Rosa Mexicano
Over the weekend I was treated to a gourmet Mexican meal. My parents were in town so we caught an early, pre-Broadway-show dinner at Rosa Mexicano, just north of Columbus Circle. The decor wasn't that of an authentic Mexican restaurant, in fact, it felt more like a fine dining experience, but the food was the genuine, juicy style I'm used to from growing up in California. We got to watch our server make us fresh guacamole, adding the onion, cilantro, tomatoes, etc., according to our preference. We ordered family-style (in honor of family of course) and started with chicken tortilla soup and empenadas. The empenadas were a little too thick and doughy, but the soup was rich and delicious and easily could have served as someone's entree. Next we split chicken tacos, skirt steak, and scallop seviche. The tacos came with creamy refried black beans, cilantro rice, and skillet style chicken with slow-cooked peppers. Our steak was prepared rare and juicy and came with a side of shrimp, and the seviche was spicy yet refreshing. We finished the meal with an order of plantains. Needless to say our meal was delicious, and I will return once I save up some money. Only problem, for me, is that it isn't quite affordable for a recent college grad who shops at TJs.

Tuesday brunch
Tuesday morning I met three friends at Mudspot, a small restaurant in the back of MUD cafe, for an early morning brunch and a warm place to retreat from the rain. We sat in the outdoor conservatory, if you will, which was pretty cool to see and hear the water fall on the glass above us. The atmosphere was festive and trendy: our giant cups of coffee came in camping-style orange tin mugs, we drank water from mason jars, and christmas lights and flags decorated the exposed brick. I ordered a delicious three-egg scramble ($10) with bacon, cheese, and bell pepper, but I also tried the huevos rancheros and breakfast sandwich. Everything came with chunky home fries, and the only problem was how few of them there were. Needless to say we there was no food wasted and As the picture illustrates, we had a great time. Mudspot is a cozy little place to share a simple meal with friends. I will definitely be going back.

Looking for thai food?
We went to this quirky little Thai restaurant last night, Zabb Elee, per a recommendation from the Village Voice blog, and found it more than enjoyable. We split two items, the Kaa Moo Korb, ($9) and the Zabb Noodle Soup ($9), and each enjoyed a glass of modestly priced wine. The pork in the first entree was tough and difficult to eat, but the glaze covering it and spilling on to the rice was delicious. The soup, which was nearly twice the size of the Kaa Moo Korb, was filled with thin brown noodles in a spicy beef broth. Our experience was pleasant, and the service was so fast that we left in under 45 minutes, even though the restaurant was packed on a Monday night with NY locals, ranging from the young date night couple to the group of old friends. In sum, while I will avoid the pork entree, I will certainly revisit Zabb Elee because of the service, the low prices, and the hearty soups.

Painfully relevant to my life right now....
One exceedingly clever application of the new logo for the Philbrook Museum of Art, designed by Michael Bierut of Pentagram. Not only does the mark form a P, it is derived from the museum’s two locations on a grid of Tulsa.
One of the best Daily Show segments I have ever seen...looking forward to his debate against O'Rielly on Oct 6.

Robert Majkut is a talented designer from Poland that seeks inspiration in his dreams. Some time ago he saw a dream where a grand piano appeared that didn’t seem like anything else he had seen before. For weeks he was chasing the picture trapped in his mind, trying to recall the exact shape of the piano. One day his mind unlocked and Whaletone was born. Whaletone is a bespoke piano that looks like a whale emerging from the water and with its sleek curves and excellent sound is ready to conquer us all.
