly leaning forward. The second their lips were inches apart, her gaze turned more mischievous. “... I never said I’d buy the pizza for you,” she whispered, before quickly rushing to her feet, laughing as she slowly backed away from him.

Ashton was putting on his jacket, ready to head out at any free moment. He had been at the bar even before it opened to clean up and he was ready to bail the second this conversation died. He didn’t hate the girl or find her annoying to be honest, he just wasn’t seeing the point in having a conversation that he was going to avoid or reject. “Yeah I know, but that means I have to sit there and act like I give a shit about anything being said or done. Too much work, Mon.”

“... what if you do end up caring? You never know! I mean, you have to care about some thing, don’t you?” Ever the optimist, Monica had trouble believing there weren’t things every person had that they liked, or that made them happy. “I mean, really, you’ve gotta have one thing that makes you smile, don’t you?”

Here she was at the bar again, Aya didn’t know why she kept ending up there except that she had a need to do something other than sit around at home knitting like she was already a grandmother. Even still, for how much she wanted company, Aya kept to herself for the most part, almost jumping a little when she heard Monica’s voice. “I… maybe a little,” she admitted with a small laugh, always feeling more comfortable around Monica at least. Her cheeks flushed a little, but she definitely did need a friend and a female one who could help keep guys from hitting on her helped even more. “Thank you… you do too. Look pretty tonight. Not that you… you always do. I don’t really dance though. I’d step all over your feet so I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

“You’re so cute,” Monica said suddenly, smiling at Aya’s blush, barely seen in the dimly lit bar, but Monica was also currently paying very close attention to her. “Aw, thank you. See this outfit? It’s brand new. It’s the only reason I’m here tonight. Have you ever done that? Bought new clothes and did something just to let everyone see it? Or someone special, hopefully,” Monica tacked on, always hopeful to find someone who caught her attention, though she rarely did. Aya was nice, though, and it seemed like she was the sweetest Monica was going to get for the night. “Aw, really? It’s okay! I’m not a very good dancer, either. All you have to do is wiggle your hips and throw your arm around to the beat and suddenly everyone thinks you’re... well, at least kinda good at it.”

Silas was already feeling the tiredness that came along with Monica. She was a good person, he wouldn’t deny that, but she didn’t have anything he particularly wanted to get from her and in situations where he felt he had little to gain, he always found himself wit less patience. “Great to hear… tree incident? Do I even want to know?” Silas doubted that not showing an interest in what she was saying would help his situation much so he might as well ask if he was curious. “.. I don’t know, I wasn’t really planing on it. I don’t really do Halloween unless someone really wants me to go to a party.” He paused. “I really don’t think I’m the person you want to ask about costume advice.”

“Oh, some kids tied me to a tree and stole my gum,” she explained, nodding slowly. “Probably not my best moment, I don’t think. I mean, it’s probably not lower than the fruit guy, but it’s down there,” she explained with a light laugh, shaking her head back and forth. “No? You should go to a party. If you don’t get invited to one, I’ll invite you to mine! I really want you to go, too, so yo might as well start getting prepared!” She grinned in excitement once more, perking up. “Why not? Why wouldn’t I ask you?”

it was a slow day, which meant jyred was spending most of it sitting, sketching absently on spare bits of paper. he had a few designs he was working on, but they were almost done, so he was taking a moment to just scribble mindlessly. the sound of monica’s voice snapped him out of his reverie, and he jerked his arm, messing up the doodle. ❝ shit, ❞ he muttered, studying the botched line before diverting his attention to her. ❝ oh, hey — you — what? did you just say you’re thinking about killing your cat to get a tattoo? ❞ jyred’s brow furrowed, confusion etched on his features. ❝ i mean, as long as it’s a good tattoo, it’s not weird…i guess. but don’t kill your cat to get it. then it would be weird. ❞

“Ah! I’m sorry,” he said, again a bit too loud, as she frowned apologetically. “Hopefully thee cookies can make it up for that? I’m so sorry.” She frowned intensely, not sure what else to do, but that frown turned to shock as he twisted her words. “What? No! No, that’... absolutely not!” Her voice was high and defensive, looking at him in disbelief. “I wanted to know if getting the tattoo would kill my cat because then I totally don’t want the tattoo. I love my cat a lot, I’d never want to hurt him ever, even if he sometime doesn’t feel the same way about me,” she said, all in one breath, and sucking in a sharp one. “I wanted to appreciate him forever by getting a tattoo, that’s all.”

Barely knowing anyone in town had some advantages, or at least Ryan saw it that way. Running through the park, she figured she’d have an uneventful run. That was until she could hear someone calling out over her head phones. Pulling the buds from her ear, she took a moment to look about to find where the voice was coming from. Upon not spotting anyone, she replaced the buds in her ears and began running again. Hearing the voice again, she slowed and pulled the buds from her ears yet again. Whipping around she spotted the blonde currently tied up to the tree. Stepping towards the girl and the tree, Ryan could help but wonder what had happened. “I’ll help you out of this if you tell me why and how you got yourself in this situation?” She asked as she walked behind the tree. 

“Do I have to?” Monica was definitely embarrassed, even if she’d probably make all the same choices again, trusting that a different set of children would be a different outcome. Or even trusting that the kids had learned their lesson - which was highly unlikely. “A group of kids I met said it’d be a funny game. I think they’re the only ones who laughed,” she explained with a small frown. “I didn’t do anything dangerous. I’m not, like, a criminal or something. Promise.”

“Me especially,” Sean said again without hesitation, nodding his head in affirmation. It was always easy to say things like that for him and even more so when it came to Monica since Sean found it hard to believe anyone could find a bad thing to say about her. “… that’s just an expression, Mon, I promise.” He paused as he considered it. “It might be a bit expensive, but it’s probably possible? They put trackers on all kinds of things these days. Pets, phones… you name it.” Her words had him laughing, but it was never meant mean spiritedly and Sean was quickly shaking his head. “Maybe one or two of them are a little proud but mostly? I think they all thought they’d seen the last of me so… I don’t know that they’re thrilled. Maybe if I knew I was going to end up back there I would have been a little less… antagonistic when I was younger.” But probably not. “No one would have, not even me, but life does some crazy things, huh? Alright, I’m trusting you with this. If i have to wear gloves to class, I’ll blame you,” he teased her, with a very light-hearted wag of his finger. “I don’t know… blue? Blue’s nice.”

Monica was completely lit up by Sean’s reassurance. It was always nice for her to have friends that really felt like a friend, that seemed to care about her as equally as she cared. She’d missed Sean for that reason. He’d been one of the few that she could never recall rolling his eyes at her, at any point, or saying anything that hurt her feelings. “Oh!” She giggled a bit, trying to play off her embarrassment for not knowing. “That’s good. I’m glad. You're finally back, I’m hoping you stay for a super long time.” Nodding her head in approval, Monica crinkled her nose as he went on. “Maybe. That notebook does have lots of private stuff in it, but it has a lock, too, so hopefully that keeps the nosy people out!” She nodded quickly, considering the idea for a tracker. She usually lost almost everything, at some point or another. “Surprise! They get to see your pretty face again, so I can’t imagine it being a bad thing for too long,” she aid with a bright grin, bouncing on her toes. “Blue! Okay, got it. I can do blue... maybe some clouds, maybe a little beard!” Her ideas came from under her breath as she moved around the room, sitting across from him. “I’d say you shouldn’t worry about it, but I guess high school kids can be pretty mean sometimes. They’re not ready for grown men wearing pretty nail polish yet, sadly.”

“Hey, you! Person walking roughly northeast down the sidewalk! D’you want some free food? I’m trying to see which restaurant in this town should be where I spend most of my paychecks and I overestimated how much food my stomach can actually hold. I swear it’s not roofied or anything.” 

The directions the girl shouted had only confused Monica, turning her head out of mere curiosity rather than actually realizing she was the one being called out. She peered downwards, squinting at her feet and back up again. “... you’re giving away your food?” Rather than suspicion, Monica’s eyes lit up. “What is it? Not that I’m super picky, but I am a vegetarian, so...” She smiled, bright as ever. “That’s very sweet of you! Have you found any favorites so far?”

Mitch grinned at the smile on the girls face. He’d always loved making people smile, it seemed to be a talent of his. “Oh no, poor cat.” He said, moving to begin untangle the rope around her, sighing when he realized it had been done by kids and the knot was more of a tangle that would take a few minutes to get rid of. “You know, I was considering leaving you here for a few moments longer but you changed my mind at cookies. I’m a sucker for cookies.” Mitch winked, focusing back on the rope and untangling it. Slowly, the ends seemed to come apart and he was up and walking around the girl, slowly unwrapping her.

“I know! He gets very grumpy, too, and even though I think he’s a sweetheart, I know it’s not a good idea to make him angry,” she explained with a nod of her head. “Why? That’s not very nice. I’ve been here for a super long time. It’s felt like days.” Even though, in reality, it had only been a couple of hours. “Everyone only does things for snacks, I’ve noticed,” she grumbled a bit childishly, though she was happily shooting up to her feet when she finally got free. “Thank you! I do owe you cookies for your kindness, then. What are your favorites?”

Seeing her pout really only made Fox even more amused, just grinning at her and feeling all the more smug that there was nothing she could do to stop him. Of course he’d help her in the end, even Fox wasn’t cruel enough to just leave someone out in the lurch… but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t get his own enjoyment from it first. “I think it looks more like you were getting played by some kids… did they steal your lunch money too?” He just chuckled before actually shifting to sit down in front of her, tapping her foot lightly. “Eh, you’re almost getting me there but what’s the magic word? The hair is almost selling it, but we are talking about your freedom here. That’s hungry work.” He just grinned at her, even though knowing she’d likely buy him food anyway, he couldn’t help but want to tease her about it anyway.

There was a long silence as Monica looked down at herself, her gaze falling onto her purse. “... no lunch money. Just all my gum,” she quietly admitted, pouting all the while. She felt herself growing more impatient as he kept stalling, wiggling against the rope once again and huffing pitifully. She gently kicked him after he tapped her foot, gaze narrowed. “I’ll get tons of pizza once you let me go. There, are you happy? Now please quit being a big meanie.”

Lincoln was reading over a very important email he had put off all morning, sipping on his coffee when he heard the yelling of a woman. Looking around it took him a few moments before he realized there was a blonde woman tied to a tree. Yes, tied. Tilting his head he walked towards her and clicked his phone off before sliding it into his jacket pocket. “First, I have to ask, why are you tied here?” 

“Oh, thank you,” she said in relief as someone finally walked towards her, weakly wiggling around against the restraints, eager to be free. There was a certain level of embarrassment that came with his question, redirecting her gaze briefly, before letting out a long breath. “The children seemed very sweet, they just said they wanted to play tug of war, and then when they won and I lost, but it was because I let them! They said it wasn’t fun anymore so they wanted to play other games with the ropes and then... they did this, and then... well, I don’t know where they went.” She frowned, her shoulder sinking dramatically. “I was hoping they’d come back, but I think they’re probably at school, now. Maybe they plan on coming here after,” she reasoned, not wanting to assume the worst of them despite her current situation.

“Hi!” Monica’s voice was far too loud, that much she only realized after she’d spoken, cringing a bit at herself, though said embarrassment only lasted for a few short seconds before moving on. “I actually had, like, a super important question, but before that, I brought...” She lifted a basket, a smile on her lips as she showed him the collection of store bought cookies, offering it out to him. “... I hope you like that kind?” She then took a small step back, glancing around the tattoo shop for a moment. “Oh, and I was wondering if there were any, like, supers... superstitions about getting your pets face tattooed on you? I know the one about the person you’re dating, but I’m hoping there isn’t anything about your cat dying, like, two weeks after you get them tattooed on you or something because I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately, but I don’t wanna... kill him...”

Honestly, Monica didn’t get drunk often at all. She always felt strange letting go of her total control over herself, even if she was strangely more tolerable after too many drinks. On top of that, men were creepy in bars most of the time, but they always seemed drawn to her, so rather than going anywhere near them, the more she drank, the more she gravitated towards Aya, instead. Dancing around, carelessly, she moved closer to the girl, smiling at her once they were close enough to hear each other. “You look a little lost,” she pointed out, still bouncing around on her toes. “Need a friend? You look super pretty tonight, by the way. I mean, you look pretty every time I see you. Do you wanna dance? We should dance!”

The sound of a child crying grated on Rozco’s nerves. The baby sitter for Glitch had called in sick with a cold, forcing him to bring the child to work with him. The blonde sighed, his brother appeared to have the lung capacity of an elephant. “And this is you don’t have any friends, kid.”

Monica had always liked children, probably because she still acted rather similarly to one from time to time, and she had a natural instinct when it came to them. She finally glanced over at the kid, reluctantly inching closer. “Who’s on your shirt?” She gestured towards the child, smiling a bit. “It’s a super cool shirt, I gotta say! I’m totally jealous I don’t have it. Can I borrow it sometime?” For a moment, Monica was unsure if it’d calm the child down, and she was likely taking advantage of the short attention spans that they typically had, specifically because he slowly stopped, face still wet as he looked down to see what was actually on his shirt. Monica’s ears finally felt at peace, so that was something, and she sent the older man a shrug. “I don’t think there’s any special way to make a four year old cry other than talking to them about something else and making them forget why they were super upset in the first place.”

As September made it’s way to October, the cold drew closer and the nights grew darker. Tree’s that were once lively green were now a materializing mix of orange and red, spiraling gracefully to the ground to meet the other discards. Halloween decorations seemed to slowly infest the town which was something Olivia wasn’t use to, usually her parent’s thought Halloween was for worshipping the devil but she has always been curious. 

“Isn’t it a bit early for Halloween decorations?”

With a plastic pumpkin in her hands, it seemed pretty clear that Monica was one of many who got eager and decorated before the month of October even began. She frowned, briefly, before shrugging her shoulders. “It’s like Christmas! It might be a short holiday, but you’re always in the spirit, like, a month ahead because you just wanna enjoy it as much as possible,” she argued, nodding after a moment. “Halloween’s fun, too. So many spooky things!” Even if Monica was a big chicken, she tried not to let that show for the month. “What might be weird is if I was already dressed up in my costume.”
