1st Look Magazine Vol. 131- WORK OUT HANG OUT
Oh hey it’s back on my dash perfect! I was just thinking of this the other day!
OHOHOHO wow the Korean alphabet is awesome. The people who designed it were geniuses and were obviously incredibly schooled in the morphology and phonology of their language. HNNGGG
FUN FACT!
IT WASN’T JUST ANY OLD DUDE WHO DECIDED, “HEY I WANT TO CREATE A KOREAN ALPHABET.”
IT WAS KING SEJONG, WHO ORDERED HIS ROYAL SCHOLARS TO CREATE THIS ALPHABET SO READING AND WRITING COULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE, EVEN THE PEASANTS. IT WAS PURPOSELY DESIGNED TO BE EASY TO LEARN.
SO SHOUT OUT TO KING SEJONG, WHO REALIZED BEFORE MANY OTHERS THE IMPORTANCE OF UNIVERSAL LITERACY.
YOU GO KING SEJONG, FOUR FOR YOU KING SEJONG
this took me longer than 15 minutes but what a good way to learn korean!
I LOVE SINGING THIS SONG!!!!!!

in case y’all weren’t aware
Cultural warning: the following post and links depict names and images of persons deceased.
a 17 year old child was hooded and strapped to mechanical restraint chair in Northern Territory detention
there is legitimate torture (tear gassing!!) of indigenous children held in Don Dale detention centre
a boy was being forcefully stripped naked, held in a hog tie position, carried by the neck and thrown across a room
Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion says he was not aware of allegations of abuse within the Northern Territory juvenile detention system, because it had not “piqued his interest”.

protect your aboriginal brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and children!
white australia has been ignoring stories like this for years.
in January this year John Lawrence, (at the centre of the latest allegations) was talking specifically about the gassing incident depicted on Four Corners last night. And yet, it took video of the incident for anyone to actually care.
I wrote a post about this back in april, and have added to it since.
“The first is what we saw on Four Corners overnight is how authorities behave when they know they’re being recorded. Can you imagine how they behave when they think they’re not? Here’s how: Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley beat Mulrunji Doomadgee to death on the floor of the Palm Island watchhouse in 2004. Even so, shortly after Mulrunji lay dying, writhing in agony on the floor of his cell, video recorded a Palm Island police officer kicking him to see if he was awake. He was dead. The same video recorded Hurley a few minutes later sliding against the wall to the floor, with his head in his hands, after realizing what he’d done. And yet, Hurley was acquitted by a jury for the killing. We didn’t have video of the actual flogging, so Hurley went on to a long and more prosperous career in the Queensland Police, until non Aboriginal people starting becoming his victims (he fired his gun at a car during a police chase, and then threatened a female colleague in a separate incident).” (x)
Why can’t y’all just believe us Aboriginal people, when we tell stories of the brutal violence perpetrated against us by people in authority?
If a blackfulla tells a story of systemic abuse, y’all demand more evidence. Photo evidence. Video evidence. Several corroborated witness testimonies…and yet y’all still the silent about it?
What everybody saw on 4 corners last night will happen again. It will happen tomorrow and the day after and the day after that. And it will happen across any part of the Aboriginal life experience you choose to focus on.
so, to my white followers: please don’t ignore us.
to my aboriginal brothers and sisters: stay safe.
ya Allah they want us to burn … my heart is always in the NT.

Liu Wen by Jin Jia Ji for Grazia China June 2016
ok last post im gonna make abt this cuz a lot of ppl r confused whats going on and its summer so i have time 2 mess around on tumblr.
basically, this started when an international tribunal (fancy word 4 court) ruled that chinas claims to the south china sea had no legal basis and were invalid. this case was filed by the philippines back in 2013 bc china was doing all kinds of stuff in the sea bc they claimed the territory was their own. u can read more about it here.
anyways, this sparked a wave of rly intense chinese nationalism which ofc started on weibo and began the hashtag #中国一点都不能少 (left pic) which roughly translates to “china, not a single bit can be left out” and its been circulating w/ this image of a map of china that has a line drawn around the south china sea, along w/ taiwan in the picture.
almost every mainland chinese celebrity has been posting this hashtag as well (everybody….angelababy, fan bingbing, huang xiaoming, lu han, zitao, yixing, victoria, lin yun, yang mi, etc etc etc) and its also led to really really REALLY gross comments about vietnamese and philippinx people specifically, from mainland china on social media.
so thats what the situation is and u should hold ur favs accountable for posting this bc the harm its done to southeast asian ppl in particular is disgusting and shameful. esp celebs like victoria who have posted it on instagram, which is blocked in china and how she communicates w/ her non-chinese fans. shes getting praised for it on weibo (right pic).
its also important to remember that chinese celebrities do not hold the same agency and public clout that us celebrities do, and they basically cant speak out against mainstream opinions even if they hold different views themselves. so keep that in mind too, bc its very easy to view this from an ethnocentric pov, me included. ok thats it thats the deal. we need to talk about chinese imperialism is the main point
for ppl who are wondering about the political situation between china and southeastern countries rn!
this is mostly being brought to light due to how visible idols are, specifically kpop idols who are ethnically chinese. as public figures it’s good to be critical of a celebrity’s actions but please don’t let it overtake the focus of the discussion. there are extremely racist images and comments that are being circulated that target vietnamese and filipinx people. the mistreatment of se asians should not be only discussed in conjunction with what an idol may/may not be supporting, bc it feels like we are being talked over when we are the ones being relentlessly attacked
as iris (the OP) and i have talked about in our PMs, historically there has been an imbalance of visibility and political power in favor of east asian countries over se asian countries. having the south sea issue derailed to conversations about calling out idols and seeing who will fck up next for expressing nationalist support feeds into se asians being overlooked
Actual Southeast Asian (Filipinx) here. I am aware that there’s a lot of heat being directed at Vietnamese people and my own people, but since I’m in the Philippines, I don’t read Chinese, and I’m not particularly immersed in East Asian celebrity culture, I’m fairly insulated from the hate (from the little I’ve heard, it’s pretty horrible and disturbing). I’m glad you guys are acknowledging that it’s a messed up situation. And I really appreciate your pointing out that there is a tendency for Southeast Asians to get talked over and ignored. This kind of ethnic conflict scares me, honestly. It’s so easy for things to spiral out of control. Our embassy in China has already issued warnings for Philippine nationals in that country to watch out for hate crimes and possible violence. I haven’t heard that much vitriol directed towards local migrant Chinese and Tsinoy populations here in the Philippines (I’ve been repeatedly mistaken for Han Chinese, despite my dark skin, and nobody has given me grief about it so far), but the new presidential administration’s all-out “war on crime” has caused a spike in vigilante “justice” and extrajudicial killings, and thus far, it hasn’t exactly been big on non-violent solutions. Or non-violent anything, really. Even with all this tension though, I doubt that all-out international armed conflict is in the cards. I sincerely hope it isn’t, and I truly believe it’s unlikely. But here, on local shores, with all the fanatical craziness going around, prejudices and bitterness could so easily boil over into actual bloodshed and ethnic hate. It scares me. Actually acknowledging it and how problematic some “nationalistic” responses to the South Sea Arbitration are, especially on a pan-Asian platform like @reclaimingasia is a step towards peaceful discourse, and a small way to prevent possible real world violence. So thank you.

also wanted to add that while many east / southeast asian countries have been victims of chinese imperialism, historically and in modern times they have been treated differently (japan and korea have always been viewed as having a “higher status” than their southeast asian counterparts) and regarding this case specifically, the conversation should be centered around southeast asian voices. i understand that bringing up chinese imperialism as a general topic invites discussion from all different ethnicities / perspectives, but for the current situation it’s important that we focus on southeast asian (particularly philippinx, vietnamese, malaysian, and bruneian) points of view.
