How Dave Brubeck’s Time Out Changed Jazz

Open Culture has posted Polyphonic’s video tutorial on Dave Brubeck’s Time Out and how it changed jazz. In actuality, Max Roach and others were already working with 5/4 and other odd time signatures. But it was Paul Desmond’s Take Five from the album with a flowing, seductive melody, Brubeck’s memorable piano comping with a 3 and 2 beat division and Joe Morello’s vivid, measured drum solo that brought 5/4 to the jazz masses and beyond. Desmond recorded his own version with a very different quartet on the forthcoming Paul Desmond: The Complete 1975 Toronto Recordings (Mosaic MD7-269), coming in early 2020.

“He was my best friend for eight years.  We were neighbors.  I started biking because of him.  We took a 1000 kilometer trip together: from Italy to Bosnia.  I knew he was suffering from depression.  He told me.  We were sitting by the canal one night in August.  We’d been drinking.  And he just said it, that he felt lost, and he didn’t fit in, and he was very sad.  I knew there was a history of depression in his family.  His father had taken his own life a few years earlier.  But his father had been so much older.  It felt like a different situation.  And it was such a big issue that I didn’t know how to react.  I was uncomfortable.  I didn’t know how to help him.  It felt like too much for me to handle.  So I listened for a few minutes, then I suggested he talk to a professional.  After that I changed the subject.  I know that what happened is ultimately his responsibility.  There’s no way I could have known.  But I should have talked to him more about it.  Maybe he’d have lied.  But I was close enough to ask directly: ‘Do you think you might kill yourself?’” (Paris, France)

“You can do things when you’re six that you can’t do when you’re three like my little sister is.  One thing is ice skate I guess, which I’ve done like maybe two times.  I fell down a lot and it felt kinda frustrating because it’s kinda frustrating when you keep falling but you have to keep your eyes open even if you’re scared.  On the fifth or seventh time around I didn’t even fall and I even did a fancy twirl jump but not in real life just in my imagination.”
