Yeah ok all the Dallas hate has become really weird and disturbing.
Saying he deserved to die, that an underprivileged teenager - child - deserved to be shot by the police. A kid whoās been victimized by the system deserves to be murdered by the same system that victimized him. A kid whoās been the victim of police brutality/law enforcement/the carceral system his whole life deserves to die in an act of police brutality.
Heās not perfect and heās done things that are wrong, but so has every character in the story, and heās a kid, and a lot of his wrongdoings are a direct result of how heās been shaped by the same system that punishes him for said wrongdoings, and his wrongdoings donāt cause damage on a widespread, systemic level the way the Socsā actions do, and he shouldnāt have to be a perfect victim to deserve to not be shot in the street by the cops.
Dallas being a character whoās a criminal and not necessarily ālikableā is part of the point, because it challenges the āperfect victimā narrative thatās a central feature of classism. (And sexism and racism and other forms of discrimination). Marginalized people have to prove that they deserve basic human rights like not being murdered by the police. The default social conditioning is if youāre low class and poor, you deserve whatever punishment doled out by the system, be it jail, homelessness, death, etc, and only if you can prove that youāre some kind of exceptional flawlessly virtuous person can you maybe get people to make an exception for you. And if you commit crimes, forget it - you deserve whatever the cops do to you, including kill you. But only low level street crimes that are often a result of poverty, not white collar crime that causes widespread poverty and suffering, of course.
Iām a big believer in āyour taste in fictional characters is not a reflection of your real life morality,ā but your understanding of a piece of fiction does affect your ability to engage with its themes and your opinions on the characters and plot points. The whole point of the story, of Dallyās character, is that he didnāt deserve to die. At the beginning, Ponyboy/the reader sees Dallas as society does - in a negative light, as a hood - and his unlearning of that is (supposed to be) a vehicle for us unlearning it. At the beginning, Ponyboy says āDallas deserves everything he gets, and should get worse, if you want the truth.ā By the end, Ponyboy learns that he was wrong about that. If you see Dallas the way Pony does at the beginning instead of the end, youāve missed the point.

Ponyboy, talking with a Kermit the Frog puppet in Kermit's voice: I will put MY dish in the dishwasher. Darry, in Cookie Monster voice: THIS IS A SHARED HOUSE!!!
