Okay Tumblr, I need some help.

My little stepsister’s bday is coming up and since she reads a lot, I like to get her new (at least, new to her) books that she may not stumble across herself. However, I’ve been thinking of the last time I tried to recommend books to her. I recommended Flowers for Algernon and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and was met with essentially “I don’t read books about retarded people; they freak me out.” (Nevermind that the protagonist of that book wasn’t retarded…) As she was unable to answer any questions on the matter (i.e. why?) I brought the subject up with her mother and was met with the same response.

I believe we as a society can encourage acceptance and understanding through the media, be it tv shows, movies, video games or books, so I would like to gift her a number of novels (ideally with a protagonist that has a disability) that might open her mind up a little bit. If you have any recommendations, I’d really appreciate it!

tl;dr - I’m looking for good books that have a protagonist with a disability. Got any suggestions?
