Hungry sea otter pup ahead!

The first order of business once pup 696 is safely settled at the Aquarium is building up his weight and strength. Adult sea otters eat 25-30% of their body weight per day, so staff and volunteers feed him for several hours every day! It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it!  

Pup 696′s journey from bottle to beach follows in the webbed footsteps of many a hungry otter. Over the past 30 years, over 700 sea otters—adults and pups—have come through the Aquarium’s Sea Otter Program.

A raft of otters in the wild. Notice the ones with tags on their flippers? Those are otters that were rescued through our Sea Otter Program!

But pup 696 isn’t quite ready for the wild. He’s got a lot to learn including how to stay fluffy and warm! Stay tuned for more on that tomorrow.
