When Kuroo takes the empty seat across from her at the city library, she sighs loudly and pointedly, and crosses her arms over her chest. He ignores her, and the open notebooks he has in front of her, and opens the book he just checked out. He was going to read it at home, but decides this is better.
A small part of him worries that he's pushing the line, but Kuroo thinks he's accomplished most of what he's accomplished by being persistent and annoying.
"What are you doing here?" she asks, closing the notebook in front of her and sliding it off the table and onto her lap.
Kuroo looks up at her over his book. "Oh, you're not supposed to talk in here."
She rolls her eyes. "Look, I know you think you're being so fucking cute, but I have some shit to get done and I can't get it done if you're here. So can you just like, I dunno, leave?"
"What are you working on?" Kuroo questions, dropping his book. "I'll leave if you tell me," he offers before she can tell him it's none of his business.
A pained expression crosses her face, and it twists up in a way that Kuroo didn't expect. And he must be mistaken, because for a second it looks like she's about to cry. "Something that's really fucking frustrating," she says, quieter than before, and now she really looks like she's about to cry.
Kuroo sits up straighter. "Hey, are you okay? Is it something I can help you with?"
She tightens her hand into a fist and rests her forehead on it. He watches as her shoulders rise and fall with a deep breath. "I dunno. Do you know dick about science?" she asks it bitterly, voice tight.
"Yes," Kuroo replies plainly. "I do. If you need help studying science, I can definitely help you out."
She stays still, for a second. Kuroo watches her carefully for any sort of reaction. When she straightens out, she's cleared out her face of any emotion. "Are you being serious or are you fucking with me?"
"I'm being completely serious," he says, and tries to ignore the sweat that gathers in his palms and how he can't seem to stop his leg from bouncing. "Do you need help with like a college course or something?"
She bites down on the inside of her cheek. "No," she replies uneasily. "I'm studying for the Upper Secondary Equivalency Examination."
Kuroo looks at her. He doesn't say anything. Her face tightens up. "I dropped out of high school, okay?" she snaps. "I need to pass so I can take college courses for music education."
He puts his hands up in defense. "You don't have to explain yourself to me. But I'm more than happy to help you study, if you want help."
"I can't pay you," she blurts out.
"I wasn't expecting you to," Kuroo says, "I want to help you because I like you."
She blinks. "I still don't like you."
Kuroo winces, but still says, "That's fine by me."

The sun leans low against the water, soft and drowsy, painting the sea gold. Hinata drops into the sand near the net, elbows resting on his knees, shirt clinging to the damp of his back. Behind him, faceless laughter and rapid Portuguese. At least now he can make out most of what they’re saying.
He scrubs a hand down his face, lightly rubbing the tips of his fingers on his eyelids, and wills himself to think of something– anything–other than the words from the boy who does not call. For now, he still has this moment.
The waves roll in just a few metres away. Rhythmic, unrelenting, undeterred by the eternal backwash. He watches the swash build and curl, gentle and shallow this close to shore, and remembers a different afternoon— salt air thick in his lungs, pale smoke curling out past her fingers, that cigarette balanced between her lips and a dour expression.
She hadn’t said anything when she offered him one. Hinata had taken it without thinking, even though he’d never smoked before, just because it was from her. He kind of wants one now.
Reminded of her, he pulls out his phone to find no reply from her; just memes from Yamaguchi and thirty new messages in the group chat. He squints against the glare, shrugs to himself, and pockets the phone again. It’s fine. It’s not like he’s fragile. You don’t spend your life reaching for the top of a wall and forget what it looks like when it’s in front if you.
