This picture reminds me of the analogy Gay uses. Showing that everyone needs different things to be equal.

perfect picture for what she was trying to bring out of her story, all there for the same reason, but people who are able need to accommodate (or sacrifice) for those. who are unable like the deaf in her forum thing
So this story that Gay tells is so much more than a story. She says it herself, if is an analogy for life. That one person is not more or less important then another. In this analogy, the view. Even if there is a majority fighting against another. I think it’s really cool how she can look at a person being discriminated in a different way than herself and respect them.
this analogy is kind of sweet considering the fact that she has been discriminated against her whole life and instead of always going with it or being a push over, she stands up for those without a voice like hers.
This is a paragraph taken from a New York Times article titled “Restoring The Traditional Black Family”, it actually explains the separation of black families through the years in an accurate and specific way. I wanted to research what happened to black families throughout the years because in the book asante and his gang was out til the crack of dawn, respecting their mothers, and flipping off their fathers and back then that would never happen. Black families were always seen as a united front with an unbreakable bond, now they’re broken from prison sentences and greed as the article states in numerous parts.
In this passage, asante was talking about visiting his brother in prison before his trial and having to stay strong for his mom and then he takes a look around. It’s not new news that black women are the backbones of black men today, they’re mothers, wives, and daughters are known to being extremely loyal to them. It reminded me of Terry Crews and his sexual assault case because when he said that he was violated by a man nothing by insults and mocking a came his way from a community that should’ve been standing behind him with support. He explained that through it all, black women had his back when he thought they would turn their back on him like the others (black men). I still wonder why that in the book, Asante’s dad felt nothing for his brother and for Terry Crews his fellow brothers felt nothing for him.
Through the previous few chapters of the book, Gay has been explaining the struggles and anxieties of being a fat person in this world. Having the constant stress of having to research ahead of time if there is seating that can accommodate her or if the doorways are too small. In this passage, she explains her experience on an airplane. She was seated next to an old man that she apparently could automatically tell was irritated by her size. After he made a comment, she was forced to hold back her true feelings and just take the criticism. This immediately made me think of a video that went viral a few years ago called “dear fat people” by Nicole Arbor. In her video, she basically be bullies and humiliates fat people for five minutes, but a part of that she talks about an experience she had an airport where she was forced to sit next to a fat person. It really just made me think that there’s always so much more behind the story than you can ever tell.
First of all, the video is horrible but hilarious to watch her incriminate and contradict herself multiple times off a real and sensitive subject. It may be a stretch but I really connect both of our books in multple aspects. Correct me if I’m wrong but I can’t help but connect the discrimination, fear of the word that they say describe fat and black people (fat and the n-word), and the pride that both of the authors gain in the end and through it all to write their books.
from this point on he referred to the well known n-word but didn’t actually say it. i was confused because mf he said every other word on the book, even put the HARD -ER on the word but refused to to properly say the word. maybe it’s because he doesn’t want to say it too much and make people comfortable. no, that’s not it. maybe for respect- no, not that either. it’s a confusing way he writes using connotations for every word through slang and common conversations but why this one word??
In many places like these, i noticed that Asante likes to use either imagery within descriptions or step by steps to pass time in his writing. In the first pic, he’s using the steps of rolling a blunt while talking about black culture in music. In the second, he’s talking about the last moments of spending time with his brother while saying “we’re here now” “and now we’re here” I wonder why he does this instead of just making it all on story time.
In this passage, Gay touches on the idea of the power of words. She talks about how before she knew the word “rape”, she could only describe what happened to her as what it was. Boys forced her to have sex with them. As she got older, she learned this was called rape. She says that word gave her power but it also made her feel damaged and guilty. This reminded me of George Orwell’s politics in the English language, specifically the part of meaningless words. Orwell says, “the person who uses them (words) has his own private definition, but allows his hearer to think he mean something quite different.” To me, Gay’s feelings on the word rape represents this idea. The way the word rape is viewed in society, and how it is interpreted differently by other people (what is or isn’t concidered rape) and what it actually means.
I love how you brought Orwell into this by connecting an easier, more understanding word like rape and seeing how she reacts with this relief of telling her story in an easier way rather than having to go through every minute to describe her experience. I could be wrong but I think later in the book she is going to connect the word fat, rape, and maybe another word that people are afraid of but shouldn’t be to kind of tell her readers to say whatever, do whatever, but be mindful of it.
I scrolled along this Instagram post a few times in the past few months. And after I read the section of the book Hunger that I talked about in my first post, it immediately clicked to me the connection. Roxane Gay talks about how she has been labeled as “morbidly obese”, turning the idea of being fat directly related to death. In this Instagram post, this lady talks about how when people call her fat, she thinks it shouldn’t be a bad thing. That some people are larger then others and that shouldn’t be a bad thing. This idea is pretty much new to me. A lot of us have been taught that fat is bad. And requiring your brain to not think that is an interesting journey.
periodt sis. going into my teen years it was actually my worst fear to be bullied so I refused to gain weight or be myself because certain labels can be so hurtful and be a big part of your later years. Overtime you just overcome that and start giving zero F***S and woman like Gay or the woman in this post telling you that labels dont actually matter at the end of the day and to take over YOUR life and bring YOURSELF happiness is one of the greatest messages you can ever give.
In this passage, Gay talks about the idea of being a marked woman, very similar to Deborah Tanner. However, she comes to a very different conclusion. Gay feels she is marked, however she is more talking about her marking herself with identities or labels. It is less about what other people think of her situation, because at this point no one else knew. However, she feels there is an importance to labels and accepting yours. She wants to accept her label as survivor and as victim. She doesn’t say exactly why, but I would guess that it’s a sense of closure. To be okay with what happened. All throughout my life, many influential adults have had differing opinions on labels and the impact they have. I have heard a lot that accepting a label can hurt you. However, Gay’s perspective if accepting a label giving you peace is also very interesting.
I love how she just took on two labels that contradict each other in a way since a survivor is usually someone who’s live and thriving and the stereotypical victim is just in the state of depression with PTSD or something idk. And I think she took both because she understands her struggle and still lives with it but now she’s living and taking from her experiences turning this to a lesson for her readers.
The second I read this paragraph, it was so clear to me that this was an example of language corrupting thought. Gay uses the word obese as an example. Although it’s literal meaning is a fair explanation, the way society uses that word is completely messed up. The meaning it has now, is not what I is supposed to be. Yes, people with a high amount of body fat are obese. But, Gay explains how the word “obese” is viewed as horrifying, unpleasant, and deathly by doctors and the world. Obese is just another physical describing adjective such as tall, short, brunette or blonde. Why dosent society treat the words fat or obese just as those? A descriptor that is just true, but not bad?
I totally agree with how disgusting society treats obese people and treat the word as an insult these days due to.. you guessed it, corruption. Even though I don’t like the label when used to hurt people, is there really a way to describe people with a bit of fat without hurting them or making them feel uncomfortable? Any label or adjective can really scar your ego if you let it.
For my research project book, I chose Hunger by Roxane Gay. I’ve recently been very into the idea of the body positive community and going against diet culture. So, I started my search by looking up books about self love, specifically written by women. I thought I might connect more to a female author. Scrolling through amazon, I came across Hunger. I remembered Mr. Kreinbeing saying something about Roxane Gay and him liking another one of her books so I just picked it and hoped for the best :)
I LOVE the idea of it all from speaking on body positivity to the author being a woman. I can’t wait to see how empowering and thought-provoking you percieve this book to be.
This book was actually introduced to me by Mr. Kreinbring as he thought it would be a good read for me considering my struggle with finding one that interests me. he. was. right. The story of MK Asante through his struggles and upliftings is something so inspiring and is why i decided to stick with it. For a man who is portrayed in this world to not succeed he sure did quite the contrary.

When the topic of corruption came up and we had to pick an article that had to be based solely off a person’s opinions therefore making the idea of an argument easily to contradict i decided to annotate a type of theme that technically is already corrupt it’s self and I immediately came to fashion as an easy source. Through this article written by a college student who talked about 11 reasons why fashion sucks is so.. self-contradicting and flip flops because it sounded like she couldn’t make up her mind on what she liked. Before the starred passage, she expressed how denim was disgusting.. but she loved the vests and skirts, and then said how uggs are so convenient and comfortable while calling hem out, basically anything she “didnt like” was something she wore on a daily basis.
I chose to look closely to the 5th point she made and treated it important because she makes my argument for me. First of all, fashion is something ONLY based off style and preference.. ONLY. There are no rules to it, you can mix or match because it doesn’t matter and the way this article is built are putting rules to fashion and making it something so exclusive because she doesn’t like polka dots. What really confused me is that before and after #5 she expressed something clothing items that she thought were acceptable and then called eras like the 70s or 90s tacky and unflattering when the fashion we wear is so innovative because we take those things back and make them are own. Denim didn’t pop up last year, you wear top knots to the grocery store every now and then, and i get that you may not realize that it’s your style but YOU DO IT. This whole article is sooo confusing and corrupt only because it’s all her opinion and preferences, saying one thing and then the opposite after, and calling something that is corrupt within itself (the fashion industry) and calling it sucky. TUH
Ninja Sex Party
For my underrated piece of art, I choose the band Ninja Sex Party, a band that is truly one of the best out there but they’re not known enough. Ninja Sex Party consits of two members, singer and songwriter Dan Avidan (or Danny Sexbang, his stage name), and Keyboard player Brian Wecht (or Ninja Brian). They make a variety of songs, some of which are cover songs that cover a mix of 70’s and 80’s music, some are original songs that hold near and dear to their hearts, others are just full on comedy songs about almost anything you could imagine (for example, there’s a song called “Dinosaur Laser Fight” and yes, you read that right), and a lot of times a band called TWRP (who is also very unappreciated) also appear on a lot of Ninja Sex Party songs, contributing the gutair, bass, keytar, and drums that you hear in some of their songs. A lot of artists these days stick to one sound and theme and make all of their songs sound very similar but Ninja Sex Party make such a wide variety of music that help a big amount of people like at least one of their songs.
I love what Ninja Sex Party is doing with their creativity and musical talent from what you’ve desecribed so far and I’ve concluded that their uniqueness and their overall weirdness is why they are, in your eyes, under appreciated. Personally, I wouldn’t have listened to them and probably won’t again unless it’s on Tumblr so for the big fan base they have in this music industry today tells me that the cover/electro band named “Ninja Sex Party” is at the rating they deserve.
When we pick up a newspaper, which i’m guessing no one even does anymore, you get bored and uninterested. Now when you pick up something like a magazine or a newsletter you’re immediately drawn and want to actually read it. Because of the ViSuAlS!!! I don’t think we actually take in and appreciate what we these editors and graphic designers do for our corneas so the next time you even look at a magazine I want you to see what I see...

surprise!! colors actually mean something and when certain colors are applied... certain emotions, ideas, thoughts even are extracted out of us to reel us into the story.

the template really makes or breaks it, you don’t see magazines for their 12pt font and MLA format you see them for their BOLD letters and sectioned off boxes with pics here and quotes there.
the pictures
r e p r e s e n t a t i o n is 🔑!!! when you are reading about a competition, you want to see the team, and when you hear about a loose murder then i’m pretty sure you want to see his/her picture. pictures tie everything together and even makes someone want to read it more to see what the picture is about.
