You have to remember what’s most important in life. I am loved by so many people and have a wonderful job. I know I’m incredibly blessed. I am a completely lucky human being.

If there’s one thing in this life that you want to be remembered for, what is that one thing? Making a positive mark on the world. Whether that be the work that I do with Girl Up or whoever I may work with in the future. Whether that be on the people that I meet and my friends and family, or whether that be through the stories that I tell through the characters, I create through the films, theater shows, and television shows I’m a part of. Hopefully that causes people to think about themselves, humanity, and especially about others.

I’ve never in my entire career thought, “This is what I will do now, and this is what I will do…” because I just don’t think life works like that. I don’t think you can predict anything. So I’m much more of, if I can see it, then I will make a decision about it. Also, my gut is my guide in the sense that if it doesn’t feel right, regardless of whether it makes a lot of sense, then I just can’t do it.

“The criticism was tough. At school I’d always been good at things. And drama was always something I’d been good at. I was picked for good parts in the school plays and you form a sense of yourself from that. And then all of a sudden people are saying: ‘No, you’re shit. You don’t know what you’re doing.’ It’s a strange jolt in how you see yourself and how you connect to the thing that you love.”

Fame didn’t fit well with me. It just didn’t work for me. What’s happened over the years is I’ve had to find ways to come to terms with it and understand it in a new way, and not turn my nose up to it and think that it’s all sort of perverse and distorted. I had to learn not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
